[NEWS] Peter Van Wood: 'Coldplay copied me'

Featured Replies

Well, based on that video clip, I'd say he has nothing...

The chords are different. The tune does get progressively lower in both songs, but in a different way.

The one real similarity is that both songs use two phrases with eight syllables, making the lyrics interchangeable between the two songs. Anyone who has had to study meter (rhythm) in poetry class could tell you why that would happen, and that it happens all the time. 8 syllables (4 metrical feet) creates a stable pleasing line of poetry or song with a whole range of possibilities for rhythm depending on which syllables are emphasized. It's pretty standard, and for a good songwriter it would be entirely subconscious. And actually, even the rhythm within the lines is different.

I could see how on the surface someone who wasn't really listening and knew both songs could have their brains jumble the songs up, but I doubt that Chris has ever even heard his song.

Is he Dutch? I'm ashamed :S

Thank god he lives in Italy, what an idiot.

Doesn't he have something better to do? (probably not)

the guy is in his 80's. He's probably after some retirement money.

good point

I was going to go for slightly senile... he seems to believe it, and at his age I can understand why. But I'm sure you're right as well.

But there has to be an inflated sense of self worth at work as well for him to think they would copy him...

Coldplay copied? I think not.

Wow, the two songs aren't even the same notes...

That's quite a long shot to say that "Clocks" copied it.

Now this is plagarism, a Swedish band using the intro riff to "Trouble" as part of their song = http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=kzKOYUhPjOg

(But since I don't understand Swedish I don't know if they acknowledged the use of the "Trouble" riff though.)

EDIT:

yeah this is a biggest dutch band in holland. I think they used the intro becaue they are a big fan of coldplay. just like coldplay used seven nation army in GPASUYF

^ Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up. :-)

This fact in Italy was reported by several medias, because Van Wood was popular in a tv program that dealt with sport, 'Quelli Che Il Calcio'.

Van Wood said that his grandson of 12 (who is a huge Coldplay fan!!!!!!!!) noted this similitude and decided to inform his grandpa. Anyway, some xperts and soudn engineer will decide what Van Wood can accused.

It's a bit strange, because it is evident that it's NOT plagiarism, but nobody can ensure that Coldplay didn't copy whatever...

This old guy is insane!!I bet they dont even know who he is!!I hear nothing that resembles Clocks! And if Coldplay were to use a riff or sample or something they would ask permission just like they did with Kraftwerk.

it's a dutch band from the netherlands

they're singing about the seaside

i'm not a fan or something and i'm not defending them, but if you listen to the original one ( http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=hty9kOJSDmo ) you can see that they only used the intro for the live version

but that old dutch guy is an idot :D

come on, do you know how many bands have copied coldplay!?!

remember that ashlee simpson song that has the exact rip as square one has!

The more I listen to it the more funny it gets hahaha:lol:

He's an idiot. It's not even similar. 3 notes in the same sequence doesn't make plagiarism.

That's fucking ridiculous, the songs sound really nothing alike.

Using his logic and comparison of songs, I could argue that "In Da Club" by 50 Cent stole from "Where the Streets Have no Name" by U2. What a tool.

HEY! I walk and talk and Chris Martin walks and talks. HE FOOKIN COPIED ME! * Calls lawyer to file suit and investment banker to manage my large cash award*

Is the oldman drugged or what??? maybe chris or the other guys didn't even know that song existed in those times

i think if coldplay really did it, they will not shame to tell their fans. because they also told out they using someone's iff in Speed of Sound when they played in Storyteller...i think this guys just too boring

Yeah that would be Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill". Fantastic song in itself, but Coldplay's own take on the synth melody is an incredible creation.

What a funny old man.

We all write on a big big song!

By the way, it sounds not like a plagiarism. Its a little bit similar in the melodycharacter but not the same! I bet there are a lot more of sounds alike songs than Clocks, which use the same melody! But they are not that successfull! I m sure, that Coldplay dont listen that kind of old music and like it that much that they stole a part of it! Its just an accident!

And i heard many times songs which sound like Coldplaycovers!

Its absoulut absurd!

where did you all hear the song ?

If Mr Wood manages to take the case to a court, the court will turn around and set a music expert on all of Mr Wood's tracks to make sure nothing he has released is copied from an earlier song.

:laugh3:
