May 12, 201214 yr Author I heard PBS got out the scissors to make the episode fit with the adverts. Naughty PBS :(

May 13, 201214 yr http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2143515/Sherlock-Holmes-mystery-U-S-viewers-TV-channel-cuts-minutes-fit-schedules.html Sherlock Holmes mystery for U.S. viewers as TV channel cuts eight minutes to fit its schedules Fans 'deprived' after scenes are axed for adverts It has joined the ranks of Doctor Who and Downton Abbey as one of British TV's most successful exports to America. But U.S. fans of Sherlock were left feeling a little short-changed after complaining that eight minutes of one episode has been mysteriously cut from the show. More than 3million viewers, double the prime-time audience average on the PBS network, tuned in this week to watch A Scandal In Belgravia, the episode featuring whip-smart dominatrix Irene Adler. However, some amateur sleuths noticed a missing piece in the puzzle when harking back to the same episode they had watched previously on British DVDs or on illicit downloads. It was elementary, some scenes from the 90-minute show had simply disappeared. One viewer complained on a Sherlock Tumblr blog: 'They cut scenes. Good ones. What the hell... that makes no sense. It's frustrating...' Another, writing on a web forum, said parts of the scene in Buckingham Palace had been snipped out as well as a shot in the taxi afterwards in which Sherlock shows Watson an ashtray he took, it was reported in The Independent. 'I think American audiences were deprived of seeing some of the humour that makes this series so clever, the viewer said. In a further indication of the hysteria surrounding the show, more than 10,000 fans recently applied for seats at a 400-capacity preview screening of A Scandal In Belgravia in New York. Some had travelled from as far as China and greeted Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch with screams normally associated with Justin Bieber. The new series has also topped the US iTunes television download chart. Sue Vertue, executive producer of Hartswood Films, admitted she was behind the editing because sponsors announcements mean episodes have to run for 82 minutes. However, no cuts involved scenes which courted controversy in the UK, such as when whip-cracking Adler appears naked. 'It breaks your heart,' She told The Independent. 'We try to cut the bits which aren't essential to the story, but they are often the lovely character scenes. 'We'll see if we can avoid next time.'
May 13, 201214 yr it's also stupid, why do they have to do it I know they probably need those adds but cutting scenes from a program with so many viewers :s
May 13, 201214 yr I was pretty pissed about the cuts. I don't blame Sue Vertue though, it's her baby and I know she must have hated doing it. Benedict was mad too when he saw that parts were cut, he said something along the lines of "you guys are as big fans as the people in the UK, why should you miss scenes?". PBS tried to shrug off the blame and said that it's Hartswood Films that are at fault, but my best guess is that PBS told Hartswood that they needed 8 minutes to be cut for adverts, and Hartswood contacted Sue who told them what to cut, and they did. Anyway, as long as it's in the DVD I'm okay since I know I'm going to buy it. It was worse for me than my family though; I had seen the full version of Scandal online and therefore knew exactly what scenes were missing. :shifty: And if you want to watch it you can go to here. So yeah. The Hounds of Baskerville tonight! Can't wait! Although I really don't know what they cut, and I'm kind of scared for it. D:
May 13, 201214 yr it's just really sad that they cut, yeah I hope they don't cut a lot today :uhoh: please not there in the end when you get all exited for TRF but it's like you said, can't blame Sue sorry for saying this but it has to get out YOU STUPID AMERICANS!!
May 13, 201214 yr It wasn't cut because of the ads, if it was on PBS, since it's public television. Still silly.
May 13, 201214 yr not to sound snobby, but I watched it on PBS last week and it was cut because of ads. The show is supposed to be 90 minutes, and PBS gave them a 90 minute time slot, but 8 minutes of it was advertisement/announcements. After the little recap of The Great Game, they kind of switched out of the show and spent about a minute on a stupid little intro (as if "Sherlock" needed explaining that it's about Sherlock Holmes...) followed by about 6 minutes of ads and 1 minute of PBS begging us for our money, before returning to Scandal.
