Renault Team Manager Flavio Britatore and chief engineer Pat Symonds resign over the Crashgate scandal. What a low for Formula One.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

There are those who still think Ayrton Senna would not have died if Briatore and Benetton hadn't been cheating 15 years ago...

And people are getting so upset about how a deliberate crash would put lives in danger... well so does tampering with the fuel hoses- as Jos Verstappen found out:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyZpASrVAsc]YouTube - Jos Verstappen pitstop fire 1994[/ame]

I used to watch it every week.

Lost interest but I am liking this season because a team other than Ferrari, McLaren and Renault are actually competing/

Lies. It's not on every week.:P;):laugh3:

Yeah, that first corner at Australia has seen quite a bit of action over the years. :laugh3:

Remember 2002 vividly when 8 cars didn't make it past that 1st corner following Ralf Schumacher slamming into the back of Rubens Barrichello. No prizes for who won that race. Not quite as bad as Spa 98 though :laugh3:

Anyhow Space Cadet what do you mean about Briatore and Benetton being at fault for the death of Senna? I know there were major regulation changes which were highlighted during the inquest in 1994 but was that what Briatore was behind? I don't feel sorry for Briatore but it's a real shame seeing Symonds name in the shit. A fantastic engineer who I will miss.

Any of you believe that Fernando Alonso didn't know anything of this? I severely doubt it. He started that race on only 14 laps of fuel, which is incredibly light, and especially surprising considering he started in 15th place on a track where everyone knew wouldn't provide much overtaking. Surely he would have asked Symonds or Briatore "Why the hell do I have this light a car way back on the grid??" Alonso's got questions to answer.

I think suggesting that a company told a driver to deliberately crash is probably the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard, I don't think anyone would put their driver in such a risk like that. If they did they should be very ashamed of themselves and don't deserve to stay in the sport.

They did do that! Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds told Piquet Jnr to crash the car and that's why they've resigned!

Now THAT was a classic. :shocked2: Thought I was watching a Nascar race when it happened.

I'm not saying they're at fault. They aren't. I'm saying that it has been argued (mainly by my dad) that their cheating was what pushed Senna to drive beyond his limit. In other words if they hadn't cheated, he wouldn't be dead.

(I was 11 at the time for the record, so I'm going on what I was told afterwards) As I understand, Williams had the fastest car so Senna would be leading the race until the pitstops. Benetton would always have the fastest pit stop and so would take the lead at that point. It drove Senna a bit mad- he couldn't understand how they did it, and he kept crashing his car trying to catch up. And then he really crashed. He honestly thought he could drive hard enough to win- he even had an Austrian flag folded up in the car in anticipation of winning.

It didn't come out until later that Benetton had been winning races because they had tampered with their fuel rigs. They had illegally removed a filter so they could refuel faster and pass everyone in the pit stops. And it put everyone's lives in danger as that pit fire shows. But of course that was golden boy Michael Schmacher's first championchip so no one bothers to remember it anymore.

Agreed.

Two words: plausible deniability. He didn't know. You don't want the guy doing all the interviews after the race to have to lie when you rig a race like that, so you don't tell him. Cheating 101.

They could, they have, and they did. See the post with the video.

Space Cadet I see what you mean so you pretty much believe that Senna crashed because of driver error. It's a fair assumption particularly highlighting Benetton's illegal fuel rig (they were also found guilty of having an illegal launch control system but the FIA didn't punish them because they couldn't prove that it had been in use!). However I'll give Schumacher slack because he didn't chase controversy at Benetton like Briatore did. He had had enough of Benetton by 1995 partly due to the dramas surrounding the team and wanted to start a fresh new challenge at Ferrari. However I blame Senna's death on the Williams car as it wasn't any where up to standard early 1994 as Damon Hill admitted although Senna was doing his absolute best in it. However it was ultimately the track safetry of Imola which cost Senna his life. Ironically Senna expressed his concern of the Tamburello corner just before the 94 season advising that it best be protected with tyre walls on the outside.

Looking forward to the race next weekend, i hope for good weather. Spotted Mika Hakkinen in the mall on Monday he was here for some Johnnie Walker promo events.

What a legend Mika is. If it rains in Singapore it rains heavy right? And if it does so I can not see the race going ahead because the reflection the water will give off from the floodlights will be like them driving through fog.

Attending the race was fun the atmosphere was great, thank goodness for good weather it had been quite shitty i.e. rain leading up to it. Throw in a Travis gig and it just adds to the awesomeness.

Did manage to meet Heiki Kovalainen and spotted Robert Kubica, Fernando Alsonso and Romain Grosjean.

great to hear that you had a fun time in Singapore!

there were like rumours that the govt tried all means necessary to try & somehow control the weather to not rain last year...cos practically everybody (media, layman, teams) was speculating that it would rain at some point during the race. as it turned out, it was a nice "no rain" weekend for me last year. :)

Yep, with Raikonnen going BACK to McLaren! To be honest even 2 months ago I would have told you to "fuck off!" if you told me Raikonnen would be back in the silver cars because I never thought he would want to go back there. But in the incredible world of f1, almost anything can happen and it usually does! It's going to be wierd seeing him back in McLaren overalls.

It certainly is going to be strange to see him in the McLaren overalls. Actually, I was expecting him to quit Formula 1, and to continue his career in the WRC (where he can compete with his Fiat Punto S2000, because the S2000 rules apply for the WRC in 2010). I'm really looking forward to the new season. With Alonso at Ferrari, Raikkonen back to McLaren, possibly Kubica at Renault (Alonso's replacement), and the possible Barrichello/Rosberg switch (Rosberg from Williams to Brawn, and vice versa for Rubens) it certainly is going to be an interesting season.

However, these facts also bring up some questions. First of all, can McLaren handle two top-notch drivers? It didn't work out with Alonso and Hamilton in 2007, so for them I hope the Raikkonen/Hamilton (two world champions) combo does work. (Well, I don't, because I'm a Ferrari-fan, so I hope the Massa/Alonso combo workes out better than McLaren's one :D). And it also raises the following, less important, questions: Where's Heidfeld going to race, where's Kovalainen going to race, and what about Kazuki Nakajima?

There are also rumours about Toyota leaving F1 after this season, so -If Toyota leaves- that would make a total of 5 drivers looking for a seat (Heidfeld, Nakajima, Kovalainen, Glock and Trulli).

I would be surprised if Nakajima stays at Williams has not scored any points yet this season and it has been Rosberg carrying the team. The BMW team might still be around though.

As for the drivers that might be without a team the no brainer would be to just join one of the new teams entering into Formula 1.

No, Nakajima is only there because of a deal with Williams and Toyota so Williams can use the Toyota engine. Next year it is unlikely they'll be with Toyota and more likely with Renault. Also a lot of rumours persist surrounding a possible move for Barrichello to Williams next year after Brawn GP decide to opt for Rosberg, a German driver, which Brawn's partners for next year, Mercedes, want. Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg could be the Williams pair next year.

Alonso always wanted to race for the Scuderia, so I think he won't be doing that (as much as before).

Also, Hooray for Vettel! He should win the title this year, however I'm not sure if he can manage it. He's 16 points behind Button, with only two races to go.
