I find a week delay quite refreshing, most magazines on the shelves these days are already selling December 2011 :laugh3:

The "TV appearances that will surprise long-time fans but likely create new ones." quote scares me. The type of shows Coldplay wouldn't usually do are X Factor/Pop Idol type ones which is what I think he probably means :(

 

When I went to the Crisis gig in Liverpool we were invited into the soundcheck and Chris came to speak to us and he asked us our opinion on Coldplay doing X Factor (to which I basically screamed "GOD NO!" at him) so it's obviously something that has been discussed.

 

The whole Dave Holmes section of this article made me uneasy. He says it's not about money and popularity but about the band, but everything I see here is him trying to make them the biggest act in the world today, whatever it takes.

 

Totally agree. It was a real shame Paul McCartney had to go on it a couple of years back.

 

X Factor and any "talent" show contest is a big no no NO and would desperately disappoint, upset and alienate those long time fans who have appreciated their music for so long. It would be a massive big step backwards in my opinion. This is a band that set their stall out as high quality peformers very early on what with appearing alongside an orchestra at the Grammy's in 2003 and the such. What benefit they see the X Factor as I do not know.

Today is supposed to be momentous and exciting but with the news that HLH might be put on the scrap heap (tragically!!!) has me totally traumatised. In my opinion its up there with the best they have done and am really nervous now that it wont be on there.....surely it will be as they have used it to kick off every show!!!! Arghhhh!

I don't think we'll leave that one off, because it's supposed to be a sort of villainous, dark piece. The baddie. The Bond villain, an Orwellian thing. It came from reading "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy.

I was really impressed with this article, especially as someone interested in record promotion and management. I loved that it focused on Dave Holmes, almost primarily...but I've determined we have very different ideas about what's best to promo a record :lol:.

Secondly the promoting has already started with this article so what they can tell us aside how everything are wonderful, cool and perfect. Nevermind that no one is touring during winter and it will be a four month gap between release and tour (except gigs in December).

 

Thirdly he said how this rock formula has worn off and in the same time they are going to use it once again - single exactly 6 weeks prior to album realise. Hypocrisy at it's best.

 

The main question why they didn't give us release date in February? If they have plan. Why no album title when this ETIAW crap was released? This uncertainty has killed all my enthusiasm, don't know about other fans.

 

In the end of course I will buy MX, but I would prefer rather usual May release for the next album with usual summer tour.

Hmm...of course its better to get 12 new songs and I was also a strongly against playing new tunes at the festivals before the album comes out but now I'm not afraid that this and Major Minus will be on the EP cause I love both songs and I rather have a very good album than a not so good album though they are 12 completely new tracks.

But the album wasn't technically delayed...the members themselves gave projections of when they thought it would come out, but really, when you look at how they've released albums in the past, this gap is only a few short months longer than their other gaps between previous albums. Most bands aren't on strict rota schedules--things are ready when they're ready, and they try to keep them coming on some sort of predictable timeframe, but something being 40 months as opposed to 36 months (40 months is the gap between VLVOD and MX, 36 the gap between X&Y and VLVOD) is NOT an actual delay since no official ETA was ever given (band members vaguely giving a month in a radio interview don't count, like the whole "we'll have it out by Christmas 2010" thing). I don't think that was BS at all--I think that was Holmes talking and not realising he was coming off poorly (potentially) to some of the fanbase. His MO seems to be "bigger is better" and raking in the dough all the new converts will bring, but not worrying so much about fans that may lose interest after all the new direction and new promo, like you say. If things are really going to go the way he says they are and the album isn't stellar, I think a lot of people will be at least somewhat alienated, at least to the point where they'd be less likely to shell out the money to see Coldplay live, or for the casual fans, buy the album when they've heard half of it for free via live performance streams and weren't wowed.

 

For me it's less the timing of the release than the promo surrounding it. They could very feasibly start a tour ASAP after release in any country, as long as they didn't include huge outdoor stadiums on that particular leg and saved those for a re-visit in summer. Big names often tour in winter. I don't even mind the fact that they're concentrating on media promo first--I think that makes sense. It's just the KIND and VOLUME of that promo that worries me.

 

They're just modifying the old formula--yes, a single six weeks before release, in the traditional fashion, but they ALSO "released" half of the other songs anyway, so by that point they might as well release one more. That's not hypocrisy, that's just trying out both ways to play it safe and capitalizing on the traditional model while taking a risk and halfway trying out a new way to either create more buzz..or scare away people. They'll know about that half of the experiment in time.

 

They didn't tell us because they didn't KNOW in February. At this point, they still seem to not know as much about everything as most fans think they should at this point, but probably sometime in like, June they had to say "right, this is the official target release time, no going back on it now" and came up with October. This is what I'm afraid of. I'm really excited about the album and I love most of the songs I've heard so far, but I would be lying if I said I wouldn't feel a bit disappointed if when I get MX in October I've already heard most of it. Well, of course, there will be studio versions that will be new to us, but well, it takes out some of the excitement of getting a new album. It's weird, cause on the one hand I want songs like HLH, MTM and Charlie Brown to be on MX but on the other hand, I want more new songs. I'm weird :wacko:.

To your thirdly: He said that releasing a first single 6 weeks before the album has worn off. You think he's being a hypocrite because they're releasing Paradise 6 weeks before the albums release, but Paradise is the second single, not the first so he isn't being hypocritical.

 

To your comment about how it's unexciting because you've already heard half the album, I'm not going to deny that it takes away excitement but you very well knew that listening to Charlie Brown, Hurts Like Heaven, and UATW would do this so you can't blame them. They didn't force you to listen to the new songs. Just saying, in all fairness.

The first date they gave us was Christmas 2009, than it was going further and further. I'm not convinced with Holmes words about new promo formula or whatever and the more he insist everything is going according to plan the more I believe initial release should have been happened in May-June. Of course they wouldn't tell us they fucked up and were forced to delay album.

 

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I have this gut feeling.

 

Touring in winter is a huge risk because you depend upon weather condition and if it's a snowfall tracks with equipment could stuck somewhere. Not a good thing. But gigs only in UK are reasonable decision, it's small territory to cover. They did almost the same with viva tour.

 

As to new-old formula, technically they released only two songs from upcoming album, and they never said they are from new album which will be released somewhere in october, bla-bla-bla.

 

In February or at the beginning of March they knew about when it should be released (toward the autumn quote from EMI) and also letters MX has appeared on official site. Why they didn't give us any clue? It's still a mystery for me. How could you promote something when you even didn't mention this something??

 

And actually, still technically, Paradise is the first official single for MX. 6 weeks prior release. Ta-da.
