Viva got 6.9... That's pretty reasonable for them guys...

 

I'm going for 5.8. But I reckon Q will give it 5/5 and NME 9/10.

Don't get me wrong, their old stuff was great and I loved it (admittedly more than VLV), but I'm extremely happy they're looking for ways to evolve. The fifth album is only the second album after the trilogy, there could definitely be more to this 'new' Coldplay than we like to think. I think it's perfectly normal for an old(er) fan to be skeptical about the direction a band is going, but I guess I just don't care because I absolutely loved Viva! I sure do hope that doesn't start an argument...

The one thing I don't get is how on earth they could give VLV a higher rating than both Parachutes and AROBTTH

I found the parachutes review to be extremely douchey. Going on about the cons of it being 'safe' and 'harmless', when you could apply those same categories (and more accurately) to a million bands they love. However, it seems that it was written in a context when the hipster community had already bought into writing off the band as a short-lived trend riding off a cliche one-hit wonder.

 

Whereas, though the rating for AROBTTH is actually worse, the context and personality of the writer seems intent on giving the band much more credit insofar as he admits parachutes to be: "...innocuous, to be sure, but it was also honestly rendered, and the opening three songs, effortless and hummable as they were, were hard to deny."

 

The writer compliments the band in numerous ways, such as for going in a new direction, and saying that Martin's vocals improved. He also puts half the blame on the producer instead of the band itself.

 

So its odd, because from the sound of the review you'd imagine a more positive rating which lends to innumerous coldplay fan conspiracy theories against pitchfork.

 

VLV's rating though was a bit shocking. Even I wouldn't have given it a 6.9.

Don't really care what they think anyway. I Just care what I think ;)

Pitchfork seems to appeal to the subculture hipster movement. I wish there was a counter-culture movement (unlike hipsters) that valued subjectivity as the real way to express individuality... But that'd be like herding cats.

If Etiaw is on the album (highly likely) you cannot possibly expect a highish rating from pitchfork. Im going to say 6 at the max

Good point. That is like slapping an automatic -3.8 points for sure.

Who cares what they say? They rated Radiohead's KoL at 7.9 for example. That was better than all of Coldplay's albums? PLEASE. It didn't have but maybe ONE good song. They're clearly biased. Every music reviewer is. The only review you can trust is your own.

Only Bloom, Lotus Flower, Codex and Separator, the others sucked ass, specially Morning Mr Magpie and Feral. That should have had quite a big 4.5 at least

It depends on the reviewer, and Coldplay are disliked by many indie publications because they're so commercial. I'd suggest reading Q magazine - they're kinder to the likes of Coldplay, U2, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Muse...

Q is so predictable and stale I find. Not much variety.

I have always liked elec music like Lotus Flower, and ballads like Cdx but Feral? it makes my head explode.

 

I prefer the Lone rmx of it, and Morning Mr Magpie will always suck

Everybody says Codex is great, but it just doesn't click for me like, say, Pyramid Song does. Feral, on the other hand is brilliant.

I'm not much of a remix guy but the Lone one is pretty good. Morning M'lord (the guitar version) is great, but otherwise I agree.
