Brian Eno: 'Without me, Coldplay would be been zonked out'

Eno has given an interview to an italian newspaper, Il Mattino...

He said something about Coldplay:

In music now there's a sort of ProTools syndrome, a fantastic instrument that allows you to have every sound available. A great opportunity, but often it produces disasters: it's like giving one thousand spices to a cokk. Trying one by one, or adding one to another, at the end you underestimate the main ingredients, the quality of food. It was happened with Coldplay.

Are you repudiating the great work (just finished) with Chris Martin & Co.?

No, but when i listened to X&Y, they were totally zonked out. So I took them into a kitchen ofan italian restaurant. I showed to them the emphasis given to ingredients, to the mix of the tastes, without cooking for a long time, in order to avoid the risk of lacking all the good taste'.

Sorry for translation...it's a shit!

Easy tigers - he didn't exactly say X&Y is terrible; he was a lot kinder than some Coldplay fans are about it! I think CJGW would be the first to say that Brian Eno 'saved' them on this album - taking nothing away from their ability as musicians etc, but he obviously gave them the kick up the arse they needed. And talk about exaggerating a headline!

I think he wanted to say that the way to make music for Coldplay radically changed with him...without compromise intimacy, the emotional aspects and the feelings' flow that Coldplay music has since the start of their career...

I don't think he was criticize the past work of tha band...

Anyway, he was in Naples for the premiere of a musical museum, a tribute to him...

he title of the article is the same reported as this news' one...

Ok, Brian helped them out but he shouldn't act like he's the savior of Coldplay. Remember AROBTTH anyone? X&Y isn't bad at all. Parachutes was all them!

exactly......couldnt have put it better myself...........

Exactly!

Coldplay are the success they are today because of their amazing work on their previous albums-- not because all of a sudden Eno "saved" them.

I honestly believe that even if Eno had not been involved in VLV, Coldplay would still have put out a great 4th album. Eno is giving himself way to much credit.

And no matter how many people love to bash and criticize X&Y -- let's not forget X&Y has sold million of copies worldwide. 737,000 it' first week in the U.S. And with the exception of the track "Low" (in which Eno played backing synthesizer) those numbers and that kind of success had nothing to do with Eno and all about how brilliant Coldplay is.

Maybe he was saying that jokingly?

I hope so.

He really does come off as arrogant here, I don't like it at all.

Coldplay are undeniably one of the best bands in the world. There is no doubt about that.

I KNOW they could have made number 1 in the charts WITHOUT Brian. Their self doubt is what drove them to him in the first place.

Brian should definitely have an ego check though.

But there is a slight chance that maybe he had a sarcastic tone while saying these things.

You know the media completely misquotes celebrities all the time.
