Featured Replies

This track isnt boring, but more simplistic

Maybe the others are more complex structured, this is too straightforward i think.

I think it's a solid song but on first listen it didn't really grab my attention and keep it. I don't know what exactly it is, but Chris' songwriting style from MOTS is continuing to let me down a bit

Couldn't agree more with some of the Viva-stan crew here. I've felt this way since MOTS but the simplicity in the production style ends up making parts of songs feel empty. To a casual listener, it ma

I dont understand why they choose these kind of tracks

Why not just be more alternative like in the past?

Two possible explanations:

1) Because being more alternative you don´t fill stadiums all over the world.

2) Because they don´t like/want to be alternative, they really like the music they´re writing.

I guess both are true.

I generally like it but still feel like sth missing. The last part of the song is great, I wish it lasts longer. I guess I expected more although the chorus is stuck in my head.

Not a bad song but not that great either. 🤷

People say it's better than higher power, maybe the chorus is better yes but the outro of higher power is better than this song as a whole, lyrically they both are bad but i think Chris tried more on Higher power

This is incessantly wrong though they've been perfecting this song for 2 years and Chris said he put everything into it his heart and soul. So if you think he's stopped trying please remember that this album took 3 years to record and perfect

Yet the outro on this track is one of the most alternative things they've done

It looks like my early positive reaction to the snippet was premature. @lennyrott1 and @Doomotron described the shortcomings perfectly well. What I AM interested in is the very ending of the track from 03:34 to 03:57 where they have this magnificent almost Pink Floyd-esque composition of strings, synths and guitar that sounds extremely interesting. If they had incorporated these elements throughout the song and altered the horrendous over-production, they might have been able to save the song.

Everyday Life was made only 5 years ago and showcased how this band can still write good music, and yet they consciously continue down this path of mediocrity.

This really breaks my heart because Chris said he put everything he has into this new album

The chorus is an earworm for sure. But not fun :)

I think it's great and while everyone is entitled to their opinions you're perhaps expecting a little too much after Coloratura. This is a single after all and in my humble opinion it's way better than Higher Power, Let Somebody Go and My Universe from Music of the Spheres. Yes, it is a simple song, but it has a great beat, sticks in your head and is very catchy. Move on from Oldplay, they have...

Well, you´re completely right and of course they follow the direction they just want to. In my case, it´s not that I´m expecting something like Coloratura, what I´m expecting is anything away from everything that was not Coloratura or POTP. For example, I´m not a big fan of Higher Power, but they had never done a song like that one, with that rhythm on the verses and a (too much for me) catchy chorus. But this one is not different or new at all, and when you get to the first chorus, you´ve heard the rest of the song already. But of course, I´m glad you enjoy it!

Has the potential to be a catchy tune but it just feels… unfinished and empty until it finally picks up. Last minute and a half is nice.

I’ve seen Magic mentioned a few times but at least Magic rests on a great bass line. That drum machine here… nah.

And I’m not convinced it will translate that well live.

I wouldn't compare it to a B-side considering that Gravity, Moving to Mars, Ghost Story and a number of other great Coldplay songs have been B-sides. That said I do partly agree with you about the two songs. I decided to have a listen to both songs though, and Magic has the same issues as Feels Like I'm Falling In Love. Granted it does pick up a bit earlier, but the song is almost a minute longer as well.

I understand money factors into their more pop route but i don't think that is the main reason. I just think they enjoy making pop music. I prefer their first 4 albums over any other of the modern ones but there is soul in all of their stuff. I don't think Chris Will Jonny and Guy would want to make music they don't think is worthy of being in their discography. I mean look how they talk about X&Y they don't want to perform songs they aren't proud of (even though that is like their 2nd best album). I appreciate that they are following their own path and making what they want to.

I don't like the passages with lalala:lala. we would say that they did not find the words and they fill the void

This new song not even close to surpassing my number 1 favorite of all time, ASFOS. But it did pass Magic

Yeah

But with tracks like clocks and in my place

With those kind of tracks you could also fill a stadium, but they somehow choose not to

Do you think they could write something as good as clocks and they wouldn't ? They tried with speed of sound and they ended up hating it

I didnt know that.

Interesting.

Well, Coldplay makes better pop music then most others at the moment in my opinion

So thats something.

I think a lot of people from here will probably enjoy FLIFIL in the context of the record more, like if you guys are not liking much rn. I think some of the criticism are a bit too rough like.. "oh when you know the first chorus you know all the song" I mean...yeah its a single, it is made to do that, like a lot of their singles, I mean yellow doesnt have much to offer Either and it does work so well in the record, dont try to listen to this song expecting a lot of variety, but try to focus on how good is the production and little details happening all around, this song and yellow in terms of structure are basically the same, so yeah since old times coldplay has some very simple singles on its song structures, im sure we will get more complexity on the record, so try to see the whole picture, this song might be just a little tease, the production is very nice and we have a lot of things going on in the background, so these experiments might be more Explored on the record in a more clear way, a side from that this songs works as a single, its catchy, melodic, it does has way more "oldplay" sentiment then a lot of the newplay songs since mylo, so I dont know how people are not seeing this.

Thankyou, well said, I agree 100%!

The only complaint I had was about the fact that the FLiFiL chorus reminds a little too much of Higher Power chorus the way Chris sings the words. For the rest, it's just a great single and it's promising for the record. It's already much less poppy and more chill Coldplay compared to their latest singles.

Two thoughts about the song: what a pity that the little guitar sound that plays around minute 2:50 isn't more prominent and more developed. Also, the sounds that start at minute 3:34 are very Angels & Airwaves-esques, which is a good thing.

No you can´t. You can now, completing the setlist with Paradise, ASFOS, My Universe, etc.

I like it!

My only gripes:

  • Weak bridge. Could be a guitar solo; could be a change in chord progression.
  • They never return to  "feels like i'm falling in love" after the "la la la" part. Could've been really powerful. I might make an edit of the track just to add that in.

Sounds like a mix of Magic and Higher Power. Still wish they'd release stuff like In My Place, but new Coldplay is always fun.

The weak bridge is well spotted and something that bothers me about several of Coldplay's recent singles. Coldplay songs used to have great bridges and often develop into something entirely different over the course of a few minutes. Recent singles all seem to have a sort of empty-feeling bridge that doesn't introduce a new idea, and the final chorus doesn't have an entirely fresh element either, so it feels like some of these songs go nowhere and just repeat. And mind you, I'm not against repetition in principle, some of my favorite old Coldplay songs have tons of repetition in the lyrics, but it was always accompanied by an instrumental buildup or development, and I'm missing that in their recent output.
