Shows how much times have changed then. Back in '08 Radiohead was easily the most popular band on Coldplaying (other than Coldplay themselves of course).Β

I wouldn't compare The Smile with Radiohead, and how much movement each one causes. Also, Radiohead delivered in 2008 their best album of the last 23 years, to say the least, and In Rainbows became hugely popular. But even then (and before, and after) Radiohead never tried to reach the massive level Coldplay was then looking for. And nowadays there's no point comparing both bands, I think.

Agreed. While there hasn't been much going on with Radiohead since A Moon Shaped Pool and Spectre, their lack of new material has helped them achieve a status and cult following that isn't shared by many bands. In many ways, I think that Coldplay would have been seen in a similar light if they'd stayed with their pre-MX style. I've seen plenty of memes about the quality of Coldplay's music but none about Radiohead's.

That said I do compare The Smile and Radiohead because they are in effect the continuation of the latter, the three Smile albums are probably the closest we'll get for a long time to new Radiohead material. While I don't engage that much with the Radiohead community, I expect that there is a lot of overlap between the Radiohead and Smile fanbases - undoubtedly more than the Radiohead/Smile and Coldplay fanbases today.

Coldplay's lyrics are sometimes, in my humble opinion, Naive and Pompous. I do feel that way, I'm sure some others think the same. You made a great point that these lyrics sound so effortless and cheesy. They are almost like the PLACEHOLDERS for the certain melody. To blame Chris Martin or not to blame, that is the question really. I admit that Coldplay used to have lyrics that dwell rich hidden meanings, they adopted some good old metaphors. However, some of the songs composed in recent years are just too plain and simple in my opinion. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy listening to COLDPLAY's songs nonetheless even if they sound a bit cheesy. Take MY UNIVERSE and SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS for them being the 2 of my least favourite Coldplay songs as examples, they are successful in terms of Commercialization of Music Industry. It is really sad that Coldplay are satisfied with such effortless approach to keep on writing such lazy lyrics. But well, what can you expect from a music behemoth like them? People are still gonna listen to certain songs even if they are lazily written and composed. I guess the true happiness doesn't necessarily derive from complex lyrics and structures. AETERNA is simple and repetitive but they did a good job on melodies, so every time I listen to it, it really makes me want to dance to that LAZY BEAT and PATTERN. Coldplay is like that I guess, don't expect too much and just enjoy what you enjoy. Let Coldplay do what they want to do, write what they want to write. I guess that is what I want to say. Even if they are cheesy and wanting to stay cheesy, I will still listen to their music and love them. After all, their music is basically flowing in my blood after so many years of listening nonstop.

What makes lyrics cheesy and why make a big deal out of them being cheesy?Β

Relax, no one is making a big deal out of lyrics being cheesy. Certainly not me. For your question 'What makes lyrics cheesy?', I guess you'll have to expose yourself to more lyrically well-written music, that is the only way where one could compare to know the differences. However, lyrics being cheesy or not is not the core of music. Ask yourself why you decide to listen to Coldplay. Because their music sounds great to a general public even with cheesy lyrics and lazy arrangements of some songs. If they can provide you the emotional attachment you require, then they're arguably good.

Radiohead releasing an album called In Rainbows in 2008, and now, 16 years later, Coldplay releasing a song with this emoji 🌈

My CD of We Pray finally came, but the card was bent and the CD had fingerprint marks on it. Not happy.

I don't know if it's my problem or the CD being too new, but neither Windows Media Player nor Exact Audio Copy were able to figure out what the CD was. WMP assumed it was something by the 'Blessid Union of Souls'. Granted it did also believe that The Unforgettable Fire by U2 was actually War by the same artist. Fre:ac did figure it out, but I couldn't figure out how to embed the metadata to the ripped files. In the end I had to manually input the information into EAC to get something consistent with the rest of my rips.

Edit: Apparently EAC can't add metadata to WAV files, even though Windows Media Player. Ripping this CD is a nightmare.

My mp3 version was a bit screwed up with the end cut-off so i'm going to reupload it right here

Anyway, I have gotten the file into other file formats (some with better audio quality) so here are my links:

Something is off with the way they've set up the album on iTunes. I pre-ordered Feels Like I'm Falling In Love on iTunes since they weren't going to release it on CD for some reason. This worked as expected. However, on the Moon Music page the song shows as purchased, but can't be played nor downloaded. I bought We Pray on iTunes today because it was cheap and I can get a discount on the full album should I buy the iTunes version too - this was not released as a single on iTunes and can only be bought as a part of the Moon Music album. This means that the other versions won't be available, and presumably this applies to Apple Music too. I really don't know why they set it up like this.

The entire single release strategy has been really weird so far. First they release their first single in years but not physically, and release one remix a few weeks before the next single, which did get a physical release but is marketed as if it was a non-album single. And the physical release includes versions of the song that are for now exclusive to it. Who on earth is making these decisions?

I can’t even decipher what songs have cheesy lyrics and really can’t tell in the first place. πŸ˜… sooooo. And I care for music/sound first obviously then the lyrics after.Β

WE PRAY is of course another mishmash of tired pop and R&B tropes with a heavy added dose of Christianity. I can’t be bothered to go digging to listen to the leaks but so far and based on the two singles we've had it's not looking good I’m afraid.Β

I’ve now witnessed this band fail to capitalize on a brilliant attempt to reinvent themselves TWICE! What could and should have been after both VLV and EL wasn’t to be unfortunately. What remains to be seen is whether they double down on this nonsense and do features with Pitbull and Lady Gaga for their self-titled album or go back to the basics.Β

i think you'll find it's a pleasant mix of oldplay and newplay, atleast as far as the tracks you haven't heard go.

If you go digging, most of the songs on the album have been heard in one form or another already, and so far it's been so good. I think it says a lot that your post is the first I've seen in quite a while that is negative about the new album. Overall the community at large seems to be looking forward to it, certainly a lot more than MOTS.

I think the first thing you should do is listening to other artists. Compare BonoΒ΄s lyrics on U2Β΄s worst album with most of ColdplayΒ΄s songs since 2020 and itΒ΄s absolutely devastasting. But even more, look into ColdplayΒ΄s discography. "The Scientist" has a lovely chorus, nothing spectacular but emotional and touchy, in lyrics terms, but the verses are miles away from any song you can think of on the last four years. And I could go on like this for lots of songs.Β

Chris have talked about lyrics a lot in the early years, saying he wanted to improve and write better lyrics. ThatΒ΄s when he wanted to be the new Bono, and thatΒ΄s a good example to follow. But now itΒ΄s obvious that his approach to this matter is completely different.
