Gwyneth Paltrow: People I respect and admire have had affairs. We’re flawed. We’re human

By GRANT ROLLINGS

AFTER nearly eight years of marriage to Coldplay singer Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow has one of the strongest relationships in showbusiness. But the actress has a surprisingly relaxed view of fellow stars who stray from the path of faithfulness.

In a revealing interview the 38-year-old American screen beauty says: "I am a great romantic — but I also think you can be a romantic and a realist. "Life is complicated and long and I know people that I respect and admire and look up to who have had extra-marital affairs.

"It's like we're flawed — we're human beings and sometimes you make choices that other people are going to judge.

Husband ... Coldplay's Chris Martin

"That's their problem but I really think that the more I live my life the more I learn not to judge people for what they do. I think we're all trying our best but life is complicated." In her new film Contagion, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, Gwyneth plays an adulterous wife who unwittingly brings back a deadly virus to America after a visit to Hong Kong.

At the film's Press conference she joked: "If death by virus was a punishment for extra-marital affairs there would only be three dudes left in this world right now." But while she may think affairs are part of life she is quick to stress she is happy with British husband Chris and their children Apple, seven, and five-year-old Moses.

She says: "I'm lucky — I have a wonderful, blessed life. I have two fantastically delightful children and a very nice husband, so... " Then she adds, laughing: "Knock on wood."

Mother ... Gwyneth Paltrow

One rule that 34-year-old Chris has laid down is that Gwyneth should not play his band's music at home — including fifth album Mylo Xyloto, released next month — but she says: "I listen to Coldplay around the house when my husband's not there.

"I've heard the new album, it's incredible. It's different and it's amazing. It's exciting. I'm excited for him."

Gwyneth, who starred in Shakespeare In Love and Iron Man, had dated both Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck before meeting Chris at a Coldplay concert in 2002. They married in 2003.

Talking about what is most important to her she says: "Family, 100 per cent. My family is everything to me.

"I think before you have children your focus is on yourself and you think, 'Oh what am I going to be? Where am I going to live? What am I going to do?'

"And then you have children and they and their happiness, safety and security become the focus of your life. I just feel very lucky that I have them because they have completely given me a real life."

The family live in North London and for Gwyneth one of the city's attractions is that it is so multi-national.

She says: "I moved there because my husband is English and he works there and I like that the children are exposed to so many cultures.

"You feel the whole world in London. I think it's an interesting way for them to grow up, being exposed to so many cultures and having so many countries so close by. I miss being in America as well but I'm lucky to have one foot in each place. So I'm happy."

Such a globetrotting lifestyle is echoed in Contagion, which opens here on October 21, though in the film it results in a deadly disease being spread around the world.

The talent-packed movie — which also stars Kate Winslet, Matt Damon and Jude Law — was inspired by the bird flu outbreaks of recent years and shows how fast panic and misery could spread.

Despite that, such a storyline is not one to give Gwyneth nightmares. She says: "I don't get paranoid about it.

"We live in an over-populated planet and the farming practices, the way we're cutting down forests, we're going to be seeing more of this kind of thing but you can worry or just not worry.

"You can be smart and if you're going somewhere where your body is not used to those germs, there are things you can do but I'm not overly paranoid about it.

"I have lots of fears but I think it's important to remember the reason we have fear is to keep us alive. But it can also very quickly become an irrational thing so I always try to minimise fear.

"President Roosevelt said it best — 'There is nothing to fear but fear itself' — and it's true because fear can be so paralysing and can make you make bad choices."

Raised by Jewish father Bruce and Christian mother Blythe, Gwyneth believes that such disasters occur for a reason.

She says: "I don't believe in religion at all but it's spiritual. I believe in a divine power and I believe that everything happens for a reason and if it's your time to go, it's your time to go."

For Gwyneth, having so many other big-name co-stars in Contagion is an advantage, as it means she does not have so much screen time. While many actresses would love a starring role with lots of lines, she is happier to take lesser roles so she is not away from her kids for too long while filming.

She says: "I still haven't done a starring role in a movie since I had my daughter because it means too many days away.

"I can't do it. So I do good supporting roles, basically."

The make-up artists on Contagion had to make Gwyneth appear sickly for her role as Beth Emhoff — and she found she enjoyed looking somewhat less than her normal, glowing self. She says: "It was fun. I liked all the gory make-up and it was a change, it was nice. It was exciting."

On the red carpet in Italy at the weekend the slim blonde star certainly looked incredibly healthy.

The trim figure and fresh skin is due to a regular exercise regime laid down by personal trainer Tracy Anderson.

Gwyneth says: "I'm very committed to my Tracy Anderson method. I do it every day — well, I do it five days a week.

"So I drop the kids at school and I come home, I exercise for an hour and 15 minutes every single day.

"There's no fairy dust, there's no trick — it's like you do it and it works."

Yeah over the years, there's been many articles about him cheating "Rumors", last one was with Kate Bosworth at a U2 concert. She seems in this article to be so nonchalant about having affairs, if you read between the lines.

I really don't think she accepts cheating from Chris.

I guess what she is plainly saying is that IF it happens, it is not the end of the world.

I'm going to agree with you. Although I don't share G's view on people having affairs, I have to realize she grew up immersed in the world of Hollywood. I think it's pretty common fare in show business.

Obviously I don't know Chris, but he doesn't come across as the womanizer type to me.

When I read the comments, I immediately thought of the situation with Chris's parents this year. :(

I take all these rumors with a huge grain of salt. Over the years there have been many articles about Chris and Gwyneth getting divorced too. There might be something there, but a lot of the time I think people just want to sell magazines.

This!

I don't think she'd stay or continue speaking about her family the way she is.

in the world of showbiz, anybody know. has lots of paparazzis. but know nothing . there are many of celebrities who lie about their familly life, they will even rent babies, and say that their children, wifes/husband etc..., lying to the press magazines, to the fans. just to be quiet .

Well everyone knows my views on this subject, and have always said, unless it comes from the mouths of the Martins I would never believe the tabloids and anything they print about their life together.
