THEY HEARD THE SONGS!

Of course...they said it indirectly in the news article some hours ago.

I LOVE the photo. I especially like how Jonny, not Chris, is in front for a change.

BTW, i think he was talking about Princess of China in terms of a song he thought might be good, but then he sang it live once, and they must have thought it was crap. maybe a potential b-side, or may make the tracklisting in a last minute move.

But totally think he was talking about that song - they only played it once, and it was ok based on the clear recording i heard. Would love to hear the studio version though.

When he says 'played live' he means played as a band at the Beehive with no audience other than possibly the producers. Phil also mentioned Princess of China in his tweet. It was taken out of the setlist for a different reason and will still probably make the album. If they though it was crap they would never have played it at the festivals at all.

Well not crap by coldplay standards, but perhaps not album worthy - sounds like it may be a b-side to Paradise per Phil's tweet about getting these songs out there.

Its a bit said that there is no reaction on the new songs they heard. I don't know if they think they are good or bad. It doesn't matter for me but it would be interesting to know.

That was a very nice, informative and perspicuous interview, and even a tad moving at the end :wacky:

So when can I buy this magazine? I want it now! :D

"The honest answer is, I want anyone who spends money on us to be really pleased with their purchase," he says. "If you want to speak purely? How I really feel is, we don't make it for us. We don't make it to sell millions, we don't make it to answer critics. We make it so that if you're in a store and you buy our record, or a ticket - like a good sandwich - you go, 'That's good!' That's all it is. And I look to my heroes on both record and live and I think that the people I like the most are the people that are really working for their audience. Bruce [springsteen] being the No. 1 example. I don't really like the whole, 'We're just doing this and if you like it, great.' I don't subscribe to that."

The best fucking quote I've read from Chris Martin. Thank god he has said it rather than being a pretentious **** and saying 'well we're really in it for ourselves and if the fans don't get it then fuck them because they're a bunch of plebs. We only make music to satisfy the hip critics.'

I listen to Coldplay. Not to challenge myself and sit in my armchair wearing a monacle going 'hmmmm'. I listen to them because they are fun. Because they are fun to listen to. They are easy to listen to. And because I feel they are worthy to listen to. Just as worthy I feel as the other bands I consider great. And to me and millions of others they are great. And if people don't like that then fuck em.

And it's very encouraging and exciting to see Chris, Jonny and Dave Holmes talking so enthusiastically about the album. They seem more sure than anything.

Absolutely - agree with you, i love them for that - but the great thing about them is they make some great songs with social relevance but is both interesting musically yet enjoyable.

I love radiohead, and I still do, but the last few albums r nothing like their earlier ones - ok computer, bends, kid a (well this was definitely a game changer.).

I like Radiohead up until then. Amnesiac's quite good (Pyramid Song is quality) but the rest after that doesn't do anything for me at all. Regardless, Thom Yorke farting in a can would still be better than you're generic pub rock/wannabe Britpop like Kasabian.

the interview sounds like a band about to split up...

Agreed. But I thought In Rainbows was fantastic.

No don't say that! :(

But he is just being realistic, he doesn't know where they will be in a few years. That's just how chris is though. And I see that they love what they do, so don't know how long it would be for them to miss doing this. Everytime they do a live concert its our chance to show them how much we love them, and how much we want them around. We gotta convince them to stay for us. :D

i like kasabian but they are arrogant bastards

I was really impressed with this article, especially as someone interested in record promotion and management. I loved that it focused on Dave Holmes, almost primarily...but I've determined we have very different ideas about what's best to promo a record .

I guess I'm still kind of let down that they premiered songs live first, that long before the record, as much as I enjoyed seeing them myself and listening to them now. Holmes talks about how this follows a potential "new wave" of record promotion via East Asia as taken up by Kanye last year, and how that hearing songs before the record comes out builds excitement and makes people comfortable in that they "know what they're getting." I think that serves casual fans and new converts, but does a lot of a diehard fanbase (as we are :D) something of a disservice. I know from years on this board and as part of other diehard band fanbases that a lot "veterans" seem to enjoy swearing off everything (leaks, promo videos etc) until the actual release date and devouring everything new all at once to savor the surprise. I think for a lot of diehards, the slow leak and the sort of omnipresence and huge build-up to a record composed of spoilers takes a lot of the fun out of a new record (mainly the music, as it seems we'll already have heard about 50% of this album in some form several months before it hits shops).

I don't know, I'm a total nerd with this kind of stuff, but I just think they're concentrating so much on all the new fans they might get and not really completely understanding what I believe to be what a large portion of diehard fans prefer. I feel like some sort of balance is less of a risk, but financially, I guess their method could pay off

Also, I don't think the "old model" of single 6 weeks before an album is dead like he says it is, I think what's dead is legal downloading, no matter what the timeframe of release

This is what I'm afraid of. I'm really excited about the album and I love most of the songs I've heard so far, but I would be lying if I said I wouldn't feel a bit disappointed if when I get MX in October I've already heard most of it. Well, of course, there will be studio versions that will be new to us, but well, it takes out some of the excitement of getting a new album. It's weird, cause on the one hand I want songs like HLH, MTM and Charlie Brown to be on MX but on the other hand, I want more new songs. I'm weird .

^ Even I'M kind of disappointed about the lack of surprise in this whole thing (leak of album title included), and I'm one of those religious leak-listener types!

The same sort of thing happened with VLV in a way (and other albums of late from other bands I follow), where the album doesn't so much all leak at once like two weeks before the release, but a few tracks pop out here and there in the month beforehand. While that's somewhat effectively the same difference as what Coldplay did here, to me the difference is the fact that they'd be studio versions, and we get small little bites the closer we get to the date, when the rest rushes forth. I think as the date comes closer and closer, the more rabid I am for new stuff. When the date wasn't even announced and it was just "sometime in 2011," I wasn't fully in album-crazed mode yet. And as much as I really do like the new stuff, and as grateful as I am to have seen it live...I just like studio versions first, and I'm a sucker for the traditional model of "single --> leak of album in whole or in part --> album."

The "TV appearances that will surprise long-time fans but likely create new ones." quote scares me. The type of shows Coldplay wouldn't usually do are X Factor/Pop Idol type ones which is what I think he probably means :(

When I went to the Crisis gig in Liverpool we were invited into the soundcheck and Chris came to speak to us and he asked us our opinion on Coldplay doing X Factor (to which I basically screamed "GOD NO!" at him) so it's obviously something that has been discussed.

The whole Dave Holmes section of this article made me uneasy. He says it's not about money and popularity but about the band, but everything I see here is him trying to make them the biggest act in the world today, whatever it takes.

You guys, when is the magazine available to purchase??

^Unsure. It's a weekly publication, so perhaps Monday?

Completely agree, as usual :nice:. I'm worried about the TV promos too, both kind and number. Promo is great, but as I said before, Coldplay are kind of an ever-present thing in the media, it seems, even to fans. I don't want them to completely overdo it, which I think they've been on the verge of before, but now it sounds like they're pulling out all the stops. And I really will not be able to stomach them on Glee/X-Factor/American Idol etc. If they want to do a spot on 30 Rock I might oblige, but other than that...please just stick to the late-night shows and The Daily Show and Colbert Report.

Holmes...just seems way too concerned with their "bigness." I thought that was something Will said after X&Y--"we got bigger but not better." I have my own thoughts about their career trajectory, but their management team is so hyped up on bigness that I wonder what influence that will have on the music this time around again, because I don't know how well they'd weather another repeat of 2005 (not that that was a disaster, but all the same).

Just Jared has posted the full front cover, August 20, 2011, its probably already been seen elsewhere
