How much of Ghost Stories is about Gwyneth?

Featured Replies

I recall Chris saying some years ago that VLV was their Unforgettable Fire.

I feel like this is going to be their Achtung Baby.

^*unforgettable fire :)

Damn spell check! Thx

I just posted this in the Another's Arms thread, but I want to share here as well:

Okay so I just re listened to Another's Arms after the news of Chris and Gwyneth's split and I really listened to the lyrics and what I got out of it was this:

When Chris says, "when the pages rip right through me" I think that's a good reference to the rumor in the magazine of Gwyneth cheating. Then when he says "when the world means nothing to me" I think he's referencing the fact that he is in one of the biggest bands in the world and has all these great fans, all this success and fame, but it doesn't mean anything to him without her. Its just something I really got to thinking about. I just wanted to share how I interpreted Another's Arms now.

Also from the iTunes concert wheres hes like "you guys are the best blah blah blah", and saying its been so long they have forgotten fans care or something. It really hasn't been long.

And MX was their Pop...

And MX was their Pop...

Yep

Now that I think of it, the 'plastic', unnatural feeling MX gave to me is explained. It looked more like self-persuasion of happiness than actual feeling. Perhaps, Chris is returning to being more honest with himself, though with much pain and difficulty.

If such interpretations are true I don't see how he will be able to carry out a proper tour for this album, singing these songs and thinking about their meaning every other night. Very sad.

On the other hand it might be an escape and/or a cathartic experience for him.

I agree and those of us lucky enough to get to see them will make him realise how much love there is for him.

I also get the impression that while we are all finding out about this now- there's been some distance for him for a while. So he's further along in the grieving process- which you would have to be to launch an album and all that entails.

I think this album will be darker lyrically. My all time favorite album is about the breakup of a marriage, Achtung Baby. I have a feeling this Coldplay album will compete with Parachutes and AROBTTH for favorite Coldplay album.

I really believe that the three secret shows in LA that admitted only major Coldplay fans were to help Chris realize that he is loved and to help him get back to what he loved, music. Chris is certainly good at making shows intimate and it is heartbreaking that Gwyneth and he couldn't work things out, but they seem to be moving forward with their marriage in a loving, positive way. I think intimate shows will please the fans and the band after the bombastic production that was the MX tour.

This describes exactly the way I feel and I hadn't realised that until you pointed it out.

Yeah that is probably true. I still think it's quite admirable for someone who doesn't like to speak about their personal life to be able to perform songs that are specifically about that. Because this album might be Chris' most personal. He is making sacrifices for the sake of music... This better be a damn great album.

Can someone explain me how songs like Magic or Always in My Head are about breaking up?

I think the lines from Magic "and I just got broken/broken into two/still I call it magic/when i'm next to you" make that connection and are very direct.

My body moves/Goes where I will/But though I try my heart stays still/It never moves from Always in my Head. The title also stands out.

That aside, I wonder what Chris will do for any interviews/press for the album? I can imagine he will be asked all the time about the albums apparent connection to his divorce. That won't go over too well.. Hopefully they can respect his wishes and talk about the music and the few live shows.

I read that the media won't be allowed to ask questions about his personal life. But that came from a tabloid.

Is Atlus also about this as well? Think about it.

Atlas was written for Catching Fire.

Well, I don't want to be cruel saying these words, it's not my intention at all, but maybe that will be good for the tour. What I mean is that if that's true, in my opinion they are better when they are in a sad mood, being full of pain. You know, the famous sad Coldplay.

I think the reality here is that every musician puts pieces of their life into their songs. In the case of Coldplay, this has always been indirect and abstract. What's happening now is that we're going to get something slightly more transparent and focused.

I don't think there's anything wrong with acknowledging this connection. None of us would ever wish misfortune on the band; this is just us as fans carefully grasping the complexity of the new material. So far, my respect for boys has never been higher. This album is powerful.

And MX was their Pop...

Pop is a damned good album... I'd rather MX be Coldplay's Pop than their No Line On The Horizon...

Always in my Head is about her, thinking about the good times.

Yes but what if it has undertones like the rest of the era.

MX is a good album but it's them going in a different direction, maybe it didnt live up to the Coldplay standards that we've come to expect but it has some really good songs in it :)

Kind of obvious this will be a breakup album, but that's not a bad thing. I think it's the kind of thing Coldplay could do better than most artists/groups.

The song was inspired by the book/film and written specifically for Catching Fire. So I doubt any of it is about GP.
