The Drums' Jonny Pierce: I Hate U2 And Coldplay

Featured Replies

He slams both band's political opinions...

August 24, 2011 by Jason Gregory

The Drums frontman Jonny Pierce has said he hates bands like U2 and Coldplay because they dabble with politics.

In an interview with Q, Pierce said he was not very political and that he had no plans to impose his opinions on the band's fans.

“It's really boring to me. I hate U2 and Coldplay, bands that can't be bands for the life of them. They can't just write great songs, they have to be doing other stuff, a statement all the time,” he said.

“I don't mind certain statements, but U2 haven't released a good record in ten years, why don't they just run for office? [laughs] Just write me a great love song, that's all I want!"

The Drums are currently preparing for the release of their new album 'Portamento', due out on September 12.

I disagree on both cases but I respect his opinion to solely expect music from them. I think political involvement is not regarded by everyone the same way.

Everyone to their own opinion I guess.

But I think it's kind of good that bands like U2 use their fame as a platform to inform people about political issues...it's just when the bands become so enthralled about these issues and, in people's opinion, neglect the music.

/in before the hate.

Oh hell I don't give a fuck. People have their opinions. Although I kinda agree with him about U2. But why do people always use that word "hate" so often? :dozey:

You know how interviews can go. Maybe he just said: "I don't like the fact that U2 and Coldplay make political statements." And they translated that into: "I hate U2 and CP..."

But anyways, I disagree. I can see his point though. And U2 are maybe going a little too far. But I think it's good that bands try to help the world a little not only by making music. This doesn't mean every band should make political statements however, hell no. He's a little bit right but he's wrong. I do like The Drums' music a lot, happy feel good seems to go well on them. (Can't say the same about Coldplay)

I prefer bands that express their opinion about what's going on with the world rather than bands that close their eyes and live in their little rockstar bubble :dozey:

The thing of it is, I'm not sure I would go that far about either band as far as being political. Sure they campaign for stuff, but why is trying to help the aids crisis or improve living conditions considered "political". That's kind of sad if that's really the state of politics today.

Both bands also seem to at least try to be non partisan in their political stuff. Chris makes no secret of his personal political views, but he doesn't really seem that intent in pushing them on others and the rest of the CP boys are dead quiet on that front. Bono has also staunchly resisted any effort by others to identify him with a specific political movement or leaders.

IMHO, most of what these two bands get called "political" over are in reality, more aptly described as charitable issues, which aren't really political at all except to people who wish to make them so.

Lastly, U2 have made 2 great albums in the last ten years.

Both Coldplay and The Drums have the same manager... weird that he'd say that.

Agreed that I like people to use there fame as a platform for something more important. I honestly see nothing wrong with saying "lets make a better world, dont be a bad person..." when that type of simple sentence can actually reach thousands of people and make a difference. I don't know, just having fame and not using it to better the world but instead just taking in the benefits isn't very respectable to me. But as far as pushing republican or democratic views or whatever I suppose I can see where he's coming from. Of course I dont hate anybody for saying "I'm a republican".

I dont know him

* irrelevant

Oh dear, here come the jealousy calls.

I'm not sure why he'd be using Coldplay as an example now because they haven't really actively promoted charitable or political causes to the public since the Twisted Logic tour. Sure, there's been a link on their website when there's been some terrible natural disaster but nothing like back then.

I was just gonna say that. Come on, not everyone can like everything! ;)

well about that matter i know a band which cancelled a concert because there was some poltiical-social slogan at the venue, and the singer which seemed of the opposite party justified it as the band is open, everyone had their own opinion so they won't play in a venue which have slogans of this sorts as they are apolitical.

a bit so ilogical imo.

may be the drums dude is just following the old cheap promo option, talking about other bands to be talked about.

Now we all know the Drums have an album coming out on 9/12. Mission accomplished!

Complaining about complaints.

welcoome to coldplaying.com :awesome:

Maybe he's jealous about Coldplay

AAAAHHHHHH *punches hole in wall*

^Lol, how come everyone's always jealous of Coldplay....

:P

While I agree it is frustrating that any and all criticism (and anything that could be remotely interpreted as criticism) is met here with accusations of jealousy, I can also see where such accusations come from. It's not hard to imagine that a large percentage of the musicians/pundits/people who deride coldplay the loudest for being to "mainstream", would also turn around and join them in a minute if given the chance. Not everyone who dislikes or criticizes Coldplay is jealous of them, but massive success does have a tendency to breed jealousy just the same.

I like Coldplay although I do think they are not as musically complex or innovative as some other bands (and that's not altogether a bad thing.-writing a good simple pop song is harder than people think). That said, if I could be in any modern band, it would probably be them. Why? Because they get to travel the world doing some of the most massive gigs anyone's playing these days, make loads of cash, have legions of adoring fans (especially women :wink3:), have access to anything they want in multiple colors etc. I can totally see how that kind of success could cause hard feelings among a musician (or civilian) who's busted their ass for years with very little to show for it in today's really tough professional music marketplace.

Just my two cents...
