tone is a whole different thing...

la diferencia de notas entre 1 traste (o fret) y otro es siempre de 1/2 paso (o step).

 

Te daré un ejemplo, siendo lo mas claro posible pues no se cuanto sabes de musica y de la guitarra. Vamnos a dar por sentado que tenemos la guitarra con la afinación estandar EADGBe (Mi La Re Sol Si Mi).

 

 

la 3era cuerda tocada al aire (sin ningun dedo sobre el mastil), equivale a la nota Sol (G). Si presionas sobre el primer traste de esa cuerda y la tocas, la nota será un sol sostenido (G# o G sharp).

 

Como ves, ha subido solamente medio paso o step.

I consider sharps and flats "notes" so since Jonny normally plays the riff starting on the 12th fret, in this acoustic version, he starts on the 10th fret.

Question about warning sign; when I play this on my electric guitar (and also on my acoustic) the 3rd string from under (G) just dominates the tune, going louder while I play the verse. Is this normal or do I have to use a special technique I don't know about?

It's either the guitar, or the way you're strumming it. Maybe try strumming at different angles to make the strings sound evenly.
