December 31, 201015 yr I have an opportunity to move to London for a year for work. I am seriously contemplating it, but coming from the U.S., fear it will be a huge culture shock. Having said that, I have family who are British and feel that it's a part of my heritage I'd like to connect with. I'm hoping some of the UK sludgers can give me some insight on what it's like to live in England :)
December 31, 201015 yr I don't live there, but I've been there a few times this year and I absolutely love it. A few people on here will be moving there soon. What part of the U.S. do you live in? I'm not sure it will really be much of a culture "shock", just a little different. A couple of things that took me by surprise is that the tipping rate is much lower over there, you're not supposed to tip bartenders, and public restrooms aren't free. :wtf:
December 31, 201015 yr London is my favorite place to visit. It's VERY expensive coming from the U.S. I would jump at the chance to move there for a year.

December 31, 201015 yr DO IT It's a lovely city... There's lots of stuff to do, to visit and I find people really nice. But it's very expensive for sure. Never had to pay an apartment or whatever, but just the food is like supeeer expensive. It may be hard the first months because you don't know anybody and the 'shock culture' but I think it can't be bad. I'm sure you'll enjoy it... I spend 3 months in a family and I visited a bunch of stuff... I just LOVED IT. What was the hardest for me was the food (hahaha). I think their food is terrible, but eh, I'm French so I guess it's just cause we're not used to eat the same things. Hm yeah, do it.

December 31, 201015 yr I don't think it's gonna me a culture shock but it depends on where you're from really. It might be a big change if you're from a small town. One of my friends moved to London recently and she found it difficult to make friends. She said people weren't as friendly as up north. Another friend who lived in London for three years said the same. You'd probably be able to make friends at work though so this might not be an issue.
December 31, 201015 yr Go go go go go! I've lived in England for 3 months and what can I say... I don't regret a minute of it. Seriously, if you have the opportunity, go and make the best of it. Considering you speak English, the shock will probably not be big, apart from the expensiveness of the city. You will get used to it eventually and find shops that sell cheaper food and clothing. Also, you will work there so the wage will probably not be too low. Write down the pros and cons and see what happens.
