Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho sets Wayne Rooney 48-hour deadline

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has given Wayne Rooney 48 hours to decide if he wants to leave Manchester United and move to Stamford Bridge.

United insist Rooney is not for sale and he was outstanding as the sides played out a goalless draw on Monday.

"The person that started the story has to finish the story. For the good of everyone it is time to finish the story," said Mourinho.

"One way or another he has to say 'I want to leave' or 'I want to stay'."

He suggested the 27-year-old striker himself was the catalyst for Chelsea's move saying "he told someone very important in his career" that he wanted to leave United.

Asked how long he was prepared to wait before moving on to other targets - with Anzhi Makhachkala's Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o understood to be the alternative - Mourinho replied: "Twenty-four hours, 48 hours."

He added: "If you look at a manager like me, a club like us and the people who work at the club with me, we are not silly enough to try and get a player from a big club that doesn't want to sell.

"We are not silly enough to try something if somebody didn't start it."

He added: "After that, if he wants to leave he has to say - or if he has decided now he doesn't want to leave any more then he has to say."

The former Everton forward was given huge support throughout by United's fans and indeed Chelsea's supporters who want him to switch to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues boss said: "He was a real professional. He played for his club, the club that pays him, and tried to win.

"He tried to score. He played a fantastic match in difficult circumstances and I praise him. You have to say it was fantastic because many players in this situation can't express themselves."

Mourinho also praised the support Rooney received from United's supporters, saying: "It was fantastic. In other countries it would not be possible. It was very English."

He also dismissed speculation that Juan Mata, left on the bench at Old Trafford, would be sold as he said: "He is very important to Chelsea and the stories coming out are nonsense. No chance - Juan goes nowhere."

Mourinho tick tic.. . I am tell you all he will be more anoying than ever...

I was surpraised last night he did not start trying to be like the composer he became here.. to get a crowd to sing anti songs directed to him louder.

he is not intrested in Rooney and just playing games..

If Chelsea sign Samuel Etoó its over...there is no other striker like him in the world even with him being 32 he has at least 3 seasons in him due to his imense fitness is is a machine. He is the best out and out striker Ive seen in real life and I have seen a fair few.

Paddy Power apologise for Billy McNeil tweet

Paddy Power apologise for Billy McNeil tweet

BOOKMAKER Paddy Power has apologised for making a joke on Twitter about Celtic legend Billy McNeil during yesterday’s Champions League group stage draw.

The former Parkhead manager was mocked by the betting firm on the social media site after he struggled to open a ball containing team names.

The small containers also troubled Johann Cruyff, 66, and Luis Figo,40, during the draw in Montreal. However it was 73-year-old McNeil that was the target of Paddy Power’s tweet. The @paddypower account tweeted: “If you want to ever frustrate Billy McNeil, buy him a Kinder Egg.”

The tweet attracted a storm of protest from Celtic fans who threatened to boycott the Ireland-based bookmaker.

@mconway1888 tweeted: “That will be the last time I bet with @paddypower after the Billy McNeil tweet.”

@luckyjim1968 said: “Paddy Power made a comment about Billy McNeil not being able to open the balls for the draw. Unknown to them he has arthritis.”

While ‏@Donnster added: “Think the apology from @paddypower was pathetic! Present a sizeable donation to Billy McNeil for the Celtic charity fund!!!”

Paddy Power removed the tweet and apologised to offended fans by tweeting “I just want to apologise for any offence by our tweet about Billy McNeil”.

Celtic were drawn Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax in yesterday’s showcase which was watched by millions around the world. The former Celtic captain, who lifted the European Cup in 1967, was assisted by UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantimo during the draw.

He told The Sun: “We’d rehearsed things in the morning and I was uncomfortable trying to carry it out. For whatever reason I found the balls extremely tight to twist. I was also a bit nervous. As soon as the draw started by worst fears were realised. Thankfully Gianni was there to help me and we had to laugh about it. The alternative was me there all night trying to open the balls and Europe waiting for the draw!”

A spokesman for Paddy Power said that the tweet was part of “our light-hearted commentary” and pointed out that the tweet had been deleted and an apology made.
