The Jesus of Uncool: Chris Martin: The Rolling Stone Interview

Featured Replies

i agree with everything said except this

But there's something troubling about his lack of clear political messages. In "Violet Hill," he declares, "I don't want to be a soldier/Who the captain of some sinking ship/Would stow, far below" — adding later, "Bury me in armor." In "Lovers in Japan," he states, "Soldiers you've got to soldier on/Sometimes even the right is wrong." Are these peace anthems or encouragements to valiant warriors? Can they be both? Similarly, the title track seems to be about the end of an empire. But its rousing chorus — "I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing/Roman cavalry choirs are singing" — feels like a rallying cry for a Christian empire. Where's an Arabic violin break when you need one? Coldplay's desire to unite fans around the world with an entertainment they can all relate to is the band's strength, and a worthy goal. But on Viva la Vida, a record that wants to make strong statements, it's also a weakness. Sometimes, to say what needs to be said, you need to risk pissing people off.

i don't think chris is being unclear or hypocritical or safe at all. to me, violet hill is as bashing to current political figures as they come, completely without ambiguities. "i don't want to be a soldier"...that's not encouragement, people. neither is "sometimes even right is wrong," in my opinion. if they're going to relate that line to soldiers in iraq, then it even MORE fits, in my opinion! "even right is wrong," like even what your country and your oath says is right can STILL be wrong, like going into iraq was in my opinion. and chris isn't some freaking christian evangelical! i think you're allowed to mention christian-esque themes without being some sort of christian-rock band or some sort of evangelical like yous ee on TV. jeez, he's said that he has a history with christianity, and he studied ancient history. i think they COMPLETELY missed the point with this last paragraph, and i'm disappointed with RS for saying that because i think their reviews are usually right on with what i think.

then again, i'm also currently pissed at them for giving the lil wayne album 4.5 fucking stars. i mean REALLY, when's the last time they gave 4.5 stars to ANYONE?! i think it might be pink floyd in the freaking '70s. (ok, thats an exaggeration, but REALLY, they never give out 4.5 stars, and the first time they do in aaaaages, it's lil wayne? i don't think VLVOD deserves 4.5 stars, but lil wayne?! WHAT?)

everything else, though, i think is probably the best i've read so far. untinged with gwyneth references, noticing the influences and eno's work...i think i would have bumped it up to 4/5 stars and completely reworked that last paragraph, but other than that i stand by rolling stone's review :D

Just got the magazine today (4.50, by the way? Magazine prices are getting crazy)... I really enjoyed the interview, but I wish it was longer! I kept flipping through trying to find more, but alas, I found nothing. I loved the ending about the movie and tribute concert, though!

The review was sort of odd... I agree that the last paragraph was really off. I was reading it trying to see why it only got 3 1/2 stars, because it sounded like at least a 4 or 4 1/2 star review until that point. But saying that the album sounds like Christian rock and there's a lack of clear political messages... huh? Especially after that interview where Chris explained where the lyrics of Violet Hill came from. I guess maybe if you can't understand the metaphors...?

well rollingstone has no comparisions its a great magazine and has great reviewers and interviewers.!

yeah it's the best review thus far... but I just find odd that about lack of clear political messages and stupid if it's that why they gave the album 3.5 stars; anyway I agree with most of the review, of course I would give the album 4.5 stars, just as a rush of blood to the head

Just had a flash of inspiration. Anyone in the UK who wants a copy should try their local Borders. They ship magazines in from the US. I just checked with my nearest, and Rolling Stone is one they carry but they still have the previous issue at the moment. So if you try in a a few days to a weeks time, they should have a copy.

Hey, here's the scans....my scanner isn't bigger than Rolling Stone, so if you'd like for me to rescan, let me know.

enjoy!

thanks a lot :D

Thanks, great read. I love the bit where he talks about Jonny "He's the only one that's ever made anything I've written sound any good" :nice:

i thought this was a great interview in its entirety :D he was surprisingly open with the interviewer.

...even if he does look a bit like a deer in the headlights on the cover :P

and that photo of him surfing in the article...i'm leaving on vacation to go to my house in the same town that the photo was in/he lives in tomorrow :stunned:.

Yeah, it's obvious he was comfortable with the interviewer. It's nice to see him answering questions seriously for once.

really i don't have not even one single word to explain the greatness of that interview!

And also yeah how great is Chris really!

woah.....................................huge woah...............................!

:heart::love:

i kind of really wonder which bandmember was the one that faked a broken ankle to get off work for a month and then had to keep keys in his shoe to remind him to limp. i'm thinking either guy or chris, but guy is my first guess :P

got the Rolling Stones magazine today

LMAO i loooooooooooove that interview! i could tell that Chris was being half-serious/half-taking piss at the questions thrown at him. *sigh* somehow there'll be readers who'll write in and say how Chris is such a cunt.

the album review, however, i wasn't entire sure as well. the critique was confusing (lots of praise, then jumps to reasons why it gets marked down...in which the reasonings are a little choppy and they've seemed to have come from nowhere!). for instance, was Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends supposed to be political at all? well even if it was supposed to be, the messages of ALL the songs were not going to be straight-forward (which i do recall Chris saying that somewhere else before). it was done in that way to allow us to think for ourselves....?

anyway, aside from that. i honestly would've given 3.5/5 as well, solely because i was really hoping that they would've executed the "new changes" to the sounds of Coldplay as they were implying or intended (or so it seems).

and yes, sometimes in order to do or say what needs to be said or done, you're gonna have to risk pissing people off. i really wish the new album had gone on to do just that. the band has tremendous potential, but it's still not quite showing yet. :\

Great interview by far the best yet! Chris actually makes sense talking about american politics_ am not from america but any choices they make seriously affects the entire world.

Its great to read all the background stuff that made VLV come to life... by far this is Coldplay's best album to date which is weird for me to say seeing that i thought nothing could be better than Parachutes lol:rolleyes:

Yay! I just got this in the mail today. Sweet!

Bump - just read the OP for the first time, and hope others like it as much as I do (even though the 'over half of Americans...' bit really did need an 'among' to make any sense whatsoever, but that's just nit-picking).

Go Chris, and go Obama :)

Chris Martin - Rolling Stone Article?

I was recently told from a neighbor of mine that Chris Martin once thought he was homosexual and contemplated suicide at one time in his life because of it. I think he is referring to the Rolling Stone article from 2008 with Chris on the front with his hand over his chest.

I do not remember reading anything like this - anyone want to clear this up?

He wasn't sure whether or not he was straight or not but in the end he was "swayed by the boobs". I dont think he was ever contemplating suicide.
