Just based on that, I find this review to be somewhat questionable. Then he had to go make small comparisons to Arcade Fire and Sigur Rós. WAT. :|

Coldplay is a joke.

 

I joined the forum in excitement for LP5 and ETIAW, and it all just seems really wavering right now. I'm sure it'll be good, just not THAT good.

 

I keep forgetting that Paradise is part of this album too. And that it's representative of the overall sound. :|

 

yeah. I joined the forum for the WoM but was still a fan of the band.

 

Now I really can't even both with the band anymore.

 

I'll still listen to their first 2 albums (maybe part of X&Y), and a handful of songs after that, but that's about it.

I really want to listen to Charlie Brown.

 

And I still can't believe ETIAW and paradise are part of the album :disappointed:

I can't really trust that review either, what with what they say about ETIAW, Major Minus and Up In Flames. I'll give the album a listen by all means, I predict I will enjoy about half of it. We'll see.

You have to keep in mind the source of the review considering the fact that Q magazine seems to give at least 4 out of 5 stars to any release (Not to mention the fact that Q magazine was never a great source for music news).

 

It's funny how people just seemed to sweep aside the Spin review which only gave the album a 7 out of 10. At the very least, this will probably be better than X&Y, one of the worst albums I have ever listened to.

I'm still really looking forward to MX, it's actually a pretty versatile-sounding record.

 

 

Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall is my biggest guilty pleasure right now. Paradise still sucks though.

 

I've gotta admit after hearing the live version of paradise I'm enjoying it allot more, same with Every Teardrop, they're allot more poppy but still 1000 times better than anything in the charts.

Paradise is a whole lot better live (quite enjoyable) but Every Teardrop is like Speed of Sound - stale and and not at all interesting live. Chris also seems to really struggle singing it live at times. I don't think he has a voice like Bono for example to really rise above the lot of music/effects going on behind him and dominate it. That's why Lovers In Japan was never quite as good live as it was on record.

Paradise is dreadfully empty, even live. They could have done a lot with it but I feel like they chose not to, to create this simple, shallow song for a massive fanbase that can't perceive lyrical depth. Chris Martin is capable of writing good lyrics, I know it, but his choice to not write like that troubles me. We have about three more songs that could potentially contain some of the best lyrics. Even with the shallowness of Paradise and ETIAW, if they can make an album that extends out to a few more audiences than it already does, then Mylo Xyloto could potentially be one of, if not their greatest album to date.

I admit that when Speed of Sound was released I absolutely loved it. Those spacey keys really got me hooked but when I got X&Y it wore away pretty quickly.

 

Musically it could be their best to date but lyrically I can't see it. Although Hurts Like Heaven and Charlie Brown do more than enough to satisfy me lyrically.

The satisfactory, well-thought lyrics could lie in the songs we haven't heard yet. It's extremely versatile in every way, it could be their best album to date. Hurts Like Heaven has alright lyrics, Charlie Brown's ambition is what drives it though. I don't see a couple bad apples soiling the bunch, I wouldn't be surprised to legitimately find this in my top ten.

Lyrically the best song could be UWTB partially cause Cohen wrote part of the lyrics apparently.

I agree about Every Teardrop live, it did nothing for me live, but it's been growing on me on the record. I'm looking forward to hearing Us Against The World on the record, sounds like it's going to be quite different to the live version.

As a person who's not a fan of Bono's voice at all, I find your post to be very interesting. I'll only say that there are times (more so now than in the past) that Chris sounds absolutely terrible live.

I was just listening to swallowed in the sea yesterday and thinking how much I loved it. I won't judge you though because I dont like trouble or god put a smile upon your face.

I have such unpopular opinions on their songs. :p

 

The Scientist and Don't Panic used to do a lot for me, now they come off as lackluster.

i still think the scientist is their best song

SITS is a song that I really shouldn't like but I do anyway. It's cheesy as hell but it stands out as more fun than the rest of that really bland stretch of the album (Low, The Hardest Part, and Twisted Logic all do no favors for me). And it's way better than most songs post-X&Y. :lol:
