I'm an architect and I guess I was lucky, I'm a very visual person so I always knew that I wanted to do something that involved creativity at some point. Painting felt like a hobbie so I never saw it as a possible career, and my options were always either graphic design or architecture.... I'm glad I chose the latter :nice:

I've been on the search for a masters degree for a couple of years now, and even though at first I was very drawn to urban planning it envolves so much theory and laws, that I instantly knew that was not what I wanted. I'm still interested in it though, so I'm gonna go for Landscape Architecture with a twist on planning :nice: I'm not thrilled with the idea of going back to school and even less with the posibility of owing a bunch of money to the bank in order to pay for my masters :sick: but things are difficult right now, there's tons of unemployed architects around and if you don't have something in particular to offer then you're just one more of the bunch... So to me, this is gonna be hard, but it is not optional.

I think you can find them online, but they aren't all the same. Some are relatively generic and just tell you what type of field you would do best, whereas others get very specific with a list of careers.

 

When I went to my university, I thought I knew "what I wanted to be when I grow up". I was thinking along the lines of forensic pathologist. (I know, eeeeewww.) When taking the "placement" tests to see which classes to start me at (for math, chemistry, literature, etc.), I was VERY upset with the results of the math placement. I had taken Calcululs I, II and III in high school; but, the highest math they tested on the placement exam was Trig. I was ticked. The last time I had Trig was 4 years before that, so I didn't remember much of it. And since there was no calculus on it, I had no way of "proving" to them that I already knew how to do it. Needless to say, they basically placed me in a pre-calculus class, and there was no way for me to get around it. After realizing that I didn't really want to be a forensic pathologist, I left my major as "undecided" for 2 years. Then, I finally went to the Career Center at the university, and they offered me a Strong Interest Inventory Test. It was one of the best things I've ever done. You have to be honest when taking it though, otherwise it won't work. Don't answer the questions the way you think other people would want you to answer them, just answer them truthfully. As it turns out, the best career for me was something that the university already had as a degree... actuary (Actuarial Mathematics). So even though I was frustrated with where they originally placed me in math classes, the point is I really do love math, so I went though the program. I got hired at an actuarial firm during my last semester at the university, and I've worked there ever since (over 7 years). I love what I do.

 

SO, long story short... it can't hurt to take one of those tests. If you do, just make sure it's one of the more specific/detailed ones.

After uni, I'mma try to get a job somewhere. Supposedly school districts need people like us. Ionno. :P

I suppose start working towards a PH.D in something related to major, then go teach at some high-school or small college, devote time to conferences and writing on esoteric topics despite my inability to get published as a distraction from my dwindling love life until I make tenure and spent the rest of my days teaching, playing online chess from my too-large house and attending the local curling club on sunday nights. (that was largely a satire on my brother and his philosophy professor friend, both of whom I seem predestined to imitate in life. :P)
