Am I the only one who actually likes the strip? Better than monotonous claret & blue. All so last season! ;)

its 'american football', there's just no point in adding the nationality in America because its so popular.

Guess what? There are britons that dare to play that thing the yankees call "football"! TRAITORS!

Disgraceful! They should all be rounded up and sent to the Tower.:rolleyes:

However, calling it "football" is still a total misnomer as the sport is far more about throwing than kicking.:smug:

Two hundred and sixty officers were on hand to control the situation

Violent clashes after Southampton and Portsmouth FA tie

Football fans and police have clashed in Southampton after the city's football club lost 4-1 to bitter rivals Portsmouth in an FA Cup tie. Bricks, bottles and chairs were thrown by fans outside St Mary's stadium in violent scenes, with 11 arrests. More than 250 officers, including mounted police, were on duty. Previous games between the clubs have also seen clashes. Over 90 arrests were made at Fratton Park in 2004 and five at the last meeting in 2005. Police have warned there may be further arrests over violence in Southampton after the FA Cup tie against rivals Portsmouth.

Bricks, bottles and chairs were thrown by fans outside St Mary's stadium on Saturday afternoon, with 11 arrests. Investigations are continuing into incidents across the city, including violent scenes in Britannia Road. Despite the trouble, Ch Supt Matthew Greening said the police operation to limit violence had been a success. Hundreds of fans clashed with police outside St Mary's, in what Mr Greening described as "ugly scenes".

Some fans suffered injuries such as bloodied noses, and cars were vandalised.

Officers were also involved in breaking up skirmishes across the city. The clubs had not played each other for more than five years, but previous games had also seen clashes and arrests. The police operation was planned for weeks in advance with 260 officers, including mounted police, on duty.

Thousands of Portsmouth fans were escorted to and from the stadium, through Southampton, by officers. Special trains were laid on to transport them between the two cities. Southampton's city pubs also shut for two hours after the game and a special metal security barrier was brought in to help keep fans apart close to the ground.

Two people were arrested before the game when fireworks were thrown while police were escorting two Portsmouth fans from a police station to the stadium. Mr Greening said he thought the operation had gone well, and that the majority of fans had behaved themselves.

The top four teams in England have been the same for four seasons

Premier League ponders play-offs for Champions League

The Premier League is considering a proposal to introduce a play-off for the fourth Champions League place.

The top four currently enter the tournament but the new idea would mean the teams from fourth to seventh playing in a mini-knockout competition. BBC sports news correspondent Gordon Farquhar said the Premier League has been presented with "a number of ideas for altering the competition's format".

But there will be no changes for three years as the next TV deal is in place. Farquhar added: "Any changes would need the agreement of 14 of the 20 clubs. But the League says there are many options and nothing has been decided."

The move is widely thought to be seen as a way of increasing competition in the Premier League because Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have filled the top four positions in five out of the past six seasons. The proposal was raised at a meeting of all 20 clubs on 4 February and will be considered again when they next meet in April.

The top four in the Premier League is the same so far this season, although Manchester City, Tottenham and Aston Villa are putting concerted pressure on Liverpool, who are fourth. Two years ago the Premier League was widely condemned for a proposal to play a 39th game of the domestic season in Asia. The Football Association, the sport's world governing body Fifa and European body Uefa all rejected the idea and the Football Supporters' Federation (FSF) condemned the proposal as being motivated by money, dubbing it Game 39.

A similar system to the idea of play-offs was introduced by the Dutch Eredivise in 2005-06, with teams finishing from second to ninth competing for a place in both the Champions League and what was then the Uefa Cup.

That idea was scrapped in 2008 for the Champions League, with teams finishing fifth to eighth now vying for a place in the rebranded Europa League.

Its going to be the most watched pre-match handshake for the Chelsea - City match interesting to see what's going to happen. I don't blame Bridge regarding the situation with England if people are going to crucify him they should be aiming it at Terry for starting the whole mess in the first place.

Pompey become first top-flight club in administration

Hope they get the 9 points deduction in their Championship season next year.

They brought it all on themselves with their OTT spending policies, so I have no sympathy whatsoever.
