2-Aug-2009: Coldplay Headlining All Points West Music & Arts Festival, New Jersey

Featured Replies

This was a very educational experience for me. Things learned:

1) I fucking HATE rain&mud.

2) Festivals are NOT my thing.

3) Rain boots can be lifesavers:lol:

4) People can be assholes in the pit

5) I will go through ANYTHING to see Coldplay

6) Will Champion's smile can cure any aches/pains/bad moods:D

So I had to go into NYC to meet up with Sarah(SwallowedinSea) and Denise(Iriden) and their sibling/friends, and I got totally soaked just walking 1 block. (Cooky is already wet&cranky and only just started out!) One my way though, I had a small miracle happen when I was able to buy one of the last 2pairs of rain boots in the store:dance:(and on sale!). I thought I'd feel stupid wearing them, but OHMAGAWD were they absolutely necessary once we got to LibertyStPark! I also picked up some glow sticks:wacky: and bright paper to make signs....

We made it to LibertySTPark by 2ish, and then had to wait for HRS&HRS right outside the entrance, in the pouring rain:dozey:. Our ponchos all looked lovely, btw:P. Just walking from train station to that spot, our feet were totally covered in mud:sick: So they tell us that a big storm w/ "60miles/hr wind is on its way, and they can't let us in because it could be dangerous with the lightning. But there's no problem if we stand outside the gates&wait, in the same open area where we could just as likely get struck by lightning:rolleyes:. I think Sarah was right when she commented that they probably don't wanna get sued if someone walks in and gets struck by lightning once you crossed the gates.:dozey:

After a hr or so, it stopped raining, and the sky cleared up. We could actually see the sky and sun after a while:stunned::D. I had to borrow Sarah's sunglasses! But still they made us wait for about 2hrs until finally letting us in to the mud pit that was APW. (That was totally fucked up and really disorganized, we never saw lighting or thunder, just rain, that whole time). Sarah&Denise&I headed directly to the main stage where Silversun Pickups was already playing. We slowly made our way closer&closer to the front through the gigantic puddles of mud no one wanted to stand in:lol:. By the time Elbow came on( FANfuckingTASTIC btw ) we were up to the barrier that separated us "normal people" from the VIP pit. So we weren't really front row due to that, but as front as we could get on Guy's side(Jonny's side didn't have that reserved aread for VIPs, but I'm sure we wouldn't have been able to get anywhere close to front if we tried going in that direction)

As we waited, and "enjoyed" Echo&theBunnymen:rolleyes:(the singer was totally outta his mind on something, he practically stopped singing to yell at a roadie at one point, while wearing a winter overcoat:thinking:) I put Denise and Sarah to work making signs:whip::P A "Warning Sign" one, and a "Happy belated Birthday Will" sign. Christa and Erica(halokiti) didn't arrive until around 6ish/7, but I told them to make their way to the front, and started waving the signs so the could find us. Unfortunately, they only made it up to just a few people behind us:(. This one total asshole buttfaced jerk:angry: was like "oh no, noooo way," when we were like "can she pls squeeze in and join us?" (Christa is like barely 5ft tiny little thing, he wouldn't even have noticed if she was in front of him!:dozey:) This totally pissed me off, and kinda ruined my mood, 'cause I really really wanted the other girls with us, in particular Christa:nice:. Watching Coldplay with other coldplayers, who are dear friends, is THE BEST, and when you can't....:bigcry: It's just not the same.

Ok so we have our signs ready, I pass around the glow sticks to Sarah&Denise and some nice people around us:)(just 'cause there was that one asshole, doesn't mean I gotta be one too--spread some good karma;))and get the camera ready. SQUEEEEE. (It was so funny when Sarah&Denise&I started screaming and jumping when we heard U2&JayZ--people were probably like WTF:inquisitive:.) Then...it's ON, baby! Hearing LiT come on I still get those "ohmyGodit'sColdplay:shocked2:" chills:wacky:. They were just great great GREAT, so much energy, all smiles the whole night! I missed hearing GoW & CoL, and for me the show just flew by!!!:( I couldn't see too well in the beginning, 'cause for the first few songs everyone in the VIP pit were just holding up their cameras, so I couldn't see shit:dozey:, but after a while it seems they calmed down a bit and started to just enjoy the show. I can't judge how the crowd was, but it seems like most were enjoying themselves--though not quite as much as us cpers:lol: jumping and yelling and arms(and glow sticks) in the air--but it's not the same as being at a Coldplay show, where everyone is a fan and the Viva chants just start up spontaneously...but oh well.

I tried holding the Will sign during IMP, and I'm sure I caught Chris trying to read it--I figured if Chris sees it, maybe he'll go at the end of the show and tell him "hey some crazy girl wishes you a happy bday":P. But when they did the bow after DAALHF, Denise had the sign and I was like HOLD IT UP, NOW!!!!!:whip: and he totally saw it:D:dance: and had the best smile!!!! That totally made my night:wacky: It totally erased the exhaustion from standing all day in the mud:sick:, and the disappointment of Christa&Erica getting so close to us butnot being able to quite reach us:cry: So yeay for Will:heart::D<fangirl>

Politik, The Scientist, and the butterflies during LiJ gave me chills.:D The Beastie Boy cover was sooo...Chris. It was sweet, and kinda corny in it's mellow piano version, but great! Jonny was awesome, totally rockin' all night!:guitarist: during VH & 42 I all of a sudden become a total fangirl and squeee like crazy:wacko:. Guy was very smiley--AND YES CHRISTA, Guy does smile:P. I know everyone complains about Chris's hair, and yes in the beginning it's all pouffy and starting to get like scary late-Twisted Logic tour heights:stunned:, but when he gets all sweaty&really curly he looks totally adorable! Ok, as for none fangirly opinion--he was fanfuckingtastic, sounded great:D and I loved him acknowledging our long wait in the mud to see them. And Will....well he was kicking drum's ass as usual:drummer:(and I won't go on, I'll save my fangirly-ness for the Will thread )

Overall...it was quite the experience:rolleyes:. Don't think I'd repeat it again(but then I always say things like this, and then a show comes up and I just can't say no:P). I much rather just go to a Coldplay only show, though, I never ever have had problems w/ people's attitudes there. Coldplay fans are the best:smug: The guys were awesome, as always, no matter the venue, time, place. Their music is like magic---I'd had a migraine for days before this, crappy mood due to the long day, but they come on and it's totally erased.:D Only bad thing was not being together with all my friends, but there'll be more shows in the future....:D

Then Strawberry Swing came on and i lost it,, wanting to be with Cooky i was crying again, covered in mud ,sweat and tears i can truly say i have never been more pathetic looking

Thankies!heheheehehe , i was a nasty looking woman yesterday, i forbid cooky to post a pic of me:laugh3:

I called Joe during SS, so I was thinking of you somewhere back there:cry:, with Joe on the phone, trying to share the experience...the first time I've heard this song and been sad, instead of uplifted:\--though it sounded great and I did enjoy seeing Guy on the drums:wink3:

And really, we all looked like crap...but you looked so cute with your curly hair:nice:, you were like Chrissy's twin!:D

All I can say is that it was a great experience to live with the other girls in the mud of the festival, we survived :wacky:

YES, we did!!!

It was so nice meeting you:nice:....and your Will karma continues, since he saw the sign while you were holding it!!! (and sorry if I got all bossy on you to MAKE THE SIGN & HOLD IT UP!!!! Coldplay brings it out in me!) Enjoy the rest of your Coldplay shows in the US! See you at Wembley!

Glad to see some folks that went got pics and video. I am too short for that :-( Now I can say I'll go through anything for Coldplay, which in this case would be standing in fetid mud. At work, very tired. Sarah, me and her sister and bf ended up taking the 1:37am train back home. Good thing we made it, the next train would have been 3:07am.

Aww you guys didn't take the 1:42 train!?!:wacky: Glad you guys made it home safe!

I was standing right under the butterfly confetti guns when they went off during Lovers in Japan. Here is a video of the confetti coming down on us. Since the audio on my camera isn't that good, I put the actual track under it and matched up whet they were playing with that point in the song. Really cool to be under there. Also, I have a few links to some pics as well

To be honest this wasn't my favorite show, but it of course can't totally suck when it's Coldplay! I'm going through some sad emotions right now from having to write that review&relive it.<withdrawal symptoms>

Cooky you wrapped it up!!i can never do a review after you becuase mine just looks lame  awesome!!

What? Your's was great--captured it all in a concise manner! and not super long like mine:rolleyes::embarassed:

Cooky again that was totally awesome that you called me! I got so excited when I heard the phone ring, hehe! Your the best:kiss:

[...] you can't see Sarah, cute as she is, but vertically challenged.

Yellow was a blast but the friggin balloons were covered in god knows what and mud went everywhere, in crevices of my camera, in my ears, in my eyes. Then Strawberry Swing came on and i lost it,, wanting to be with Cooky i was crying again, covered in mud ,sweat and tears i can truly say i have never been more pathetic looking and i am sure Chris was not looking at me ;), but i was where i am most comfortable, in a sundress at a gig and this is what i live for and i was happy. Knowing damn well anyone here would trade places with me in and instant and realizing how fucking lucky i am. but this just might be my last festival because at one point i wanted to jump up and down but my boots had sunk into the mud and i was literally stuck, someone had to help me so i would not fall over. my feet were not off the ground.

When Chris did the Beastie Boys cover - YGTFFYRTParty, i was like holy shit flashback!!! reliving the good old days when MTV had great vids - [...]

When i hear Death its always bittersweet because you know the show is ending, beautiful just beautiful, [...]

I have to say the big screens were amazing showing the boys against the NYC night sky line, stunning.

oh yeah, FANFUCKINGTASTIC

Christa - I love your review!!!!!

"vertically challenged" made me laugh.

At the Snow Patrol concert a girl said "well, us Oompa Loompas HAVE to be front row to see anything"

To the mud-everywhere-part: It's such a great feeling when you think for one moment "Oh, I must be looking terrible" and then the next thought is "Who cares, I'm at a Coldplay concert and having fun"...

Now I am the one getting withdrawl symptoms :bigcry:

"my feet were not off the ground" - Loved that!!

And yes, there WERE days when MTV actually played videos... I can vaguely remember

Concerts really fly by, don't they?

Like you said - it's bittersweet when you suddenly realise it's going to be over soon!

And the skyline in the background must have been awesome to see.

One day I'll make it across the pond and see it for myself!!

This was a very educational experience for me. Things learned:

Thanks for your review!

Together with the smileys it looks like a piece of art

I agree about Coldplay fans being the best!!

I was so surprised that nobody complained that Ian, Kelly, me et al spent such a long time in the pub before the War Child gig and all of us went to the toilet etc and we could go back to our place in line afterwards.

Never really experienced pushing or similar "bad" behaviour during a concert...

omg cooky, Steph text me during the show and asked about my tweet re: somebody looks like a clown and was it me or chris? omfg i laughed so hard. maybe he will look at me because we loook sooooooooooooooooooo much alike:rolleyes:;)

The whole thing sounds like a smaller Glastonbury

cooky has a good theme going

festivals are for

The very young and the very drunk

Never underestimate your bladder or a good pair of shoes - they will both bring you down at some point

don't ever leave your spot unless you

make friends who you are next to you

drink water but not too much.

New Jersey does smell - why would you think a landfill would not smell after a foot of rain in one day and 70, 000 wackos are walking on it?

dont forget sun block

dont loose your friends or your cell phone

wear something with pockets.

my first festival was 20 years ago and i am still learning

Great list...I used to go to those huge festival concerts way back in the hairband 80s - think Journey, Rolling Stones, Live Aid, with many lesser bands, that would last all day, at huge venues like the LA Coliseum and the Rose Bowl. Now, I just don't want to deal with that (but I am NOT old, lol), and I don't want to deal with drunk and/or stoned people. One of the reasons I don't really want to see U2 at the Rose Bowl, too freaking big. The pit at a normal concert is different, though. At least, Coldplay-only crowds are more civilized, it sounds like.

haha i saw that warning sign sign! i was on the other side and thought it's probably someone from here.

i had so much fun despite all the mud, and the terrible terrible smell!!! I wish I could see them everyday, SO GOOD. lol at "mud sauna" ahhhhh i love them so effing much!!!!!!!!!

Though I must admit that I hate festivals! It was my 1st one, and if it weren't for Coldplay i wouldn't go.

Did anyone notice Jonny's brother in the VIP section during echo and the bunnyman? idk if jonny has a brother but he MUST have one because there was this guy who looked exactly like him! i looked at hm WAY too many times, he was probably wtf-ing at me lol

edit:

forgot to mention i was in teh 3rd row from the stage almost in the center! some tall dudes were in front of me so my view wasn't as clear as i wanted it to be, but still i could see chris' sweat dripping off his face, and i had a great view of jonny, will was kind of far away as the stage was pretty high off the ground, and guy was so far away from me:( but all in all great night, despite the horrible muddy conditions.

Pictures and a review of sorts are coming tomorrow. I just had a 12 hour day of work after running on 4 hours of sleep, so I'm just a little bit exhausted. :P But the show was fantastic, despite all the mud!

Glad you saw our "Warning Sign," Asia! Didn't see any Jonny look-a-likes, but then again I wasn't looking too closely at the VIP section, I was too busy wishing that it wouldn't fill up for Coldplay. :P

omg cooky, Steph text me during the show and asked about my tweet re: somebody looks like a clown and was it me or chris? omfg i laughed so hard. maybe he will look at me because we loook sooooooooooooooooooo much alike:rolleyes:;)

I was 98% sure you were referring to Chris, 2% regarding yourself.

Jonny has a brother named Tim, he's the guitarist in The Domino State.
