Probably going to get a lot of hate for this but I'd be interested in people's serious opinions etc.

I listen to so much music and never seen a band create such stunning music to utter rubbish, bands have the odd 1 crap album or whatever sure but what an incredible band they were up until X and Y and maybe Viva La Vida. The last 2 albums are just been complete garbage. I understand going in a new direction and all that but the last 2 albums are just generic electronic pop crap reinforced by the people they have collobarated with. I saw them the other week at Capital FM show and the songs weren't so band with an actual band playing but what about writing beautiful outros like in White Shadows, Square One and the breakdown in Politik. I'd be happy if they just went to playing as an actual band. Just don't know where these magical moments and crafted genius melodies/lyrics from the first 3/4 albums went. I think they pretty much exclude all first 3 albums from their setlists nowadays apart from Yellow but who wants to really hear that for the millionth time. I travelled a long way to just see them play Shiver when they brought it back a few years ago. I could go on a long time but I also thing Chris' piano playing is second to none and it's being so wasted with this Paradise Debacle.

Also it's a joke the prices they charge for their tickets now to say the least.

I love parachutes, it's my favourite album ever! AROBTTH is great, but I hate X&Y, never ever listen to it. I think they screwed up X&Y and AHFOD. I love ghost stories because its such an honest and different album but they should've taken a break after it and made a better album. Paradise is like a classic now, It was one of my most disliked Coldplay songs but now I adore the live version. I do think they should play some old songs from parachutes but its not something bands usually do. They will just play the popular songs and the ones that will get the crowd going. However they are introducing a new voting system where you can vote for what songs you'd like to be played, and I can assure you thats die hard Coldplay fans will vote for the unpopular songs that haven't been played live ever, or for a while.

as far as the last two albums being gargabe, thats really up to you and the genres you like/dislike, so its not a fact, for me the last two album shows what they are capable of and how they can change their skin while their core its still there.

for the concert thing, you cant blame coldplay, thats up to the music industry in general, foo figthers, muse cost the same exact price as coldplay, there are bands like the rolling stones that are even more expensive, or acts like taylor swfit cost a lot more than coldplay. The music industry is changing so quickly that i wont be surprised if in 10 years they will charge 200 euros a ticket

I wouldn't call it falling from grace but more like change of style/genre.

I get what you're trying to convey though. But I basically agree with everything ^ Jonny and the Cake said.

Interesting how your opinion has changed since meeting members of the band.

Not necessarily a bad thing, just interesting.

I agree with your opinion (as all of you who know me will not be surprised about). Have you seen this thread ? http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/index.php?threads/the-ultimate-oldplaying-thread-s-bs-tbr-p-arobtth-x-y-vlv.104785/ You'll find many like-minded people in there.

It's true that posts like yours sometimes get a lot of hate, but I think you voiced a legit concern and explained why so I hope you won't get any comments like that. :)

Not since meeting of the band, but because I've listened to the new songs a crap load of times now and compare them to the stuff that's in the charts now. And I just use different words now lol. I still think this album sucks immensely in comparison to Coldplay's earlier work, but just because I really despise it doesn't mean it's bad music. It's just totally different from Coldplay's earlier style.

But yeah, my inital post I think was "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS" or something alike ahah

I do agree that the Oldplay is definetely superior to Newplay (outside of Mylo Xyloto) but really I don't think the last 2 albums are "complete garbage". They are still creative and different songs, and I find then very very enjoyable, much better than the mainstream. It's like your freaking out because they've turned to total mainstream. They haven't gone full mainstream and never will because of Guy and Jonny. Chris' taste has gone pretty much full blown mainstream however. But I guess it's a part of how you see music. The more you despise mainstream, pop, and everything about it the more you'll see Coldplay's newer music as mainstream just because it's a little poppy. I think that's what most people who call Coldplay "mainstream" think of now. It's just a little poppy, must be mainstream. However, in my opinion I really like pop if it's done well, AKA Coldplay's pop. That's why I don't think it's mainstream because mainstream is absolute trash nowadays outside of a few gems.

But in all honesty, when I initially listened to the world premiere of AOAL on the radio with you guys some weeks ago with the best intentions and hopes, I could not help noticing that to me it sounded like all the other dancepop songs that dominate the airwaves nowadays. I could not set it apart from them - were it not for Chris's voice it could have been any artist, imho.

Some Newplay songs may not be mainstream, but the majority are and I have the impression they are getting closer and closer with each album. To me, AHFOD is the most mainstream album Coldplay have ever made.

You are right about Coldplay's crawling closer and closer to mainstream. X&Y was the first tiny hint of pop in Coldplay, Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends was a little poppier, MX even poppier, but still mainly keeping real instruments. I still don't think any of these albums are true pop, not even MX, that one has Princess of China and Up In Flames is a little poppy but that's it really, Oh and Paradise has a poppier feel too. But really most of the rest of the songs in MX are just colorful, with pop here and there. I guess you could call MX pop but not in the "mainstream" sense. (Not today's mainstream anyway, it was closer to the mainstream back then however, which I absolutely loved for the most part). GS was their first album where they started heavily using electronic. They may have had electronic influences in MX but here in GS they pretty much went full on electronic. The song structure itself was also creeping quite closer to mainstream, so it wasn't just them wanting to try out electronics for a change I guess, their song structure was also getting more mainstream wheras MX was still a little far off from true mainstream structure. AHFOD, while crawling away from the full-on electronics of GS, the song structure just got more mainstream which I'd hope had never've happened. I want Coldplay to veer away from mainstream and try something different, and in some songs they certainly did but you can tell this is the most pop album. At least the real drums are crawling back now. But now Coldplay's going to mainstream a little. I still think they haven't crossed the line fully, like in AOAL I personally think it's different from mainstream of this day, but it kind of feels like it in a way. I don't know lol, It's getting closer. Hopefully Coldplay takes a break and realize they kind of need to step it up a bit. Again as for AOAL I think it's still got originality in it (yay for actual guitar, that's one thing AOAL has that most mainstream stuff today don't) and the drumbeat is very original, yes it definetely has some mainstream aspects to it. But for me it's not full mainstream yet which is good. I still love AHFOD and think it's not full mainstream but it's crawling closer than ever before.......

I see your points and I agree in that GS was the turning point in terms of getting real electronic (and the wrong decisison in my opinion).

Overall I like MX more than GS or AHFOD.

Agreed.

For me personally they've been "mainstream" (whatever that means) ever since AROBTTH. That was when I didn't get blank stares for mentioning Coldplay as my favourite band anymore. Instead I got knowing looks of either slight disgust for liking such a whiny and humorless band, or gleeful expressions of people and everybody's mother loving Clocks as well. Suddenly they were played on regular radio stations, the gig venues were getting bigger, and Chris made the gossip news columns for allegedly smashing a paparazzi's car windscreen. :D

Actually, for a while back then I felt betrayed. I didn't want them to be big. I wanted them to be my small, well-kept secret - something that made me different from the rest. I let go of that notion quite quickly, though. They will forever be "my" band, because of all the history and memories I connect with them. Nobody is taking that from me, even if they are much more well-known now.

And for my taste, once they got bigger I quickly noticed that it also made them more confident and eager to try out new things. I wouldn't be a fan today if they had made Parachutes seven times by now. But yeah, I totally get it when some people don't feel the current direction. I happen to like it and they still make my life better on a regular basis. Maybe I have fallen from grace as well. :p

Sorry, did I venture off? I started writing and then forgot what the thread was about.

I still dont get why you hate mainstream music, like, what did it do to get hated by you people? im not criticizing you, i just really wanna understand, and its not about the money cause some not-mainstream acts make more money than mainstream ones...

maybe people don`t like that majority of people do the same things without thinking. Then that majority can be doing really wrong things and ruin a lot of things, when the things they do, are not considered and thought and planned carefully enough before

Apart from the commercial implications you mentioned, I just plainly don't like it in terms of style. A question of personal taste. It feels shallow for me, not profound enough, and I simply do not like the music itself. Of course there are gems hidden in it as well, but the vast majority of contemporary songs are garbage to me.

I think in the 70s I might have liked mainstream music but not today.

also, but that phenomenon is seen also in different occasions, in very many cases

many people say 70`s was a good time also with good politics and systems. I don`t know, I was not born back then, but I can hear, see and feel, that there was certain goodness and warmth in the air back then

This is slightly off-topic, but I (born in the 90s) really wish I had been young on the 70s...and I can connect well with the music of those times, it was more to my liking. I also really like the ideas behind the Flower Power movement :) Oh, and there was Pink Floyd !

but a lot of not-mainstream songs talk about shallow stuff too! most rock music just talks about trashing hotel rooms, doing drugs and having sex! Also theres this phenomenon going on with mainstream music, most songs now dont talk about sex almost anymore, or drugs or bad behaviour they talk about the same stuff not-mainstream music talks about, happiness... sadness...

the only difference is that it appeals the radio and thus reaches more people and makes more sales (but artists dont get money from sales only for concerts) and why should that be considerated like a bad thing?

just because 9000000000 people listened to sorry by justin bieber doesnt mean they weren't thinking about it..... they maybe were listening to the radio while waiting for someone in the car, or maybe listening it with their beloves ones, and in a 50 years time, you may listen to sorry by justin bieber and think "wow remember when i was 14 and this song was popular and i had a great time with it in the background"

this is what music is... not money, not mainstream/underground, music is background for your memories, theres no such thing as shallow music, its all part of your life and nothing that is part of your life is shallow

we can have the 70`s back, that is what I am sure of

who get the money from the record/cd sales then? if artist, somewhere, where you work, get their money only from the gigs. the record companies. But you have to get some money as well, when people spin your music in supermalls and any other public place, right? if not, move into Finland, here we have a bit better rules! and rulers :D

so first you need to publish a single to be heard from the radio, and that way, your name gets bigger, you get more concerts and may become a musician, in there, where you are? alright

bands/artists get money for the sales or either band merch or concert tickets and just a little part from cd/download sales, the rest goes all to the record company that's why bands/acts are actually a lot less richer than people may think, a lot of the money they make goes to the record company, the bigger you get the more money your record company recieves, but if you dont do well in concerts, then you're screwed
