WHO ARE THEY?

Homespun Londoners who pen nimble, poetic pop songs in the style of The Magic Numbers or Belle and Sebastian. Their lo-fi outlook has also been likened to vintage Lou Reed and Jonathan Richman.

WHY THE FUSS?

The four-piece group's new single, 5 Years Time, is one of the summer's most infectious tunes. Out digitally on July 21, and in hard copy a couple of weeks later, it is a glorious love song punctuated by whistling, ukulele and some wispy backing vocals from Laura Marling. A full-time band member until recently, Marling remains a close associate of the quartet.

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Inspired by his mum's collection of folk albums, singer and guitarist Charlie Fink, 21, started the group in Twickenham at the end of 2006. He was joined by his brother Doug on drums, classical prodigy Tom on violin and former child actor Urby Whale on bass and harmonium. Marling signed up later, leaving to start her solo career. Her brilliant debut album, Alas I Cannot Swim, was produced by Charlie.

AND THEN?

The band bopped until they dropped. They played more than a hundred shows in 2007, touring with Feist and Broken Social Scene before supporting The Zutons on a tour of Britain's forests. Two singles with discerning indie label Young And Lost Club led to a major deal with Vertigo, who will release the band's debut album, Peaceful The World Lays Me Down, next month. A prolific bunch, the group even came up with a complete collection of new material when they were recently given three days to cut some B-sides. Maybe they can release albums two by two.

is Laura Marling still in the band?

Seemingly not...she was the best thing about them

believe me:this new album is fantastic (even without laura marling)

its a more "serious" sound...

^Great move. And yeah, that's the least you can say.

They just made a video for "Our window" and it's SO beautiful and inspiring. It felt like watching a real movie.

And I must post the video for Blue Skies as well, even if it's not new, because it was a master piece, really!

thanks for posting that. I've only heard Blue Skies by them before and I absolutely love it. The video is gorgeous. I thought "Our Window" was also really lovely, but so sad!

I know !! *sigh*

Words cannot describe how much I adore this band.

Same here. I saw them live for the first time a few weeks ago and they were incredible, as I expected them to be. They killed me !

I just think they kind of are artistically perfect. I mean, the thing with Noah And The Whale is that evertime they do something I'm in awe of how artistically perfect it is. And that's something I can't say for any other bands, not even my favourites, there's always a chance I don't like their videos or artwork etc. NATW can be funny and completely random (Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down) or heartbreaking as hell (The First Days of Spring) but it's always done with so much intelligence and taste.

They're working on a new album by the way :) ! Here's what they wrote on their blog :

"We still have a few dates in the summer but the majority of time will be spent hidden away from the glorious sunshine in musical laboratories, alternately cradling my head over a mixing desk and jumping for joy to the rock and roll stylings of our third album in progress. "

Can't wait!
