This Sunday: Free Coldplay download

Snap-up this album by Britian's biggest-selling band and relive their stunning performance at this year's iTunes Festival

Download your free album from Coldplay’s stunning live performance at this year’s iTunes Festival, featuring previously unreleased tracks, and read our exclusive interview with Britain’s biggest band in The Sunday Times online, in-paper and on our iPad app, this weekend.

Mylo Xyloto

The title track from Coldplay’s forthcoming album consists of two strange sounding words. The meaning of which is intentionally ambiguous. An ethereal, cosmic-sounding instrumental it suggests a shift away from the band’s traditional melancholic rock.

Hurts Like Heaven

This guitar-heavy track is also from their new album and has been a staple of the band’s summer festival sets. Chris Martin has said the track is proof the band are taking risks and evolving their sound, helped along by the likes of ambient master Brian Eno.

God Put A Smile Upon Your Face

Released in July 2003, this is one of the melodic rockers’ bounciest numbers. The fourth single from their successful second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, it was a hit with fans and critics alike who were seduced by its soaring vocals and groovy drum patterns.

Viva La Vida

The title track from their last award-winning album became the band’s first single to top the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and was even featured on an episode of The Simpsons. It’s a fine example of the baroque pop sound Coldplay have made their own with sweeping strings, heavy percussion, catchy bass lines and Chris Martin’s heartstring-tugging vocals.

Clocks

A late addition to their second album, this popular track features a distinctive piano riff which Chris Martin apparently dreamt up during a late-night studio session. Regarded by critics as one of the band’s finest songs, it charted at number 9 in Britain. Its opening piano arpeggios have been much sampled by the likes of superstar DJ David Guetta and hip hopper Lupe Fiasco.

Fix You

This anthemic rock ballad was rumoured to be inspired by the death of Chris Martin’s father-in-law. The sentimental lyrics, delivered in the singer’s trademark falsetto, offer advice on dealing with pain and sorrow. The track peaked at number 4 in the UK and proceeds from the sale were donated to help victims of Hurricane Katrina in the USA.

Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

The first single from the new album, this crowd-pleasing number is laced with classic Britpop guitar sounds. More upbeat than their usual tear-jerking fare, it’s a fine example of melodic stadium rock that deserves to be played over and over.

Mylo Xyloto by Coldplay is released on October 24. Pre-order the new album on iTunes and get new single Paradise now.

Download A Free iTunes Live Coldplay Album This Sunday With The Times

Thanks to UK newspaper the Times, this Sunday Britons can pick up a free copy of an album featuring Coldplay’s stunning live performance at this year’s iTunes Festival, including some of the band’s most recognisable tracks, as well as some previously unreleased tracks.

The free download will feature the following tracks, which Coldplay – currently cementing their position as the UK’s most popular band – recorded at the Roundhouse in Camden on 22nd July, and will offer the perfect tease for their upcoming October release of new album Mylo Xyloto:

■Mylo Xyloto

■Hurts Like Heaven

■God Put A Smile Upon Your Face

■Viva La Vida

■Clocks

■Fix You

■Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

That iTunes performance was effortlessly brilliant – as ever with Coldplay – and the opportunity to pick it up on CD for free should not be missed. Though of course the small print would have to say that access to the newspaper’s website actually costs £1 for the first 30 days then £2 for every subsequent week – but it still works out as a pittance of an amount for seven outstanding live tracks.

It’s easy to forget just how iconic Coldplay’s discography is, and how every studio album so far, including the upcomer, has featured at least one instant classic track. But as with the list above, it is in fact possible to pull together multiple Greatest Hits playlists with ten or twelve songs on each which would be more than worthy of that label.

The paper are also promising an exclusive interview with the band online, in-paper and on their iPad app. Visit their site for further updates.

Great! Can people outside UK download it too??

Cool! Another live album! I loved Live 2003 and LeftRightLeftRightLeft!

So, people have the chance to hear the new song Mylo Xyloto, also othe name of the new album from the band... haven't they?

Don't want to get too excited until I hear it will be available in the U.S.

This is brilliant news. I've always wanted a live version of the current GPASUYF and it'll be interesting hearing a couple of new songs through the headphones too!

But it does seem a bit strange how Coldplay haven't said anything officially about this, and there's no indication as to what the album/download is called or what the cover looks like?

So Mylo Xyloto is the very short instrumental before Hurts Like Heaven that we heard live? Sad it´s not longer than that...still great to download this album!

"Q. Hi Oracle,

I was wondering if the song played before Hurts Like Heaven during the festival circuit is actually called Mylo Xyloto and was just shortened to MX to avoid spoiling the title of LP5 before the title was officially announced. Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

Ta-da! I wondered when someone would pick up on that after what I had said about it in a couple of answers.

MX did indeed mean Mylo Xyloto but at the festivals, as I did mention, it wasn't a full song, just a prelude/introduction to Hurts Like Heaven."

it wasn't a full song at the festivals but it will probably be a full song in the album i think!!! this free coldplay download is probably nothing special apart from live reordings from the itunes gig. I mean...if they didn't play the full song at the gig, how can they release the full song in the free album??!! am i right?

Agreed, it'll just be the little xylophone (I believe), part!

Great News! I'd been waiting for this ep since the itunes festival and the tracklist looks great! (Hurts Like Heaven!!!)

I do have some questions though

1. Is it out yet, cause I don't want to miss my chace to get this

2. Do I have to have a subscription or something cause the arcticle kind of sounds like I do

And of coarse

3. Will it work in the U.S!!!!!!

And Canada too...will it download in Canada? Once someone finds out if it works outside UK please let us know. :)

Free Live Album in the UK Times?!

I wish this was available worldwide!! I would do anything for their live professionally recorded (free) music. Hope you all enjoy it. maybe share it. I wonder what will be on it...

http://coldplay.com/newsdetail.php?id=789

It's UK and Ireland only and 5 more tracks will be released next weekend. I'll be giving my sister a ring to pick up a copy. I'm sure others will share though. If not. I sure will!

Are you sure its UK and Ireland only? There is an option to subscribe with U.S dollars.

Is this photo cover of the magazine ?

ColdplayCoverst.jpg

Sunday's newspaper also features an interview with the band which was done on their recent trip to Japan (cover shot below)

maybe we can find this issue somewhere international...hopefully...

So wait a minute...there will be a physical copy!? :shocked2:

I hope people share this. It sucks living in the U.S. sometimes.

I also hope someone shares this, puts it on the thread with the rest of the Albums.
