busybeeburns
Things couldn't have gone worse for Tottenham. I'd love them to, but it's almost impossible for them to get to the semi-finals, let alone the final. It could have been a lot worse, they could have lost to Milan and Arsenal beaten Barca! Navegador
It could have been a lot worse, they could have lost to Milan and Arsenal beaten Barca! I'm talking about this particular draw. Better to go out against a big gun than show your true colours and stumble to a relative minnow. When I first read this I was like "WTF, this doesn't make sense", but then I remembered it's Tottenham we're talking about

mc_squared
Indeed. I'd rather him be in a different league. Not because he annoys me that much, like Ronaldo used to, but just because everything about him bores me. It gets worse. Josh42
Did somebody say "fix"? Why fix it when they could beat anyone anyway? Agreed. And my worried comment was more of a 'Shakhtar is a wild card who I'm sort of afraid of' than anything. People are saying they're the easiest team, but I don't know...they're different from other teams Barca normally plays. Maybe I shouldn't be worried, but it'll certainly be an exciting tie. Better to go out against a big gun than show your true colours and stumble to a relative minnow. I think Tottenham certainly has a shot against Real. Prince Myshkin
Tottenham aren't that good. Everyone has a chance against everyone obviously. They are the fifth best team in the Premier League though, by quite a way.

Guest howyousawtheworld
Well that isn't saying much, considering what a poor standard the Prem has been this season.:dozey: Too right. The standards within the Premier League have fallen considerably in these last two seasons. I'd say the Premier League peaked in the years between 2004-2008, with the Arsenal and Chelsea PL winning sides of 2004 and 2005 being utterly immense. Now La Liga is quite comfortably ahead in terms of having the biggest names and as ever technical quality.

The Premiership has definitely been interesting and entertaining this season (with lots of unpredictable results), but this has had more to do with the dearth of quality more than anything else.:( The very best players such as Ronaldo and Messi all seem to want to play in Spain these days. Tnspieler1012
Premiership has more depth though. La Liga is such a two horse race that there's no point even following it outside of el classico imo.
Prince Myshkin
Second game in a row that Rovers have had a penalty given against them 'which usually aren't given'. If refs consistently gave them fair enough. Just really annoying that we are in a desperate position and getting no luck. Big point today in a 6-pointer when we went 2 down. You guys can all carry on talking about the big teams now.

Reilly
While it can be argued that the Premiership teams in the Europa League have failed, I don't care, the Premiership as a whole has shitloads more talent overall. There are countless examples of players who have failed to make any impact in the Premier League and go to Spain and suddenly become a valued star, for me the quality hasn't weakened at all, it's just that every game is so incredibly tight that the most miniscule mistakes are punished by Premier League teams. You watch Spanish, Italian, especially French football, the organisation and ability isn't on the same level. I find this concept that teams who dominate a league somehow mean the league as a whole is of a better class, does that not show that the league generally is of a worse class? Mindfuck logic there, surely at the top level of such a massive sport you would expect teams in the top level to be able to compete with eachother generally, if one team has the ability to walk to a league title then sure the rest clearly aren't up to a world class level and therefore the league isn't as class generally. "BUT BARKA SCORED A THOUSAND POINTS THIS YEAR SPANISH FOOTIE IS ACE" Too right. The standards within the Premier League have fallen considerably in these last two seasons. I'd say the Premier League peaked in the years between 2004-2008, with the Arsenal and Chelsea PL winning sides of 2004 and 2005 being utterly immense. And I think me, you and Mark can agree, that for 2 teams to win the league that convincingly yet not win the Champions League both years, is utterly abysmal. :dozey: [/sensationalistic]
Josh42
The Premier League has more depth (outside of Barca and R Madrid, the Premier league would wreck La Liga), but I enjoy watching Spanish football more. Not sure why...I guess the way they play is just more entertaining to me. If they would actually air the Brazilian and Argentine Leagues here, I'd rather watch those. Reilly
My favourite is French football, but not because I think it's of the highest quality but because it's the most entertaining. And myp2p.co.uk regularly shows Argentine and Brazillian football (if only 'big' matches).
mc_squared
The simple fact is that you could throw a blanket over all the teams below Spurs because they're all equally poor or incredibly inconsistent. With all due respect to Liverpool, they must be amazed to be in sixth position after the season they've had!:dozey:
deaths_friend
i would agree that technically La Liga is clearly superior to the EPL but in terms of how interesting they are to follow i would say EPL by a mile. of course much of that would have to be due to the amount of media attention EPL gets down here compared to La Liga. Josh42
Almost all football leagues are really uneven. Here in the US, the sports leagues are all regulated more (with salary caps, player drafts, etc.), so each team has a much better chance of getting good with a few years of good management. That isn't the case with football leagues, where one team with a lot of money can sign 11 of the top 30 players in the world without much trouble. The first 10 years of the MLS were pretty lame because it was unclear which teams were dominant. But now there's the beckham rule which lets owners pay a couple big players like Marquez, Angel, and Henry loads of money, but the team still fits under the salary cap. Since some teams don't even have enough money to consider buying players of that caliber, the wealthier clubs (and clubs that generate the most revenue) get a leg up. As of last season it seems that the MLS might have a consistent big 4 consisting of LA, NY, Seattle and Salt Lake. Still waiting for a relegation system though... Still waiting for a relegation system though... most if not all australian sports are run like that. our domestic rugby league comp has been running in its current form for 13yrs now and we've had 8 different winners. the only team has dominated the competition was caught for breaching the salary cap by 30% last year. the aussie rules competition is likewise. i mentioned a few posts ago that our current a-league champions the brisbane roar have gone into administration, which just shows you how little money has to do with success in this country. but by the same token you don't have teams that are amazing to watch because they are filled with superstars which is one of the biggest plus points for european football particularly the champions league. at the end of the day each format has its pros and cons and sport will always be awesome :D
mc_squared
Football fan falls 20 feet from stand while celebrating goal By Mail On Sunday Reporter Last updated at 1:50 AM on 20th March 2011 Comments (1) Add to My Stories A football fan who plunged 20 feet from the upper tier of a stadium while celebrating his team's goal has been described as 'very, very lucky'. The 35-year-old Cardiff City fan was watching his team when he toppled from the upper tier of the away end at Millwall's New Den in Bermondsey, south-east London. He suffered head injuries and was treated by medical staff at the ground for around 20 minutes before being rushed to hospital. 20 foot fall: Emergency services treat the 35-year-old fan after he fell from the upper tier at the New Den, Millwall He was initially said to be in a serious but stable condition, but the Metropolitan Police later said he had minor injuries. London Ambulance Service said the fan had a 'reduced level of consciousness' following the accident, which happened moments after his team scored the opening goal, but he was not unconscious. Speaking after the game, which ended 3-3, Cardiff City manager Dave Jones said: 'I couldn't give two hoots about the result after that. One or two of the players saw it, and Craig (Bellamy) said it made him feel physically sick. 'We don't know much about him, but all we'll say is that we as a club send our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Police officers cordon off a section of seating after a person fell from the upper tier during the npower Championship game yesterday 'We desperately want to do well for our supporters and as a club we have a duty to them. At the moment, we are all just concerned about that guy.' Millwall manager Kenny Jackett also expressed his concern, saying: 'We wish the lad well who fell from the stand.' A Metropolitan Police spokesman added: 'His injuries are not life threatening. He is a very, very lucky man.' The accident, which happened moments after Cardiff's opening goal, is not being treated as a criminal matter. The Championship match ended 3-3.
