Will LP5 be Coldplay's last album?

Featured Replies

LP5 their last album? Heavens NO! I want at least two more albums and a sneak peek in the songs they have recorded but haven't published. :) I seriously don't know how I will go on when they stop. Chris should have a clone in future.

With LP5 they finish contract with EMI, but they have signed a contract with Universal Publishing for more albums. :)

I cant see it really. I mean there would be no point to just do 5 albums, after the success they have got. A band like that should never split up!!!!!!!! I predict they will make 15 more albums, okay sorry; I HOPE they make 15 more albums!!!

I'd love to see loads more, but honestly it's impossible to tell how long they'll last. I think they'll keep doing new things until they get to the stage that they jus can't be bothered (or when the public can't be bothered).

I would be extremely surprised if they made it to the double digits, considering the length of time it takes them to record an album...

5 in 12 years is far from productive :)

They will never stop making music. It's their hobby, their passion, it's their life. They don't do it for money, they do it because they LOVE it.

this!

and sure, maybe at some point they will stop releasing that music, but i think that point is still quite far in the future...

also, it's always a good idea to not take anything Chris says too seriously. :P

I doubt that they'll end anytime soon. Even though Chris may have said that, I seriously doubt they'll do that and I take things like that with a grain of salt.

so long as there's money to be made...

I still feel most bands shouldn't continue forever. Usually as bands get older their material is not as good when they first start.

They'll last a long time. I believe that they have the ability to become another U2 or Pink Floyd, or maybe even more, if luck is on their side.

They are all in pretty good shape. I could see them with another 5 in 12 which would put them in their mid 40's.

I am far from ready to stop hearing new material from them! I really don't know what I will do if they stop making their music. Such pieces have been my life companion for the last 11 years or so.

Ah come on!

Of course NOT!!!!!!!!!

They HAVE TO keep moving on til they see their goal. Well, if there's such a thing to them.

Anyway, they will be there for us :)

I saw by accident this morning an interview from 2010, in Boombox, where they said that they were writing a lot of songs for the future, like squirrels who gather a lot of nuts for the winter. and then they made fun of the interviewer who didn't really know what a squirrel was

So, that kinda answers your question.

 Well I should HOPE NOT!

I could see the guys making 10 albums, honestly, and maybe even more since, as someone else pointed out above me, they aren't making music for money but because it's just something they love to do! It's their passion, and I don't think they should stop just because they reach a certain age :)

They can continue making music as long as they are able, or want to.

I don't get when people ask this. When Chris makes those "old" comments he's almost always joking. A creative mind has to create and as long as all four of them are alive and well they'll go on as long as U2 have.

Even if they stop, Chris will write a lot more songs for other Artists.

Well I think they always keep writing to try to improve, they always say they want to try to make the best music possible and they don't feel they've done that yet so that keeps them going. And they'll never feel like they've done that, so I think they'll keep going as long as they feel they can get better.

But seriously I haven't seen any sign whatsoever that they're getting tired of it or want to quit anytime soon, they're working so incredibly hard and haven't even taken the time to think about when this should ever end, I think they just love what they do and there is nothing in their near future to make them stop. So we shouldn't worry about it.

That's never going to be the same.

i think they still do music, release studio albums, but when chris is bald:sneaky:, they will definitely stop touring and stop doing performances, so that may not take too long sadly

Lets compare Coldplay with similar but older bands;

Coldplay (1996) - 5 albums

U2 (1976) - 12 albums

R.E.M. (1980) - 15 albums

Radiohead (1985) - 8 albums

Travis (1990) - 6 albums

Oasis (1991) - 7 albums

Clearly the others are ahead, and most may release a couple more albums in the future I'd say. The thing is with Coldplay is that they tend to take a while between albums. So lets compare the bands together when they were a similar age. Chris Martin is now 34, so this is how many albums each band had released once their lead singer turned 34;

Coldplay - 5

U2 - 8

R.E.M. - 9

Radiohead - 5

Travis - 5

Oasis - 4

So Coldplay have been slower off the mark than U2 and R.E.M, but about the same as Radiohead, Travis and Oasis. One thing I would say is that Coldplay albums tend not just to be the albums, but they tend to be like eras, with quite a few b-sides. They have also released a number of EPs, especially like Prospekts March, which added to the VLV b-sides could have made a second album.

Obviously I hope they go on forever. I think as always, there was an element of joking around when Chris said that they wouldn't continue beyond 33. Hopefully they'll bring out many more albums and will cement themselves as one of the greatest bands ever. In my honest opinion I'd say that somewhere around 9 albums would be a best guess. I also wonder when they'll bring out a greatest hits album? (if they do). R.E.M. and U2 have had a few, even Radiohead have had one. I don't like artists releasing too many greatest hits albums, but I'd like to see Coldplay release one near the end of their career perhaps.

I don't think Coldplay will ever release a greatest hits album, they've said before that they don't like the idea of making fans pay for material that they already own.

And the Radiohead greatest hits album should be ignored. The band have condemned it and encouraged their fans not to buy it. It was released by their record company without their permission as a cheap way of making money. It doesn't contain any tracks from In Rainbows because that was released independently so the record company doesn't have access to the tracks.

Anyway, I think Coldplay will keep going until they are about 50 and then call it quits. But don't expect anything better than what they've already done after they turn 40. Typically the quality of a band's material decreases once they get old. And it takes Coldplay quite a long time to make each album.

hahahaha , coldplay greatest hits, reminds me sooo much of Chris on Extras with ricky gervais :D :D :D

ya they have not released a greatest hits but in 2006 they released their complete discography on vinyl i think

When i hear Greatest Hits and Coldplay in 1 sentence it also reminds me of "Extras".
