Turkish girl, 16, 'buried alive by her father because she had friendships with boys'

A 16-year-old Turkish girl was buried alive under a chicken coop by relatives because she talked to boys.

The body of Medine Memi was found in a sitting position with her hands tied in a 6ft hole dug in the courtyard of her family's home in Kahta, south-eastern Turkey, 40 days after she had been reported missing. The hole had been cemented over.

The teenager had a large amount of soil in her lungs and stomach - showing she suffered a slow and agonising death.

'The autopsy result is blood-curdling. According to our findings, the girl – who had no bruises on her body and no sign of narcotics or poison in her blood – was alive and fully conscious when she was buried,' said a forensics expert.

Suspicion that her death had been especially brutal led to the commissioning of a report by university scientists after the original post-mortem examination.

Medine Meme's father and grandfather have now been arrested and jailed awaiting trial. The girl's mother was arrested, but later released.

It has emerged that the girl had made a complaint to police about her grandfather two months before she went missing, saying that he beat her because she talked to boys.

In addition her father Ayhan is said to have told relatives that he was unhappy that his daughter - one of nine children - had male friends.

Police made the grisly discovery in December following a tip-off from an informant.

After Medine's body was found in December, her mother Immihan said: 'She tried to take refuge at the police station three times, and she was sent home three times.'

The case has caused outrage in Turkey and reopened the debate over so-called honour killings which are particularly prevalent in the predominantly Kurdish south-east of the country.

Such killings are usually decided by a council of relatives which consist of the elders of the family.

Official figures state there are more than 200 such killings a year, around half of all murders in Turkey.

One commentator wrote on the website of a religious TV station: 'The punishment for whosoever should kill with intent is the hell where he will languish forever. Allah has cursed him and prepared great pain for him

'You named your daughter after the holy city of Medina but your mind is left over from the earlier Age of Ignorance.'

1. Not funny, pickle.

2. What the fuck is the point of posting this Mark? Is this the biggest or most relevant news in the world today? What the fuck is wrong with your sick little mind to want to share this with other people? Just ammunition for your retarded racist comments?

Like other news items such as a girl being sentenced to a number of lashes in Saudi Arabia, or homosexuals legally punished by execution, I don't really see how this is supposed to start any sort of discussion other then us just sitting here going "That is horrifically terribly brutally awfully disgustingly insanely ridiculously BAD".

I know I bring up the Daily Mail too much when it comes to this, but it's such a common trait how much the Mail readers love to victimise and persecute, stories like this they can sit around the coffee table with family members, having a field day.

I think it's so stupid how stupid people can be. :shame: That poor girl, who in their right mind would do that to their own child??

And why wouldn't the police help her? That's so....gah :disappointed:

Exactly. That's why these kinds of atrocities need to be publicised, to show how screwed up some people are out there. The level of cruelty is almost unimaginable.

Unfortunately some people (e.g. Heatseeker) would rather bury their heads in the sand and pretend it isn't happening, which is very sad indeed.:dozey:

You can't blame the media. If people didn't commit such terrible atrocities, there wouldn't be anything to report............................. :dozey:

If you genuinely think that his position is to pretend it isn't happening, then you've completely missed the point. But I think you're just using that to dismiss a valid point.

I don't even know where to begin here, on how much you don't understand about what I was saying (Hint: It has nothing to do with the 'terrible atrocities').

PS Learn how to use the damn multi-quote function.

There wasn't anything valid from him whatsoever (as usual). Just his usual abusive comments and no attempt to actually discuss the topic at all. Therefore he deserves to be "dismissed".;)

This is a valid news story which is most definitely in the public interest, whether you choose to acknowledge it or not.

It is unbelievable that such things are happening in the 21st century.:dozey:

He asked what the point of posting it was, and I don't see any. My point was that this is just a way of you getting to sit back and use many negative terms as possibly to describe these people's actions (How difficult!).

There is nothing to discuss here, the only thing we can do is just write "Wow thats awful" - "OOoh what a shame" - "Hang them with their own stretched out foreskin".

Well if you'd rather pretend it's not happening, then fine.:dozey:

I still say it's a perfectly valid story, but feel free to ignore it if you so wish.

Ignore it, as opposed to, discuss it?

I read about this (Yesterday) on the Guardian online, yes, it's terrible, despicable, horrifying, etc. etc. Just like about 30 other news stories yesterday. And today.

But unless you are completely ignorant you would know that the world is a cruel place, and these things go on all the time, reported and un-reported. The point I'm making, is that you decide to post this story and stories like these, on an internet forum for us to discuss it, when there's clearly no discussing to do. All we can do is point fingers and tut at the bad men, and even feel a little bit better about ourselves.

This has nothing to do with me pretending it's not happening or Heatseeker burying his head in the sand, you are just using that to get away from Heatseekers question, what was the point of posting this? How were we actually supposed to discuss it? What is really left to be said?

OMG Mark you are legit the most retarded person on this forum. Not even I believe you are truly stupid enough to think that's my real position on this. You are putting those words in my mouth to avoid answering my question, which is childish and quite pathetic, but if you legit believe I am "burying my head in the sand" then I strongly pity you and your non-functioning brain.

You just proved my point by continuing to be unnecessarily and childishly abusive. So congrats.
