My Official Stance on Coldplay

My Official Stance on Coldplay

Hello Coldplayers, I am making this post after some of the conversations I’ve been involved with over the past few days. There are a few things I would like to state on my stance on Coldplay, and there are also a few things that I would like to tell some people on here.

I became a Coldplay fan in 2003 after A Rush of Blood to the Head. It was the Live 2003 show that sucked me in. They were showing it on CBC one night when I was extremely sick, so I watched it, recorded it, and loved it. When I was healthy enough to go to the store, I bought it. When X&Y came out, me and about 10 other students skipped out on grade 11 physics to go buy X&Y (or whatever other albums came out that day). It was an exciting experience. I was pretty obsessed with Coldplay in high school in the sense that I bought all their albums, downloaded all their b-sides, instrumental albums, acoustic songs, made dvds of live shows, music videos, acoustic sessions, etc. They were never my favourite band, but they were pretty special to me. After X&Y I just started to lose interest. By the time Viva came out Coldplay had moved down my favourite bands list quite a bit. Viva disappointed me. I don’t think its a horrible album or anything, I just never connected with it. It seemed like they were trying to hard to be awesome but losing the elements that made them awesome. I was glad they didn’t put out a safe album full of Clocks and the Scientist, but still wish I could have connected with the songs more.

I have definitely expressed my dissatisfaction on this website. I also have taken many opportunities to state that Radiohead are my favourite band and I prefer them to Coldplay for sure. I’ve also had many conversations with Coldplayers regarding Bono and U2. The two incidents in particular are when he called Chris Martin a ******, and in the World of Music section the thread regarding U2 having to pull out of Glastonbury. In all of these heated discussions, I was overwhelmed by the closed mindedness of a lot of people on this forum. People have made multiple personal attacks on both Bono and Thom Yorke and find it necessary to try to prove that Coldplay are bigger than U2 or that they are better than Radiohead. It has brought out the ugly side of many people. I’ve also been personally targeted by name callers and people who think they can intimidate me by insulting me. Unfortunately it did not work as they have left the forum and I have not.

So my point is, I’m not a Coldplay hater. And I think its pathetic that so many people on here get so up in arms as soon as anything criticizing Coldplay is said. It is not healthy to just listen to one band, or a small handful of bands and ignore all the wonderful music out there. There is more to life than Coldplay. And also it is OKAY to not like something by Coldplay. Its OKAY to say that you loved Parachutes but thought Viva wasn’t that good. You don’t have to go bonkers trying to convince people that Viva is a masterpiece and you’re wrong. You’re entitled to your own opinion. If everybody loved everything that Coldplay made and nobody criticized them, how would they be challenged to evolve as artists?

And another key point I would like to make: you don’t have to be the world’s biggest Coldplay fan to be part of this forum. People’s likes and dislikes change over time. When people join this site, chances are they do so because they like Coldplay. Sometimes people lose interest in things, including Coldplay. But they stay on the board because they have made friends, or like to chat in the lounge. Or in my case I am still here primarily to discuss other bands in the World of Music. Why don’t I just go join a U2 forum, or Radiohead forum? Well because I like talking about those bands with the people on this forum. They are my friends, so why would I want to leave?

I think people need to learn to respect other people’s opinions. Sure you may think Coldplay are the biggest band in the world, but there is no use in trying to tell me that or try to convince me of that. And so what, you don’t like Radiohead? Well that is no excuse to insult Thom Yorke and make fun of his lazy eye (the result of surgery as a child). If somebody thinks Coldplay is boring, well that is okay too.

Just try to keep a cool head, don’t jump to conclusions, don’t make things personal, and if you’re an overzealous Coldplay fangirl or fanboy get a life or figure out there is more to life than Coldplay.

And yes fools, I listened to coldplay while I wrote that.

Unfortunately, I think you'll get some spats over this one, or people trying to cover their asses and backpedal saying they're not like that

But a good post all the same! I doubt a large amount of the people that some others call haters are actually haters... it's a bit silly, really. Why on earth can't people who have lost interest in Coldplay stay on the board for their friends or other discussions? It seems silly.

I think a bunch of us are just silly and playfully poke at Coldplay, then people take it too seriously.

And you're right, people will try to cover their asses, but I've seen the ugly side of a lot of people on this forum and know who they are haha.

i agree with most of what you said actually

...except i think when it comes to the fanboys & girls you should just leave them be and live and let infatu--live because its just sillyness and theres no reason to get all bent out of shape over any of it

your disapproval wont change them anymore than their disapproval of Radiohead will stop you from liking thom yorke

so... yeah... thats all i have to say about that

There are lots of Coldplay fangirls that I'm friends with on here, who love Coldplay to shreds, but are respectful to others and I'm fine with that. Sure they'll think Coldplay is the biggest thing, but won't start acting irrational and vicious.

good post briggins.

I am similar to you in the sense that Coldplay was one of my favorite bands (if not my favorite at one point). I really got into them about 2-3 months before X&Y. I can't tell you how much i listened to that album. But after time of course I lost interest in the band (mainly because there was no new music), and I moved on to other newer/more active artists. They then came out with VLV, which I also found to be a huge disappointment. I even gave X&Y a listen again a few weeks after VLV and honestly I didn't find it that interesting anymore. I still consider myself a fan of the band, but I don't like them nearly as much as before. I came to this forum initially for the band, but also to get a chance to talk to other people about other music as well (like in the world of music area)

I feel that it is stupid and completely ignorant to think that someone hates the band because they don't like an album. Even my favorite bands (The Beatles, Radiohead, Pink Floyd) have songs/albums that I don't like... does this not make me a fan?... not at all. It'd be a bit ridiculous to love every single song just because you love the band.

Also I think that the whole biggest band argument is completely meaningless. For argument sake if Coldplay were "the biggest band" in the world what would that mean? I mean it's not as if they get a trophy or it will convince me to like songs/albums i don't care for. Even if you say more successful, to me it means nothing because I don't base what I listen to off of records or sales or how much money they make, but off of what I like.

I also think that although many may listen to Coldplay and love them, that it's also good to expand your horizons and listen to other music. Now I know that some may say how I always talk about Radiohead or mention them, and yes it is true that I do it quite a bit but that doesn't mean that they are the only band I listen to 24/7. There are so many other bands out there to listen to, and it's good to listen to other things because I feel that certain bands/albums I've listened to so many times that now I don't listen to them anymore (X&Y, The Who, etc).

I like Coldplay quite a bit. I've seen them live more than any other artist (5 times). I feel though that their last two albums are much weaker than their first two albums and that they have lost their way. I think that they have become too commercial and care more about the show rather than the music. That's just my opinion.

Briggins, you are my favorite person here. This post can explain exactly why.

Thanks for being honest, respectful, and loyal to all your friends on here.

Well done my friend.

Thom's lazy eye. Isn't that how we became friends? Someone dissed him and we both went in and were like, "hold up now!"

This is why I like Briggins.

This is a good post and really shows the truth about this board. More people should be as reasonable as you and not fight over different music tastes. :)

Good post Briggins! You already made your point pretty clear for me before but that was still interesting.

It looks like you even were a bigger coldplay fan than I am :surprised: :P!

It's a good thing that people like you stay in here actually. It would be so boring and annoying if everyone here were die hard Coldplay fans. Discussions and (respectful) arguments are what makes it interesting !

When I think about it, I would probably have had the same reaction as you toward Viva La Vida if I had discover Coldplay back in 2003. But VLV got me into Coldplay, it made me listen to their other stuff so I kinda discovered all at once. And even though I soon came to like their old stuff better too, VLV remains pretty special for me. Besides I first saw them for the Viva Tour (and enjoyed every minute of it).

I also agree on the fact that it's not healthy to listen to one band only (or even just a few).

You're right when you say that "people need to learn to respect other people’s opinions" and that it's pointless and stupid to try to convice people that Coldplay make the greatest music or are the biggest band. BUT, some people here also need to stop trying to convince people that Coldplay are shit ! Your advice must be taken by both sides. Actually I think I usually see more people insulting and being really harsh with Coldplay fangirls/boys than the contrary. Even if they have reasons to think those fangirls/boys say stupid things, there's no need to be that harsh. I mean what's the point? It's not going to change them anyway.

PS : excuse my bad english

where have you seen that? ...i havent

Uhm, I'm a massive fangirl and I consider myself pretty open minded and respectful. That goes for all the other Chris-girls I'm friends with as well. Just saying.

Oh, and I liked the post Briggins, good job!

PS : excuse my bad english
What? Bad English? Your post was perfect. It seems to me that you speak/write English better than a lot of people who have it as their first language... :D

First of all, your english is excellent.

And yes, I agree there are people on here who need to stop trying to convince people Coldplay are shit.

And I think the reason that fangirls/fanboys take so much heat and get insulted is because many, not all, are so narrow minded and diluted that its pathetic and humourous making them an easy target (speaking from experience).

And yes, there are lots of fangirls who are open minded and respectful and they are what keep this board going in a positive direction.

When I first joined this forum I used to be a proper obsessed fangirl and one of those people who was ready to shoot down anyone who had something bad to say about them. I'm not saying I'm still not a fangirl in some situations, I still get excited about new things to do with Coldplay and I still love talking about them, but my love for them seems to have diminished over the past couple of months.

But I think this is good because I transfered myself over to the lounge and I now take things more as a joke as I've come to know people here better. I really think that if people here weren't so funny and great I wouldn't stick around so much, especially recently. Also because of people here I've found out so much more music and are currently trying to expand my music taste :D

Fair enough for people like us reading this,

hey it's a fucking great post with so much truth in it

but we know this. I'm hoping the people who this post relates to actually read this.

Really? :o You guys just made my day !

Yeah I know !

MY stance -

Coldplay are the best band ever. ALL of their songs are amazing. A rush of blood is the best album of all time and forever. Impossible to beat. They are the best live band in the universe (even though not all bands in the universe can be witnessed coldplay win by default due to sheer brilliance).

Viva is their weakest album but still better than any other bands best material.

Radiohead are amazing but compared with coldplay are like a lightbulb to the sun. U2 are a candle. Snow patrol are a lit match.

Chris martin is a musical genius. The Viva demos are better than anything ever by anyone ever.

Coldplay is my favorite band. They always have been and hopefully will continue to be. That said, I get if people aren't as crazy about them as I am and if you like Radiohead or U2 more, then awesome. I like a couple songs by Radiohead, but I won't knock someone down for thinking they are better than Coldplay. I may not get why people get fired up by hearing Radiohead or U2, just like they may not understand why I get fired up over Coldplay, but as long as there is mutual respect between one another, then great. To each their own.
