Lovely Gwyneth interview:

GWYNETH PALTROW EXCLUSIVE: APPLE'S TURNED MY LIFE AROUND

EXCLUSIVE

By John Hiscock

ONCE one of Hollywood's busiest stars, it seemed as if Gwyneth Paltrow just couldn't turn down a film role.

Between 1995 and 2004 she made 21 movies. But that frantic work rate almost destroyed her. So now she is putting her personal life first.

"When you reach the pinnacle of your success at 26, as I did, it's not healthy," says Gwyneth, who is 33 today. "It leaves you in a sort of crisis in terms of what you're supposed to be and do for the rest of your life.

"I made the mistake of working too much and it turned out to be really the wrong thing. I just had a lot of life in 10 years. I worked so much for so long. I achieved a lot early, but I wasn't very happy. At this point in my life, I have a real life."

By "real life" she means her time spent with her husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin, and their 16-month-old daughter, Apple.

"Having Apple has changed everything for me," says Gwyneth. "It's changed the way I see the world - I feel like it's even changed my DNA. She's such a good girl and so reasonable. I've never ever raised my voice or lost my patience with her once.

"I feel very lucky and I understand the value of life better. I love my family and I feel very content."

For a long time, LA-born Gwyneth had been looking for the sort of relationship she witnessed between her parents - film director Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner.

But while her film career took off - with small parts in Hook, Malice and Se7en leading to the title role in a 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma - her love life failed to keep pace.

By 1999 she was Hollywood's hottest property, winning an Oscar for Shakespeare In Love and going on to make The Talented Mr Ripley, Sylvia and Shallow Hal, among other movies. But off screen, things were less rosy. Her engagement to her Se7en co-star Brad Pitt in 1996 lasted six months. After that she was romantically linked to actors Ben Affleck, Robert Sean Leonard and Luke Wilson - none of which came to anything.

Gwyneth has rarely spoken about the men in her life, except to say of Pitt: "It really changed my life. When we split up, something changed, permanently, in me. My heart sort of broke that day, and it will never be the same."

But then she met 28-year-old Chris Martin, backstage at a Coldplay gig in 2002. The following year she was pregnant and they eloped in December 2003.

W ITH no family or friends present, she and Chris were married by a judge in a hotel in Santa Barbara, California. Afterwards they flew to Mexico for a brief honeymoon.

Ever since, they have remained fiercely protective of their private life. They do not appear together at public events and they do not like to be photographed as a couple.

And although Gwyneth often goes on tour with Coldplay - she and baby Apple also saw the band play at Live 8 - she keeps a low profile.

"It's his tour and it's his work and it's not about me," she explains. "So I just kind of sneak in, watch and clap and scream, and then go backstage afterwards."

Likewise, Chris is nowhere to be seen as Gwyneth goes about her work today at the Toronto Film Festival, where she is promoting her latest movie, Proof. She also appeared in the stage version in London's West End in 2002.

The film, which co-stars Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal, is about a woman who fears she has inherited a mental illness from her father, a maths genius. By tragic coincidence, Gwyneth's 58-year-old father Bruce, who she idolised, died from throat cancer in 2002, shortly before filming began.

Gwyneth says: "I came to the role in Proof with a very full experience of a father-daughter relationship, which was the most central relationship of my life until I was 30 years old.

"When I was doing the play, my father was still alive, so I was exploring the relationship from a different angle.

"When I did the film, he had died so it was very hard. There were certain scenes that were really tough for me to do."

Fortunately, Gwyneth now has another form of love and support in the shape of her in-laws, who live in Somerset. Chris's dad is an accountant and a magistrate, and his mum, a teacher, was born and raised in Zimbabwe.

"You hear terrible stories about mothers-in-law but mine is so fantastic and loving," she smiles.

"I also have four sibling in-laws who are all incredibly different from each other and incredibly interesting and wonderful.

"Lots of things come up that are different, though. There are times when I have to say, 'Oh, gosh. I didn't mean that'. Once I was describing something someone had in their fanny pack, but in England you don't call it a fanny pack - for a good reason.

"And when my in-laws come over to America I have to translate for them and explain what certain words mean. It's very funny. It would make a good sitcom.

"But at the heart of it all is a close family, and it doesn't really matter what country you are in once you get past the cultural differences."

Gwyneth and Chris have a home in New York and are often in LA visiting her 62-year-old mother, Blythe. They also own a place in London, and recently moved from Knightsbridge to Belsize Park.

"It's great exploring a new area and it's less posh and more real, which my husband really appreciates," says Gwyneth. "A lot of our friends live there, too, so I'm seeing a whole other side to London that I didn't know."

She also finds life in London more practical than the States - especially being the mother of a young child.

"I love the fact that you can hail a taxi and just pick up the pram and put it in the back without collapsing it," she says. "And I love the London parks and Regent's Park Zoo, the Tate Modern and the places we go for dinner. It's a pretty great city.

Having bases either side of the Atlantic has certainly not harmed her career. And although Gwyneth is cutting down on her workload, she is not about to turn her back on acting. She plays singer Peggy Lee in a film about author Truman Capote, has a cameo in the British comedy Love And Other Disasters, and is considering the part of movie legend Marlene Dietrich in a biopic.

B UT despite still being very much in demand, Apple is now her main priority.

"She's so clever and very, very funny," smiles Gwyneth. "She is talking a lot now. She says a lot of words in Spanish, which is cute.

"When she's older, I'll send her to Spain so she learns to speak Spanish fluently. I look at my friends' children in Europe and everybody speaks multiple languages. It's such a gift to go to a country and converse with people in their native tongue. It opens doors for you, so I hope she'll learn a lot of languages."

"She's a very centred, happy little girl. She's lovely and I feel so lucky to have her. It's a good time in my life. It's like I won the Lottery. I feel very blessed."

Thanks so much for that great article! I'm just completely fascinated by her, mainly because I'm a 30 year old stay-at-home mom of two small boys, 4 and 2, and I can totally relate to her. She is one lucky gal!

BTW, Happy Birthday Gwyneth, whether it was yesterday or today!

PALTROW AND MARTIN STRUGGLE WITH LANGUAGE BARRIER

GWYNETH PALTROW is convinced her home life with COLDPLAY frontman CHRIS MARTIN would make brilliant sitcom, because they often get hilariously confused by the different connotations of American and British words.

The SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE actress married Martin two years ago (03) but admits the culture difference still creates problems - especially when family members come to stay.

She says, "Lots of things come up that are different. There are times when I say, 'Oh gosh. I didn't mean that.'

"Once I was describing something someone had in their fanny pack, but in England you don't call it a fanny pack - for a good reason."

She adds, "When my in-laws come over to America I have to translate for them and explain what certain words mean. It's very funny. It would make a good sitcom."

I totally understand that they don't want to be photographed as a couple in their private lives! but why not going to an event together?

GWYNETH'S LONDON INSIDER TIPS FOR YOU

1. EXPECT DIFFERENCES - AND ENJOY THEM!

The mistake I made was thinking that because the U.S. and the U.K. share the same language, everything would be the same. It's really not the same! England is a foreign country, with a very foreign culture and foreign sense of humor. At first I found it kind of cold and depressing, but over the years, I've really fallen in love with it. When I'm in London, I go to the theater, I go to museums, I see friends. It's a really nice place to live.

2. MELLOW OUT.

In America, everything is so clean. My husband (Coldplay's Chris Martin, a Brit) thinks I'm way too obsessed with cleanliness and germs. I'm just like, "The street is filthy, could we take off our shoes before we come in the house?" He likes to imitate me and say, "Ewww, oh my God!" Also, customer service is just rubbish in England. People are much more relaxed there, and things take forever to get done. They'll tell you it'll take two weeks for your Internet service to be fixed! It drives me nuts. And I miss being able to get anything at any time of the day. You can't do that there.

3. DO AS LONDONERS DO.

I personally think that Americans should try to blend in slightly - especially because we don't seem to be everybody's favorite nationality at the moment. Americans often wear white sneakers with shorts and baseball hats when they're abroad - why?

4. LEARN TO SPEAK REAL ENGLISH.

It's very funny - there are words that just don't overlap at all. Brits say "rubbish bin"; we say "trash can." I'm always having to change my vocabulary depending on what country I'm in. Apple's 17 months old now, and she's talking so much. On certain words she sounds English, and she's got a Cockney accent when she says hello for some reason; she says, "Allo!" I'm like, "No one you know talks like that!"

5. DON'T FORGET YOUR GALOSHES.

Bring a raincoat, definitely! Or at least a little umbrella that can fit in your bag, because it does always rain. The best thing for London, even if you're going in summer, is to bring a little cashmere sweater or a pashmina, because it gets really cold unexpectedly.

6. BRING A LITTLE BIT OF HOME WITH YOU.

Reading The New York [/i]Times gives me a little hit of home. Especially on Sundays, when Apple takes her nap. I get a cup of tea, and I read it online. And I have an old perfume bottle of my mother's. It's this Balenciaga fragrance that's discontinued, and it's got, like, one drop left in it. I smell it, and it reminds me of her.

I can understand it. Then photographers would want to take pictures of them, and they're not the type of couple that poses, and it could be misunderstood. Photographers often spread rumors about Hollywood couples and how arrogant they are for not posing, but once you do is like you're sending a message: That you don't mind pimping out your marriage and paparazzi and photographers are welcome. And that's exactly what they're trying to avoid.
