IS THERE ANY BAND EVEN CLOSE TO COLDPLAY???

Featured Replies

don't get me wrong, i like coldplay, but honestly i'm a bit disappointed with the new album. to me there are just so many layers of music that it's difficult to comprehend and over-complicated. personally i consider Radiohead to be the best band of the last 10-15 years, considering all that they've accomplished. (look at how they changed from the Bends through In Rainbows). I feel that coldplay are definetly one of the more talented bands out there, and I feel that they are honestly really trying to redefine themselves, but i personally think that they should get back to basics because IMO that's where the best work lies (Parachutes, AROBTTH)

Agree...Coldplay and Radiohead ... I respect both of their musical abilities and interests of the world, but RH is much more diverse and seasoned and are still successful without a major label backing or big promotion...some great solo work from Yorke and Greenwood...their shows are always sold out and show much appreciation to their fans with free downloads and webcasts. And are so surprising in their shows, that they have toured with over 50 different songs. I wish Coldplay would tour with more of a diversity of sets. I like their older stuff too! :)

radiohead.

i obviously love coldplay but as far as musical talent radiohead by far exceeds coldplay's skill. theyve also had much more of an impact on the entire music industry. i'd still consider myself a bigger coldplay fan than radiohead fan but at the same time i have to admit radiohead are still pretty far ahead of coldplay.

I think coldplay are easily the best band to come out of this century. Oddly enough there have been very few dominating forces in 21st century music.

They would've been run over by oasis, the verve, nirvana and radiohead in the 90s which was full of said powerhouses, but those types of bands have dropped off the maps as of the last 8 years (which is why everyone compares coldplay to historic bands like radiohead and u2 as opposed to current bands). Who else is there? muse?(although I think technically they started late 90s and has been unsuccessful in making an impact across the pond) the killers? the strokes? the shins? mainly a bunch of niche bands that do what they do really well but don't have the consistency or variety to reach u2-like status.

I'm kind of dissapointed that the past 8 years hasn't merited a lot of young potential for coldplay to compete against for the world's ears. Come a "best of the 00's" vh1 special coldplay will dominate, but who knows whether they would've survived the fierce competition of decades past.

no one in this new century... maybe sigur ros or the arcade fire but the problem is that now only shit music dominates the lists so coldplay don't have too much to compete against; however my fav band ever is coldplay

I think that you can't compare them to anyone. Think about it this way....when Yellow comes on the radio, Who doesnt know the words? If not to the whole song then just at least to the Chorus. No other band writes songs that can be sung at concerts like that. And for Coldplay unlike other band it's not just that one song...If you go to one of thier shows everyone know the words to EVERY song.

Coldplay in a sense has defined the generation of the 00's. They have written songs that everyone knows and likes. Not one person doesn't have at least one of their songs on their ipods or MP3 players.

Coldplay I think may even be alittle underrated and it's only because at the present moment rap and R&B is the most popular.

I think the reason why Coldplay has been dominant on the Alt. scene for the past eight years is because they write songs that people can relate to and understand. They write songs about love and heartbreak, and with lyrics that can truly be understood and the listener can really connect to.

Coldplay will forever be in the minds of my generation, whether it be hearing the intro to Clocks for the first time or singing along to the OOOOOOOHH's of VLV...All I know is that when I get married and have kids....my kids are going to be sooooo sick of Coldplay!!! :D

And as I've said before, Coldplay have something the vast majority of their contemporaries lack - UPLIFTING, ROUSING songs. That's where bands like Radiohead come up well short IMO. Coldplay have the perfect formula.

I saw R.E.M. live this evening, and only a handful of their songs fall into the "uplifting" category, which is one of the reasons the concert was a massive anticlimax after Coldplay last Friday.;)

here are some bands that can be considered good, consistent stuff for the industry, but not better than coldplay:

(no particular order)

1) Keane

2) U2

3) Radiohead

4) Death Cab For Cutie ( I know, not british, but still awesome)

5) The Fray (commercially)

6) Elbow

7) The Kooks

Now, with these artists, I'm not going just by how many albums they've sold (because illegal downloading is a significant part of the music industry and affects the labels and their rankings). this is just my opinion though....

Embrace.

I don't :P

I don't :P

:stunned:

Do you not have an Ipod? :shocked2:

Why are you on coldplaying then??? :\

Just curious...not trying to be a bitch or anything!!

Yes I do have one:P, I just honestly am not into thier music at all, I first posted on this board because I wanted to talk to fans about why they liked Coldplay and there are some really cool people here so I stayed but in honesty I've not heard one Coldplay song I could say I liked, don't get me wrong I'm not saying I hate them, I'm sure thier very nice people but thier music doesn't appeal to me one bit, but if they make other people happy and I know they do make a lot of you happy then good on them.

Okay!!!

Your opinion is your opinion and I applaud you for trying to like them...Is there anything I can do to try and convert you to the 'Coldplay Love"

Have you listened to all their albums...because honestly if your just going on the new one then I really don't blame you. I mean I love it...but I can see why other people dont! :D

I don't think I will ever be converted, they just don't appeal to me, I've gone into a few of thier albums with an open mind and thier not for me at all, the closest I've come to loving a Coldplay song was the Pendulum cover of Violet Hill:)

You like them and thier musics special and very touching to you I'm sure and that's great:) but people are all very different and have have massivly different opinions.

I dont get what you guys are saying ..... but yeah i agree w CObalts comments about how alternatives shifting music

Sigur Ros is the only other band I can listen to almost every song and love it, except for their first two albums which shoudn't count. But Coldplay is the only band I can listen to every song, collaberations, b-sides, everything and pretty much love it cause its Coldplay

Coldplay is the only band I can listen to every song, collaberations, b-sides, everything and pretty much love it cause its Coldplay

spot on....exactly my sentiments

but on another note....it was said earlier (by the gloaming_09) that coldplay has too many layers and then radiohead was offered instead....imo radiohead is far more complex as a band and that is why i dont enjoy them quite as much, i have to sit down and think to enjoy their music

sorry, just found it amusing that we thought the exact opposite thing (if im reading correctly)

Kings Of Leon are the best rock band of the 21st century without a shadow of a doubt! Fantastic songs, Caleb has the best voice ive heard, and they are getting bigger and better with each album! Ive had their new album for a couple of weeks and its fantastic!

A very different kind of band to Coldplay, and they certainly arent as universally liked as Coldplay, but a fantastic band none the less!

lol

I love Coldplay but I know Radiohead would be a better band. But if we were discussing bands to come out during this decade I'd be hard pressed to find someone better. The Strokes, Interpol, Bloc Party aren't in the same league.

totally agree with you. Eventhough VLV is a great album, I still think AROBTTH is the best work they've ever made. It's the perfect album for me. And I have to say a few songs of VLV still doesn't grown on me. There was another thing someone said about the setlists. Something I really like about RH is that they always surprise their fans with a song that isn't really popular but some fans love. Even sometimes they sing B-sides! How great would be for us hear Shiver, Spies, Warning Sign, Amsterdam huh?

A Whisper followed by Chinese Sleep Chant would be pretty amazing.
