Your Ranking of Coldplay Albums & Why...

Featured Replies

So am I correct that judging by these lists most people became coldplay fans during X&Y-VIVA era?

nope! I can put an exact date onto the day they captured me. 20th June 2002. I must have been aware of them before then as Ian was a fan, played Parachutes, and ran a website about them, but I don't have any recollections of them really entering my consciousness before then. Then he took me along with him to Liverpool, and I liked them so when he wanted to see them again, I went with him again. And at some point he stopped paying for my tickets because I was no longer going to keep him company, I was going for me!! :laugh3:

I've listened to coldplay from as far back as 2003 but when A Rush came out thats when I fell deeply in love with the band

1) Parachutes

Why? - You really don't see Coldplay like this anymore. Not that that's a bad thing, but I really don't think anything can beat the bittersweet intimacy of Trouble or Yellow's soaring, discordant introduction. There is nothing to dislike about this album.

Top Songs - All of them. ALL.

Not-So-Top Songs - The silence between each track

2 [tie]) Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends

Why? - Combining the lofty, soaring compositions of X&Y, the intimacy and raw emotion of Parachutes and the edge of Rush of blood, VLV takes everything good about Coldplay and condenses it into one album. It's a celebration of both the old and the new.

Top Songs - Viva La Vida, Cemeteries of London, Lovers in Japan, Strawberry Swing

Not-So-Top Songs - Yes (ew), Reign of Love

2 [TIE]) X&Y

Why? - Though it was the least critically acclaimed and gave everyone a reason to hate Coldplay, this one holds a special place in my heart because it's the first Coldplay album I've listened to. I love the scenic, outer-space sound that shines forth on nearly every track.

Top Songs - A Message (my favorite song), Swallowed in the Sea, Square One, What If

Not-So-Top Songs - Low, White Shadows

3) A Rush of Blood to the Head

Why? - While a great album, Rush just didn't seem to hook me like the other three albums. It must've been the lack of emotional love songs, like Sparks or A Message. Regardless, it's still amazing, and the explosive introduction can't be beat.

Top Songs - Politik, Clocks, Amsterdam, A Rush of Blood to the Head

Not-So-Top Songs - A Whisper

Choosing a number one is very hard, because I love both Viva la Vida and A Rush of Blood to the Head almost the same.

1. A Rush of Blood to the Head

Well, this made number one, because the song that made me notice Coldplay is on it (Clocks) and because my no. 1 favourite Coldplay song is on it too (God Put a Smile upon Your Face). And overall, all the songs are really great and there are no low points on this album in my opinion.

Top 5: God Put a Smile upon Your Face (!), Politik, Daylight, Amsterdam, Clocks

2. Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends

Seeing and hearing most of these songs live helped a lot (I mean: Lovers in Japan live is brilliant) and because I saw Coldplay live for the first time during the Viva la Vida tour helped too ofcourse. The songs are ok too :P

Top 5: Viva la Vida, Chinese Sleep Chant, Life in Technicolor, 42, Lovers in Japan

3. Parachutes

The old(er) Coldplay. This is such a beautiful album, that combines sweet little songs (Don't Panic, Sparks, We Never Change) with powerful rock ballads (Shiver, Yellow). I would kill to see them perform Shiver live, my no. 2 favourite Coldplay song.

Top 5: Shiver, Don't Panic, Sparks, Yellow, Everything's Not Lost

4. X&Y

This album made me love Coldplay, made me a huge fan. Still I think, it is not as good as the rest. It's too long and some songs don't feel right. But that doesn't change the fact that it is still a beautiful piece of work and where would we be without great anthems like Square One, White Shadows and ofcourse Fix You.

Top 5: White Shadows, Square One, Fix You, Low, The Hardest Part

1. Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends

I love how all the songs fits together. I love listening to this as a whole album and not just songs.

Top Five songs: Violet Hill (made me fall in love with coldplay at first listen), Cemeteries of London, Life in technicolor, Yes, Strawberry Sing

Weakest songs: None, really.

1. A Rush Of Blood to the head

It had to be a tie between this and Viva. This is an amazing album.

Top five songs: God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, Warning Sign, Politik, Clocks, A Rush Of Blood to the head

Weakest songs: The Scientist. I don't like it at the moment. It depresses me too much.

2. Parachutes

Great, great, great! Coldplays early sound is outstanding.

Top Five songs: Shiver, Yellow, Everything's not lost, Spies, Don't Panic

Weakest songs: Parachutes. It's a good songs, but it's just too short. 25 seconds more would add the last touch.

3. X&Y

Weakest album. It took time for me to be used to this sound. I like it, but a part of Coldplay is missing.

Top Five Songs: Talk, Fix You, X&Y, Low, Square One

Weakest songs: The Hardest Part, A Message, What If

1) A Rush of Blood To The Head

Maybe i know few about music, maybe im too young for saying this, but whateeever.. this is the best fucking album ever!! and it's the sound that most perfectly fits to coldplay, those pianos, those melodies... i want another LP like AROOBTTH!:bigcry: almost all the songs are hits.

Top five songs - Amsterdam, Politik, In My Place, Daylight, GPASUYF

The not so great - The Scientist is my least favourite here, it gets a bit boring at the end (too long.)

Lyric - The last one:P : you came along and you cut me loose.

2) Parachutes

But Viva is very close to it. I love that naive sound, that lonely guitars and all the beautifulness they spread along the LP. A classic"

Top 5 - Sparks, Everything's Not Lost, Yellow, Spies, Live is For Living

Not so great - Maybe High Speed

Lyric - And i promise you girl, i always look out for you. Yeah, that's what i do.

3) Viva La Vida

Veeery good album! The style change was a risky thing to do, but they did succeed! Violet Hill is an anthem, none of the songs is a dissapointment, and there's a bit of everything. Love that low voice by Chris in Yes, but i do miss some falsetto here. The most colorful one (see LIJ, LiT)

Top five songs - Violet Hill, Lovers in Japan, Yes, Cemeteries of London, Lost!

The not so great - Reign of Love, strange pick for an LP.

Lyric - Just because im losing, it doesnt mean im lost.

4) X&Y.

I love fix you and talk, but here the point is overproduction. They wanted to rule the world, but all that overlayered synths didn't help at all. I miss those acoustics that Coldplay master. Still i think it's a good album.

Top five songs - Fix You, Talk, Square one, Til Kingdom Come, White Shadows

The not so great - The Hardest Part (is coldplay a pop music group¿)

Lyric - And i could write a song a hundred miles long (or sth like this )

that's it.

1. A rush of blood to the head

Mainly because it has the most of my favourite songs of their career on it.

(In my place, the scientist, warning sign, arobtth, amsterdam)

2. Parachutes

Its raw, not over fancy in any way, and their only just beginning!

(we never change, trouble, yellow, shiver, everythings not lost)

3. viva la vida or death and all his friends

brave move to change the sound like that, but it worked.

(strawberry fields, 42, lovers in japan, lost, cemetries of london)

4. x & y

love the 'jonny moments' on the album, some good tracks, just not my fave.

(speed of sound, talk, square one, white shadows)

It is very hard to put the albums in a specific order because they are much better than most of the albums of other musicians in my collection.

1. Parachutes

Last year I became a fan of Coldplay by listening to this album. For me it's their best album because all songs have a certain quality. The songs are emotional but not cheesy. Chris sounds so vulnerable and the instruments get so well with each other, Don't panic is a perfect example for it.

It is the only album of them I can dream with, it can put me into another state of mind, it gives me chills.

Top 5 Songs: Don't Panic, High Speed, Trouble, Spies, Shiver (no specific order)

2. Viva la vida or death and all his friends

Was hard to choose between AROBTTH and this one for the second place, but I think VLVODAAHF is much more an entity - just a complete album with great different songs on it. I like every track on this album so I put this on the second place. It has a certain strength, it sounds so enthuastic and I can feel the revolutionary thoughts that Chris and Co. had in their head while making this album.

Top 5 Songs: Death and all his friends, Lovers in japan, Lost, Violet hill, Life in technicolor

3. A rush of blood to the head

For critics it is probably their best album. And they are right it is a great profound album, with a lot of top songs it it and the lyrics are amazing. I could not build up such a great connection to this album. VLVODAAHF is a bit better to me because it seems like every song is about the same album-topic, so it does not sound like all the tracks are just diced together. On AROBTTH this is the case and I don't like some tracks on it. But these are the only negatives things about this album. Some songs are gorgeous and much better than the most on VLVODAAHF.

Top 5 Songs: Politik, Amsterdam, The Scientist, Clocks, AROBTTH

4. X & Y

Last but not least X & Y, also the last I album I bought. Most of the songs sound great if I listen to them superficially, I love to listen to it in the car. The lyrics are ok, although they were better in the past. A plus is also that there are a lot of tracks on the album, but it is like Chris said it is better to have less songs with a certain quality. I unfortunately have to add that the sound of is so equal on every track, kind of overproduced and Chris sings too high on most of the tracks. Sometimes the melodies are too simple. There is also no song that I would put on my alltime favorite list. It seems like CP was trying so hard that they forgot about their old principles. Nevertheless it is still a great album, much better then a lot of albums I have from other artists.

Top 5 Songs: Speed of sound, What if , The hardest part, A message, Square one

same order as me :cheesy:

TO ALL THOSE WHO DID NOT PUT A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD ON THE FIRST OR SECOND PLACE:

LOSERS! :p YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR, YOU MIGHT NEED TO GET YOUR EARS FIXED!!! :p

JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING :D

I also think this goes to show how coldplay doesn't realize how much fans (especially me) love amsterdam and how it should be played in every show...

OMG, finally someone who agrees with me :laugh3::D i'm still hoping for that one day where I can hear Amsterdam performed live!

Well first off I'll say I became a fan in the AROBTTH era, and was semi-aware of them in their Parachutes days (great listings everyone, love reading them).

1. Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends

Why? Because every song just sounds amazing to me, its one of those albums, where every song is just great to listen to. Some of the songs aren't as lyrically brilliant, nor as memorable, but the whole album as a whole gels so well, and not one song seems out of place. The new direction of Coldplay is not what I was expecting, and I loved how it took me by suprise. I truly truly hope their next album isn't a let down (its Coldplay, I'm sure it won't be! :D)

Top Songs: Lovers in Japan, Strawberry Swing, Life in Technicolor, Violet Hill, Viva La Vida

Questionable Songs: Reign of Love, Yes

2. X&Y

Why? It was a tough choice between this and AROBTTH, but I had to choose X&Y. The songs are catchy, it has a nice feel to it, and lyrically some of the songs have such meaning to me I find myself listening to them again and again. They always say it should have been shorter, and I agree, but why it ranks so highly is that when I go back to the album I can't figure out which song I'd take off!

Top songs: White Shadows, Fix You, A Message, The Hardest Part

Questionable: X&Y, Til' Kingdom Come

3. A Rush Of Blood To The Head

Why? Every song is stunning, not one song I can say is questionable, not one I can put on the questionable list, and its still ranked 3rd . This is mainly because even though every song is amazing, there isn't any that stand out in the crowd for me, possibly The Scientist, but the fact is they are all so so good, but there aren't any incredibles on there for me. Not one song from AROBTTH would make it into my top 5 Coldplay songs. In my top 20, probably 7 or 8 would be in there. You can tell every song is from this album, theres not one I think "ooh this could be on Parachutes". And that is a good thing and a bad thing.

Top songs: The Scientist, Politik, In My Place, Clocks

Questionable: None

4. Parachutes

Why? Overall it has some of my favourite songs on, but there are a few songs I absolutely hate, and cannot stand listening to basically, and thats why it ranks the lowest. It was a good first album for Coldplay, it wasn't incredible, some incredible songs, some good, some mediocre, some ugh.

Top songs: Yellow, Trouble, Don't Panic, GPASUYF

Questionable: Sparks, Parachutes, We Never Change

Why? Because every song just sounds amazing to me, its one of those albums, where every song is just great to listen to. Some of the songs aren't as lyrically brilliant, nor as memorable, but the whole album as a whole gels so well, and not one song seems out of place.

I think VLV gels the least of any of the albums. I think it's a collection of great singles without much cohesion. AROBTTH is the most well-produced and cohesive of the albums.

4. Parachutes

God Put a Smile is on AROBBTH, you noob! :P

hands down for me

the number one spot would have to go to

thlk_coldplay.jpg

1) A rush of blood to the Head: because of personal reasons this album will forever be in first place. i also love how dark and sad the lyrics were:( and how the piano control most of the album. i really don't think they will ever be able to make an album better then this.

my top 5 song in order Amsterdam, WARNING sign, God put a smile upon your face, POlitik and in my place..

favorite line: ALL of Amsterdam lol :D

thcoldplay.jpg

2)Parachutes: because its the first album and this is what made me into the annoying girl who loves coldplay lol :D:dozey: its true i drive people crazy with my love of coldplay.. lol.... but this album whole was full of strong songs and it was different. i never heard an album like that before and i love how the guitar was the main forces in the album.

my top 5 songs in order: Trouble, Shiver, Spies, HIgh speed and Everything is Not lost

favorite line:

Oh no, I see,

A spider web is tangled up with me,

And I lost my head,

The thought of all the stupid things I said,

Oh no whats this?

A spider web, and Im caught in the middle,

So I turned to run,

The thought of all the stupid things Ive done,

coldplayxandy.jpg

3) x and y: i'll never understand why this album made people feel coldplay sold out.... there are a lot of good songs but with this album there were really good song and then there were song that didn't so nothing for you it was so plain.. it lack the coldplay taste. there were a lot of unnecessary guitar solos lol...

but i still have my 5 top songs: A Message, the hardest part, X AND Y, Fix you and Square ONe

favorite line:

And I tried to sing

But I couldn't think of anything

That was the hardest part

thcoldplay-viva-cover.jpg

4) Viva la Vida: its a love and hate thing really, this album helped them become rich, and really famous. its not the coldplay im use to and its hard to find a connection. i love the album but maybe because its so different and new. im finding it hard to select a song to go on repeat mood.

my top 5 song: 42, Life In Technicolor,Lovers In Japan / Reign Of Love,Death And All His Friends, and Cemeteries Of London

favorite line:

And in the End

we lie awake and we dream of making our escape

Someone with the same order as me!:cheesy:

TO ALL THOSE WHO DID NOT PUT A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD ON THE FIRST OR SECOND PLACE:

LOSERS! :p YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR, YOU MIGHT NEED TO GET YOUR EARS FIXED!!! :p

JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING :D

:laugh3::laugh3:.

you're absolutely right!

God Put a Smile is on AROBBTH, you noob! :P

LOL, put it on the wrong one my bad :laugh4: :goofy:.

1. A Rush of Blood to the Head....It's just straight up brilliant. Every song is so beautifully written. The title track is probably one of my favorites along with the Scientist and Clocks.

2. Parachutes....I love this album and again the title track is amazing. It's so short, but so awesome. Everything's Not Lost is my favorite.

3. X&Y...I love this album, every track is a hit. Fix You is still a song I listen to daily. The title track is probably one of the best beginnings of any song I have heard.

4. Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends...I love every track on this album, and its such a new sound from what I'm used to hearing from Coldplay. Strawberry Swing is probably my favorite because it's so sweet. Lovers In Japan has an amazing beginning, Lost! and all 10 versions of it are great. Of course I'm addicted to the title track...

Coldplay is great at making their title tracks my favorite on all their albums.

1. VLV

2.X&Y = AROBTTH

3. PARACHUTES

ILL EXPLAIN WHY NEXTTIME

I think VLV gels the least of any of the albums. I think it's a collection of great singles without much cohesion. AROBTTH is the most well-produced and cohesive of the albums.

i totally disagree here. it has a totally logic flow, and if you listen carefully you'll hear upbeat song - downbeat song - upbeat song - downbeat song (or happy-sad) troughout the album. and it's ind of a story, like in prospekt's march, from life to death.

Edit- wait, never mind. I said "title tracks," but I was thinking about "opening tracks" for some crazy reason. Must have not been thinking straight. But since I mentioned it, Coldplay's opening tracks are always excellent. Don't Panic and Politik are among my top Coldplay songs.

1. A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD

[overall the best thing coldplay has ever done]

top songs: poltik,GPASUYF,clocks, scientist,in my place,AROBTTH,amsterdam, warning sign basically everything lol

bad song (only a whisper) they should have put "one i love"

2.VIVA LA VIDA

[i would have put this #1 if prospekts march came with it as a double album or if songs like glass of water,postcards and life in tech (vocals) had been on the original viva la vida cd}

top songs : violet hill ,viva, lovers, cemeteries

bad songs :reign of love escapist

3. Parachutes (could easily be #2)

[this cd has the most classic coldplay songs the only thing some of the bottoms songs are weak]

top songs:shiver, dont panic, yellow, everything not lost ,(and oh yea trouble)

bad song: we never change, high speed

4. X&Y

{most song here are random and not that good but it has some gems)

top songs:talk,fix you,speed of sound,white shadows

bad song :twisted logic, and then every other song is medicore coldplay

bad song :twisted logic, and then every other song is medicore coldplay

I wouldn't call them that... What's wrong with Square One?

So am I correct that judging by these lists most people became coldplay fans during X&Y-VIVA era?

Not I, said me. I became a casual fan right after they released Parachutes, but didn't actually buy Parachutes until A Rush of Blood to the Head came out. Then, I became a true fan.

And I consider 30 to still be young. :D

I just think that Coldplay keeps on getting better and better as they churn out albums. But, that's just my opinion.

I also think this goes to show how coldplay doesn't realize how much fans (especially me) love amsterdam and how it should be played in every show...

.

I totally agree with you! Amsterdam is one of my all-time favorite Coldplay songs!!!
