Are We Too Hard On X&Y?

Featured Replies

We always bash X&Y and talk about how bad it is. Sure its a level below AROBTTH and Parachutes, but i feel we give it less credit than it deserves. Its my least favorite CP album, but its still a great album. We got some of our best CP songs from it (Swallowed, Fix you, Square one, a message etc...). I think we should be nicer to this album, because its hard to make an outstanding album following the greatest one ever created.

I guess I may be a little too hard on it...I was just expecting so much. I feel like some of the songs weren't mixed very well. I have a mix of What If (a song I don't like very much on x&y) done by tom lord alge(? that's what it says in my itunes) and the piano and other instruments just really pop out and make it a much better song.

But I do love A Message and Fix You and a few others.

They had a lot to live up to after AROBTTH. People were expecting sooooo much, that anything was going to be a let down. I think we all focus too much on how it wasn't a good as AROBTTH and forget the good songs on it.

Square One, Talk, and X&Y are some of a favorites.

I like it alright, but the thing is that a lot of it just doesn't seem original or groundbreaking or something...

But it's okay.

X&Y is unfairly targeted. AROBTTH is great on first listen - X&Y takes a few to sink in. Songs like X&Y, Fix You, Swallowed In The Sea, even Square One - they are all fantastic. It's just as good - but very different. Don't think of it as AROBTTH 2.

I hate Fix You. Could they make a worse song. I think thats the reason i hate XY, the songs didn't have depth and seemed as though they were rushed. I think after VLVODAAHF i might turn my back on XY forever!!

I still love X&Y...

there are my favorite songs in that album and I'm hope in that the new album will be good too!

'even that I don't like the title of the album' I hope the new songs will be wonderful as usual...

After a band comes out with a really good album, the follow up is really difficult because the majority of fans are hoping for something that sounds just like the last, but if the band does release something that's TOO similar to the last album, the band gets criticized for lacking originality. Most of the time it's a lose-lose.

Coldplay is a band that knows that they need to evolve from album to album. and I think us fans need to be open-minded enough to know that trying to come out with two more albums in the same style as AROBTTH wouldn't work out at all.

Yes, I prefer AROBTTH to X&Y but I don't think that there was anything horribly wrong with X&Y either, it was simply different. We know from Bob Dylan and Radiohead that bands change, and we'd be complaining just as much if coldplay stayed the same. So please, no one go jumping out the window if LP4 turns out to be a Kid A of sorts.

Well, for me, X&Y is above Parachutes and below AROBTTH for just a bit, I'm not hard with it, I think I'm harder with Parachutes

I still love X&Y for sure, and they have a few good songs in it.. But, there are also two or three songs those are not good enough (for me).. For AROBTTH and Parachutes, all songs are fantastic and at least only one song sounds distracting...

I liked it, the thing is it wasn't going to be the same as AROBTTH or Parachutes, it was always going to be different, like the next album will be again.

^Jizo, I think I saw Chris say that quote in your siggy in an interview on TV a long time ago, before I knew much about Coldplay. I'll never forget that quote. It made me like Chris straight away. I wish I could see that interview again.

The BEST songs on X&Y are the fast rocking songs, like White Shadows, Low, Talk. What If and especially X&Y (that chorus!) are also IMMENSE. These songs are so much fun.

It tapers off with all of the mushy, saccharine crap like A Message, SITS, and Fix You. GAG ME. These type of songs on X&Y don't have the same heart or flowing lyrics that earlier Coldplay ballads had. They are a huge step down. This is where the album fails.

Personally i love X&Y. Yes some of the track on there are a bit off, but on the whole most of them are brilliant.

Square one i think is fantastic, same with what if, white shadows is amazing, Fix you to me has to be one of the most powerful songs ive heard, think it means more to you when you realise its written about death and then you loose somone, to me thats when i fully appreciated the song. Talk is one of my favourites, espically the 80's sounding keyboard towards the end, they really captured a feeling with that song. X&Y is very good grows into a great sounding song, speed of sound, a message, low, the hardest part all great. The others are ok not to sure on til kingdom come.

There sound changed a bit from rush of blood, to some it was a nice change to others it wasnt. As good as rush of blood was, if Coldplay kept producing the same sound people would get bored. Chris has said they like to experiment with sound, because they can only produce a album every couple of years thier artistic growth is slow. He also said that they worked upto be a great big band just so they can go back and create thier own songs with out people butting in. Its all on the cambell interview on youtube.

X&Y was a different sound but was still the Coldplay sound if that makes sense. There not going to stick to sounding like Parachutes and rush of blood, as we know with this new album. But i have confidence in there future work as they are a very talented band. Best thing is to not get so hyped about new albums if you do you can become to expect to much and then end up dissapointed, all the hype, over does everything and then when the albums comes out people say oh thats not as good as i thought it was which is exactly what happend with X&Y. Its a brilliant album but people were excepecting to much because it got to hyped.

And agreed above, love White Shadows - awesome song on the album. I know what you mean about the coldplay sound stuff Glen, very true :)

I think the best songs in X&Y are fix you, white shadows, talk and square one...!!!

XY was just a bit poppy for me. When i listen to it from square one to the end, it dosent sound like songs, or albums which would go down in the books(OK Computer, Parachutes, AAROBTTH, etc) Compare Politik to Square one. It kicks its arse in every single aspect. Even though square one was one of the better tracks on the album. But that just tells you something about the album. I do think its a good album just not their best but worst and definitely not a classic!

XY

XY is a great cd but its not on the same level as parachutes or a rush of blood remember they scraped the original cd so it could have been better who knowS!!!! i hope "VLVODAAHFHFISHFIFDHSFDIS" is better or whatever is called:thinking:

Cheery music is what this globe needs. X&Y was a little cherrier than AROBTTHead, but I'm hoping for lots on mindless, inane pop songs with little deep meaning.:P

Fine album.

It's just not better than Parachutes or AROBTTH, but still... a very good album.

X & Y is a great album, they did an amazing job there, maybe it was not as good as arobtth or as others expected, but it is still a good album, it is different and you have to get used to it

I'm not too hard on it, it's my favorite Coldplay album. I thought it was brilliant, and had a fresh sound to it.
