March 17, 200620 yr ‘Scrubs’ makes fifth season surge, still a hit NBC’s “Scrubs” proved just that. After this season, the show will become syndicated. Comedy Central bought the rights to the dramedy and will start showing reruns in the fall of 2006. With wacky Zach Braff (“Garden State,” “Chicken Little”), veteran actor John C. McGinley (“Seven,” “Platoon”), familiar face Donald Faison (“Clueless”) and an all-star cast, the show brings comedic medicine better than the rest. “Scrubs” is about medical interns just beginning their careers. It is the plot basis that “Grey’s Anatomy” stole and turned into a drama. The basis of “Scrubs” is about John Dorian, or J.D. (Braff), Turk (Faison) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke). Like most television shows that have made it big, “Scrubs” is unique. Most of the laughs come from J.D., who has hilarious and imaginative daydreams played out for the viewer. Whether it is dancing to James Brown music with beautiful women, dancing to “99 Luftballoons,” or everyone dressing up as “Star Wars” characters, the daydreams let the sitcom go where many others cannot. With J.D.’s imagination at the wheel, any gag or situation can happen. Along with the daydreams, the cast at Sacred Heart makes it all work. On most medical shows, the characters all seem the same, but not on “Scrubs.” Dr. Cox (McGinley) is a sarcastic, tough-love prick who always picks on J.D. He knows the young kid is talented and has potential. Even the small characters shine in this dramedy. A character simply called The Janitor terrorizes J.D. daily. He comes up with new ways to annoy him, whether it is spraying his crotch with water or locking him on the roof. Dr. Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins), the head of the hospital, is possibly the most evil man alive. He manipulates and brings down each doctor, but is so over-the-top that it’s hilarious. A few other characters are featured in the series. Carla is a nurse who marries Turk (Faison) early in the series. Dr. Murphy, or Nervous Guy, was an intern that screwed up and killed so many patients that he became the morgue specialist. Bob, the hospital lawyer who has no self-esteem and sings in a quartet, is just as funny as the rest. The Todd is a dumb surgeon obsessed with wearing thongs and giving high-fives. Most of these characters began as bit parts but grew in popularity so fast that they became regulars. Another huge aspect of “Scrubs” is its soundtrack. Creator and executive producer Bill Lawrence, along with Braff ’s influence, make the show’s music one of the best soundtracks on television. The show has songs ranging from indie to college bands, such as David Gray and Coldplay. The Shins, Colin Hay and The Eels help to get the show’s message across each episode. If you liked the “Garden State” soundtrack, you will fall in love with “Scrubs.’” But don’t worry, there will always be random, crazy ’80s songs thrown in from artists like Erasure or The Bangles. The show is a comedy at heart, but each episode has a profound quote or lesson we all can live by. It is weird that a medical show could have a message each half hour related to our lives. Especially as young adults, we can all learn things from the mistakes these characters make. Trial and error is what life is about, and this show focuses on this so well that you might actually take something away from the show besides laughing at it. “Scrubs” is a great show and will continue to be a successful comedy until J.D.’s imagination runs out, and I think we all know that will never happen. http://www.uwgb.edu
