Ask the Oracle on Coldplay.com (Now in session!)

No, they're not. It would be pretty pointless to start anything new given the MX tour is coming to a close. Those characters have been around longer than the record so if anything it would have made sense to have them from the beginning.

Probably wise to find out what it means before getting permanently inked onto your skin...

ok, who pissed off the Oracle this morning? :P

  • I can't give you the reasonings on why things changed, but I can give you an update from what I observed. The Oracle was run by Debs Wild. Debs is still with the band and helps out fans, for exam

I love prickly Oracle more than any other mood the Oracle can be in.

Q. Hi Oracle, yesterday I tried to order a print online of the crowd panorama photo from the concert I went to, and I got sent an email from the print website saying I wasn't allowed to because it was under copyright. Is this right? I'm not trying to make any money off it or anything, I just wanted the poster to hang up in my room. Any help/advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated! Hope you're having a nice day.

The Oracle replies:

We're not selling them so it's as simple as that I'm afraid.

Copyright isn't always about whether someone intends to make money off an item. They're not of a quality we'd be happy with so we haven't made them available to purchase.

I don't know where you tried to buy it from but as far as I know they aren't and shouldn't be available anywhere else.

Q. Will there be a place where you can buy merchandise at the Coldplay Australian tour 18th of November? Thanks

The Oracle replies:

As always, there will be merch stands at the concerts - there will be several but time your visit well as it can be trickier after a gig with more people heading to them. Obviously people arrive at different times but leave at the same time.

Q. Hi dear Oracle

I have this question that only you can answer

Do (Coldplay) ar taking a year off?

I hear this rumour in A Coldplay Fans page but im not sure. Anyway Coldplay is and it will be always be the best band ever

Greetings From Mexico :)

The Oracle replies:

I'm not the only one who can answer that; nobody can answer that - not even the band.

Decisions are made and changed on a daily basis as to what happens next after a campaign is coming to an end.

The natural thing to do is to take some time off but that has never yet been a year.

The band may be out of sight to the public but that doesn't mean they aren't working in some way or another.

After the Viva tour, the band returned for a Latin American leg. They finished 11th March 2010. They performed a couple of Crisis at Christmas gigs later that year and then re-emerged for live shows in June 2011 while continuing with the writing & recording process.

Who knows how long it will take for the next album? It's not a time frame you should really try and quantify. They will return when they do and the album will be finished when it is. I can't really say anything more than that at this premature stage but I'm sure ( & hope) it will fly by - like last time?!

I miss Tash.

I don't get the answer. Is it me, or is The Oracle - once again - completely missing the point ?

i don't think she's missing the point; she's basically telling that person that there's nothing to be done, because they don't want people to have prints of those pictures because they don't think the quality is good enough, otherwise they'd be selling prints themselves :P

Welcome back Tash ! Hope those few days were cool.

Thanks! Hanging out with friends from far away is the best thing there is. The only thing that wasn't cool was the enormous amount of rain, haha!

She's rather snotty, for some reason.

But I think the poster just wants a better quality print than she can get from her home printer, not a totally professional print. My home printer is just ok for photos so of I want a "nicer" quality, I upload to Shutterfly, and have them print it out for me. . What's the point of having the high res photos if you can't print it out? I think she probably uploaded to Target or Shutterfly to have them print it out for her and they won't because it's copyrighted.

I had never heard of Shutterfly or Target before you mentioned them, but I got the same idea from the question  Apparently Debs did not.

right, but the girl asked for advice and from what i can see the Oracle is just telling her that it's not possible because they have the rights to it and they don't want anyone to have any prints of it. :P

Well, it's not like it's private! They put it out there for people to see, and with the high res, presumably print. I know my home printer wouldn't do a good job printing, so i"d like a photo place to print a better copy for me.

i feel like it's almost like someone uploading pictures to flikr and then a person trying to get nice prints of those without going through the person who originally took those pictures.

Thanks! Hanging out with friends from far away is the best thing there is....

Isn't that the truth. thumbsupv.gif

Glad you had a good time! Welcome back.

I don't think that at all. The panoramas were taken of the fans, and for the fans, at the stadiums/arenas, they're not on a personal website, Coldplay post the links to the photos all over the web, twitter, facebook, Coldplay.com. I wasn't in any of the panoramas, but if I saw myself in one, then I would definitely want a print of it, whether I printed it myself, or had a photo website print it. I don't see what the difference is between making it your computer wallpaper, or screen saver or avatar, and printing out a nice copy to frame for your wall.

The way copyright law works, it's incumbent on the rights holder to "vigorously defend" their copyrights. If they relax the rules to some of the photos, they could potentially lose their copyright protection on all the MX tour photos. Legally speaking, not defending a copyright constitutes an abandonment of same. I suspect such concerns are at the root of their stance on this.

Just my two cents as someone who's dealt with similar issues in the past.

Welcome back Tash ! Hope those few days were cool.

I don't see that at all. Oracle was trying to say (as politely as possible), that there's simply no legal way to get a print of the crowd panoramas. As I posted above, they don't have a choice about defending their copyright, they're legally required to do so if they wish to keep it, plus it sounds like they have aesthetic reasons for not releasing copies themselves. As Oracle says, that's it.
