Yeah, I followed a path similar to yours. I am a big fan of VLV and MX (the "midplay" era, ahah) and when I discovered that Coldplay mentioned several times AF as an influence during that period, I st

Agreed. I still think it's a very average album. and as Reilly said, if this was their first album, no one would care.

are you kidding me ? we are not talking about viva la vida.

i'd go as far as to say it was poor

last track is all there is that's above average. they haven't actually done anything with this album.

what do you expect from the arcade fire ? a techno album ? or an acid/house album ?

coldplay haven't done anything new in their first 3 records, and the 4th album is kinda boring.

Yet I heard everywhere it would be "sooo awesome" so I listened to it... the German magazine Musikexpress even said "Arcade Fire give us the first big Indie album of this decade" which I don't really understand now after listening.

This is the only album of the guys I listened to btw. (another )

hahaha I haven't bought that magazine since some years, but when I saw they had Arcade Fire on the title I thought of giving it a chance again. after reading it I lost my faith in music magazines at least in this one. The article was shit. They way they were talking about Neon Bible and the way they were talking about the new album on the other hand---made me rather angry....angry might be the wrong expression, but I couldn't disagree more with what they wrote

not surprised with this reaction.

i guess thats often the problem with "concept" albums. the band focuses heavily on creating a certain sound or vibe over the whole album and in doing so fail to create a focal point or true highlight on the album. therefore it fails to leave a strong impression or impact on the listener. on top of that, they've chosen a rather dire, bleak theme for the album, that being the suburbs and even though i think they've conveyed that concept to perfection over 63mins it was a poor choice of theme especially for a band as grandiose as arcade fire.

in regards to nobody really caring if this was their debut. i agree but how many bands do we know made a concept album for their debut? its what you do when you have an established fan base and critics madly in love with you.

to be honest the album did fall short of my expectations ( i was expecting something to match ok computer :laugh3:) i still think the album is excellent from beginning to end.

there are so many highlights in this record....

ready to start, for example,is one of their best songs ever.

^^

yeah you're right but when you pit it up against songs like wake up, neighbourhood #2, intervention, no cars go and the like. it's not quite as impressive. at least, from the point of view of a lot of the dissenters, it's not as good.

since I own their new album I listen to them every day. To everything else they have released, but not to the new album

It's always a matter of personal tastes....but to me,the best songs on this new album are on the same level of the best of the previous two records.

Ready To Star,Modern Man,City With No Children In It, Half Light II,Suburban War,We Used To Wait,Sprawl II...

since I own their new album I listen to them every day. To everything else they have released, but not to the new album

WOW

i don't expect something vastly different. but when it's a watered down version of the stuff they have already done what's the point? if it was as good as their first two on merit of songs then i had no trouble with them keeping the same style, but it seems like they've taken any negative aspects of their sound which is usually in the backdrop and adds nicely to the song, and pushed those forwards.

and yes, i can see arcade fire carrying on watering down and never changing so i will lose interest if they do

i would like to hear a techno album from them actually. it isn't implausible.

and i don't really like coldplay so bring that up as a defence doesn't work too well since i agree with you.

it's not a watered down version of the stuff they've already done, this is their "style" and i think with this new album they have developed their sound....honestly i can't find something wrong with this new record.

can you talk about the negative aspects of their sound and where i can find those aspects in the new album ?

it is the over instrumentation that worked well in previous albums as it was backed up by good songwriting and provided a nice lush backdrop. now they don't seem to have the good songwriting and are instead pushing forward the tiny details that gave the old songs a fullness and just use that as the main drive. when you listen to it they aren't actually doing anything. it's just a sound of the same notes being repeated over and over with a few effects added. like what u2 do except this is less poppy.

as somebody else mentioned a few pages back, anybody could have written this album. it's what happens to a lot of people when they don't have too many ideas and are expected to release an album. the last track gives me hope that they can evolve in the future rather than continuing to devolve.

i've listened to it about 4 times now and still can't remember any of the songs except the last one. it all just blurs into about 6 musical notes.

incidentally i'm happy for you that you like it

i only wish i did

but i can't force these things and i won't lie to myself and stand by them based on previous work if this album isn't up to scratch. as far as i am concerned until the release something good (and i will listen to future releases to see if they have returned to form) they are a dead band when it comes to studio albums. live on the other hand is a different matter until i've heard some of the new album live. right now though i have no interest in hearing it in any way shape or form.

Sorry for randomly just bursting in here and talking about me. :embarrassed:

BUT They were beyond amazing last night! It was really the perfect show to wrap up Lollapalooza with. I sadly have nothing to share with you guys since my camera broke the last day of the festival

this one Finnish music magazine actually said something like "This is Arcade Fire's "Ok Computer" " haha

i read that somewhere too!

can't remember where.

ohh then it might have been Q magazine too? I might be getting them mixed :P yeah I think it was actually Q

yes, possibly!

what do you make of the new album?

well I just posted a few pages ago so sorry for repeating but I really love it, I wasn't sure of some of the new songs when they first gave them out but after seeing the songs live I already liked them more and after hearing them in the album EVEN more haha but yeah I love the general feeling of the album and how it flows through so nicely and yes it has some absolutely brilliant songs. so yeah I absolutely adore it and can't stop listening to it :P

sweet! i'm glad to hear it

i wish i felt that way about it :shame:

maybe it'll come with time  I tried to listen to it without that many expectations and with an open mind, without comparing it to their old stuff. I'm just glad that they atleast tried something different and not repeat themselves too much, hopefully they'll do something that you like more too the next time around then

yeah, that's what i'm hoping

the last track gives me hope

By the last track you mean The Suburbs (continued) or Sprawl II?

The Suburbs (continued)

if the whole album had been in that style i'm fairly sure i'd be in love with it. unfortunately the rest are closer to The Suburbs (1st track version) which does nothing to me.

to be fair though i don't know if it would still be able to pull it off if it was all in that style because it just doesn't have the song writing skills other than that.

YOU SUCKS SO MUCH ASS

Is this the brunt of dealing with the fangirls?

Well technically whatever ever a band does it's in "their" style, because they're performing it. The style might not be consistent, but it's still theirs.

By that idea, technically a wedding cover band still have their own style, because even if they try to play a song exactly like the original acts, they'll always sound slightly different. Argument- null.

Arcade Fire - We Used To Wait Single Review

This track is like paint drying.

Seriously, not a single interesting thing happens in the five minutes this track rudely steals from you. A piano plinks drearily away in the background while an insipid voice quietly coo along, the whole track sounding afraid of ever doing anything lest it scare anyone - even when it does "get going" (And I use that term loosely), it still sounds like music they play in trendy clothes shops to try and cushion the blow that a cardigan and a pair of inconveniently cut jeans are going to cost you £150, and to be completely frank listening to it any more keenly than that is giving it far more attention than it deserves. Of course, people in cardigans and inconveniently cut jeans will likely praise this track (and the record it comes from) to heaven and back, but I'm afraid I simply can't agree with anyone who has anything positive to say about this other than "Well, at least it isn't Coldplay". :o

I chucked the CD into my player on receiving it knowing nothing about Arcade Fire, but thinking "Hey, people are always banging on about Arcade Fire, and I'm pretty sure they've won some awards and that. This MUST be good".

Nope. Instead you just get a drab waste of five minutes.

There's so little to say about this track. It just doesn't do anything, go anywhere, spark any interest, or anything else. It's the musical equivalent of beige; uninteresting and impossible to care about or have an opinion on. Do yourself a favour and listen to something a little more worthwhile: The new Gallops EP, for example, or maybe something from Three One G records' back catalogue - Just don't waste your time on this single.
