Q. This is a follow up to the roadie question. My son is a 15 year old aspiring musician. He says if he doesn't make it in a band he could be a roadie. Do roadies have music training? What is the scope of their work? It seems like a pretty tough life from Roadie #42's accounts.

The Oracle replies:

You don't have to be trained for certain roadie (road crew) roles but there's a precise knowledge needed to be a tech. A guitar technician for example is responsible for tuning, stringing, soundchecking and maintaining the guitar. There's not necessarily any formal training but a broad understanding of the instrument is obviously going to be helpful whatever the instrument. It is a tough life but they choose to do it but it wouldn't suit everyone. Rather than explain "how to become..." I found a useful site.

Q. Dear wise one, I have asked several questions that have yet to be answered. I will ask this one for a second time. I have a very large Coldplay CD collection however, there is 1 CD I need before my collection can be complete. It is the Safety ep.

Would it be too much to ask the band if they could send me a copy? I am only the biggest Coldplay fan in the US Army. I even missed the last show in my home town due to my last deployment in Afghanistan. Would it be too much to ask for that in return for my sacrifices? Please reply. Thank you!

The Oracle replies:

As much as your sacrifice is a great one, I know of other fans that are stationed in war zones and missed their shows, which is of course rubbish but you are the first to ask for a Safety EP. Unfortunately we don't have any spare copies lying around because as you know they are very limited. You are one of thousands looking to complete their collection and all I can say is, there are fewer copies than people wanting them so be consoled in the knowledge that the tracks on the EP are available in their original state on The Blue Room EP and Yellow single so even though you're missing the physical CD, you're not missing the recordings.

  • I can't give you the reasonings on why things changed, but I can give you an update from what I observed. The Oracle was run by Debs Wild. Debs is still with the band and helps out fans, for exam

Q. Dear Oracle

I saw a video of Will singing and also saw him singing in concert and I was wondering what song it was.

The Oracle replies:

I will assume that it was Death Will Never Conquer as it's been a regular fixture on the Viva tour with Will taking lead vocal. At Christmas he also sang The Pogues (featuring Kirsty MacColl) song Fairytale of New York, so if isn't the former, it'll most likely be the latter.

Q. I was watching MTV world stage with Coldplay, and when the big yellow balls fell from stage during the song Yellow I realized that after the song all the balls despair so I wanted to know what did you do with all those balls??? Their concerts are pretty awesome!!

The Oracle replies:

The balls don't disappear as such, they're actually balloons and people pop them. Some folk have been known to keep hold of them until the end but it's much more fun to bounce them around and pop them!

Speaking of the balloons, I was asked this week what they were made from as we had a fan with a latex allergy attending a concert. The balloons are made from latex and so thought I'd point that out just in case anyone else needs that information.

Q. I saw an Oracle reply on 19 February with regards to emailing. I don't know where to find Coldplay's email address. I sent an email to [email protected] but I don't know if that's right.

Oh mr/ms Oracle, would you please tell me ?

p.s: Is it coldplay or Coldplay ?

p.p.s: My name comes with a hyphen.

The Oracle replies:

Well Hoa-Mi, on the right of this page under the 'submit a question' button you will see 'top tags'. Under those in red is 'more tags'. If you click that and then click 'address' within the tag cloud it will give you your mailing options. The address you used isn't correct.

It's Coldplay by the way.

Q. Chris and Will were both wearing (very) cool duds last night in Melbourne. What's the label with the "V" on the long sleeve tees?

The Oracle replies:

Do you know I think there's strong possibility they're both from Topman! The V was painted on though it's just a customized tee so you could technically get one from anywhere but if it really is, as I suspect, Topman then affordable to all - hoorah!

Q. Hello dear Oracle!

I want to send a letters to Coldplay via email and via snail address and I don't know what to do, because I found two addresses. Should i use this:

c/o PO Box 246

Cheadle

SK8 9AF

or this:

Coldplay

EMI Records UK

EMI House

43 Brook Green

London, W6 7EF

UK

I would be so so grateful if you answer.

Cheers! :)

The Oracle replies:

The first one, don't send to the record label as they'll only get re-directed eventually anyway.

So they get their tee shirts in Topman.

Q. Hey Oracle, me again.

Look, I wanted to get tickets for coldplay in september in Hampden Park. Can You give me a link that shows me exactly what seats are available so I can see if I won't just be watching coldplay from a screen (as i did last night).

Thanks a billion oracle, I really want to go.

The Oracle replies:

If you click here there is a drop down 'view a seating plan' menu; select Coldplay and it will show you the layout.

Q. Dearest Oracle,

in Roadie #42's new report there is a word I don't know and which any online translators can't guess: 'I shall leave you with a portrait of a couple of jetlagged mates.' - What does 'jetlagged' mean?

Big thank you,

best wishes,

Robert

The Oracle replies:

Jet lagged refers to the shift in the body clock from travelling through different time zones. It usually happens during long haul flights east to west and vice versa. It doesn't usually effect long journeys north to south. It is common for a traveller to feel extremely tired and it may take a day to regain a normal feeling.

Q. hello...

i was wondering what brand of piano did chris use in the grammys (or who did the painting on it) thank you

The Oracle replies:

It was once again the band's talented personal assistant Vicki who painted this piano. It was finished just in time for the Grammys.

Q. Dear Oracle, is Ode to Deodorant a Jatravartid song?

The Oracle replies:

I can see why you would ask given that people are making many connections between Coldplay and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Jatravartid invented aerosol deodorant but no, the song is not about them.

Q. Do the guys decide which TV shows or ads they will allow their songs to be played on?

Also, did the "grandmother" ever contact you to say which show she was going to? I'm not a granny but older than most in the crowd and I'm proudly driving many hours to go see Coldplay this summer.

The Oracle replies:

They dont decide on TV programmes. Many are covered by blanket agreements anyway (clearance would be needed if it was to be released on DVD). They do decide on adverts. They havent as yet endorsed a product or featured in a commercial other than the iTunes campaign last year. Trailers are not the same and they dont choose those either. They sometimes discuss which films can/cant use their music.

I'm still waiting to hear from Lynn...

Q. There was a sign at the Perth Coldplay concert directing people to a website where you can buy charity wristbands from Africa. I think Chris was wearing the same ones during the concert. What the heck was the name of this website?? love something-or-other??[/color]

The Oracle replies:

It's Made With Love in Brazil, part of Made With Love, "a non-profit global initiative dedicated to raising funds and awareness for NGOs* aiding women and children in need through the production and sale of fair trade indigenous products".

In case you're wondering, NGOs are non-governmental organizations.

In case you were wondering, that was not me

Q. What do the guys do to stay in shape while they are on the road? I know they have a trainer that travels with them, but what kinds of things do they like to do to workout??

The Oracle replies:

Dan, their trainer, tells me that when they are on the road the hotels normally have decent fitness facilities and so he is able to take them through weights sessions. They vary it from session to session for instance one day circuit training, the next 30 mins weights followed by 30 mins cardio. Jonny enjoys a lot of kickboxing and they have played squash a couple of times. Dan and Guy are running the marathon again so have also been doing some very long runs in various cities. Dan has a case of kettle bells, dumbbells and a bench that travels round with him so they can even train at the gig.
