Violet Hill To Be Released As 'Download Only' In Three Weeks Time

Featured Replies

Just got an email from someone who works at London IMAX who tells me that Coldplay's new single, Violet Hill, will be released as an internet download in three weeks time, according to Chris Martin.

Chris was spotted at the London IMAX cinema where he told the worker that the single would be a download only. Chris was on his way to seeing the Rolling Stones musical film "Shine A Light".

[Thanks Max]

Oooh cool. Thanks for the info :D

It was nice of Chris to tell the guy :)

Why would chris tell a worker at IMAX that Violet Hill will be a download only? ;)

maybe because it was a faster way than waiting prospekt's message, to let us know it... :P

I'm happy about this news cause it could mean there will be a different single on CD out in june... maybe really 42 :D:D

Download only? What? Please tell me this means Violet Hill will be released to download in three weeks and the CD formats a few weeks later a la most first singles off album nowadays and not what I think it means.

But still, 42 as first real single is still a possibility.

Edit - the more I think of it, the more plausible it seems. Violet Hill as a download-only preview on May 5, then they've got a month to promote 42 or whatever the 1st single may be so they can release it physically a month later, 1 or 2 weeks before the album comes out.

The employee was a Coldplay fan and asked him so Chris was nice enough to tell him.

He in turn was nice enough to tell Ian ;)

This is very much like what Keane did with their last album, releasing a video of Atlantic to the music channels and as a download a month or so before the album, whilst their main single was Is It Any Wonder, which came out much closer to the albums release.

So this way we get an extra song on the radio, and an extra video.

And I was nice enough to tell everyone else :P

Seriously, I have no reason to doubt that this isn't true, but as with everything that isn't officially confirmed there will be sceptics. At least in the meantime it keeps the interest going whilst Prospekt is bombing all around the world in his private jet :)

Anyone got any stats on CD single sales from the last few years - do enough people still buy them to warrant the cost of producing and distributing them? Or are they dirt cheap to produce anyway? I'm just thinking, with Prospekt saying that 2 songs might be released independently, did he mean 2 songs that weren't on the album? Maybe Violet Hill is the lead single to build the hype and get people to buy the album and future singles will be songs not off the album, in order to make sure people download them... thereby guaranteeing they'll make more money off any single releases? You follow? No... ok, ignore me. Just a thought I had.

I have a feeling given EMI's much publicised problems of late, they'll do as much as they can to maximise their profits from this album. Its sink or swim from their point of view, so the more singles/albums/downloads/promotional items they can sell, the better.

More details on Chris: He was at the IMAX on Friday afternoon and was with an Australian woman and and English man. Apparently he wore his hood up for most of the film! :stunned:

The rest of us mere mortals would probably get dodgey looks or even kicked out for wearing our hoods up during a film! Ah, the perks of celebrity! :D

But of course, apologies! :D

in answer to your question Fixed, i made inquiries at a Virgin megastore the other day about upcoming Coldplay releases and apparantly they don't sell physical singles in most places (at least in Australia) anymore... now you go into a store and they just burn the single track onto a blank disc for you.... i was so surprised by what i had just heard to even ask whether you get any artwork or anything with it.

if its a cost cutting trend, it wouldnt surprise me if its going on in other countries too..

defeats the purpose of buying the single if you ask me.. such a shame...

It really does seem plausible

I mean, weren't they thinking of releasing violet hill as a promotion anyways? well that's kinda what they're doing, except... not for free! :P

Well this is good news.

:D

It also makes me happy that chris was nice to his fan by telling him the information, he's a good guy chris is.

unless you're holding a camera

three weeks?

we don't have to wait too long! :)

*cough* i hope we'll get a leaked version a few days before.

or... a few WEEKS before ;)

hey... somebody check limewire :laugh3:

i'm kidding.... but seriously

Just had a thought. I reckon if they relaunch the site, Violet Hill will be playable either through a media player in the corner (hopefully with previews of other songs, but I'm not holding my breath, one song will do me for now) or possibly with the video they filmed in Sicily. The song would then be available for download in three weeks as Chris has said, but we'd still get a preview early like Prospekt/that locust7 guy have said.

Here's hoping!

or... a few WEEKS before ;)

:sneaky: already checked. Nothing :( There was a lot of downloadable things that said 'Coldplay #8 Violet Hill - Viva La Vida' but not of them worked. probably fakes or advertisements.

As much as I want to believe they guy who heard it, why would he say we're gonna the physical release on May 6th and hear the song sooner than we think?

Three weeks seems longer than I was hoping. I was praying to hear it this coming week, maybe in a day or two. :\

If its a download only, it seems very unlikely to me that it'll leak. Unless of course the video is going to be out sooner.

But download only means no physical promos, meaning no-one but the bands management to leak it, doesn't it? I really hope i'm wrong though :(

hmm... well hopefully if this is true either it will be played on the radio or we will get to see the video before this download comes out... 3 weeks is a little longer than i was hoping!
