how hard is it to learn piano?
I'm learning as an adult and finding it very challenging. I had no experience reading music, so that's all new too. I've only had 2 months of lessons so I guess I've got a long way to go. I am enjoying it and love practicing, but stop once I become frustrated. Since this is for my own enjoyment, I feel no pressure. If I stop enjoying it, I'll quit. I'm not going to make myself crazy. I find Chuck Kotte's posts heartwarming -- maybe if I stay dedicated, it will just "click" on of these days and I'll be able to get through a piece without mistakes!

Coldplay to play Christmas Lights in the Radio 1 Live Lounge (YouTube vids in first post)
Thanks so much for recording. Beautiful. Sometimes Chris's voice can sound a bit rough in these live acoustic performances but he sounded great. Can't wait to see the vid and hear the interview!

Chris is brilliant! Besides getting everyone all excited about the actual news, he purposefully did the scribble to give us all a puzzle to keep us occupied!

Nostalgia thread part III: First concert and last concert?
Naw, I'm a complete pacifist. However, I was tempted to set them straight but feared they needed too much work.

Nostalgia thread part III: First concert and last concert?
Yes, so funny! I was once in a record store (years ago) and there were 2 youngun going through the racks and I hear one say to the other, "Oh look, Paul McCartney was in another group before Wings." :stunned:

Nostalgia thread part III: First concert and last concert?
It will be a club I'd be proud to join! :) Since we're getting all nostalgic for our teenybopper years, do you ladies remember The Cowsills? I went out and got my first little job so I could afford to plaster my walls with 16 Magazine & Teen Beat covers. :laugh3:

Nostalgia thread part III: First concert and last concert?
Well, I'm going for the title "Oldest Forumite" First concert: The Monkees (yes, those guys from the silly U.S. TV show) Last concert: Lady Gaga just last week. Next concert: Interpol in November (2nd row, baby!) Can't remember the first one I paid for.

Interpol
Funny, I experience the album the exact opposite. I think the total is way stronger that its parts. I want to hear it from start to finish and I don't cherrypick through tracks like I do with the others. Also, I don't hate OLTA. In fact, it contains some of my favorites: Pioneer, Pace & Lighthouse. But I do find myself skipping the rest of the album. I tried so hard to love it because Interpol have been my favorite band since the early days.

Interpol
I absolutely LOVE the S/T album. I am so thrilled, after being disappointed by OLTA. I will say it took multiple listenings to absorb it all. Everytime I listen, I hear something else. This was meant to be heard from beginning to end, using a good pair of headphones, following a relationship as it breaks down. Paul really laid himself bare with this one. Also, I ordered the Japanese release and I have to say the Gavelin is excellent. I was gutted when I heard it was Cubed/Mascara without lyrics because the lyrics & Paul's delivery of that classic are amazing. But Gavelin works great as an instrumental. In fact, I think it makes a perfect closer for The Undoing. Will be seeing them for the 3rd time this tour in November. Can't wait.

Coldplay's Ping Account (iTunes ) w/ New Photos / Videos From Beehive !!!! ## (please post updates f
Hey, Kids, this is FUN but don't forget...it's advertising, it's marketing, it's BUSINESS. Obviously, CP has entered into some kind of deal with Apple. They are amazing musicians but they are also shrewd businessmen. But all that aside, the fangirl in me is getting really excited because all this (plus the change in coldplay.com) indicates that they are starting their marketing campaign for #5!!

A NEW LP? What's the Plan?
Take this with a grain of salt because I don't know what I'm talking about but I imagine the band gives the record company a rough idea when to expect an album, but it's not set in stone ("X&Y"). Once it's turned over to the record company, I think it would be their decision when it's released, factoring in all their other releases. And planning a tour the magnitude of Coldplay's...well, I think my head would explode.

something to be excited about
I'm going through this right now with my other most favorite band -- Interpol, whose new album comes out in less than a month. So much fun!

The Eno Effect
Again (and succinctly, don't want a sad Colbalt), not better, just different.

The Eno Effect
Wanting to change has nothing to do with thinking their old stuff is bad. It's about getting bored with the same old thing. Should the Beatles have sung variations of "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah" their entire careers? If you listen to interviews, you will see how vast Coldplay's music interests are. How many times has Chris mentioned Tinariwen? Going out to search for a cheap tap piano? A church bell? This is a band that wants to explore other sounds, they don't want to only sing love-lost ballads. It was great but been there, done that. Coldplay's relationship with Eno isn't a "which-came-first-chicken-or-egg?" situation. It wasn't they hired Eno and they changed. It was they wanted change and hired Eno. I'll tell you one thing, if they are serious about scaling back and making their sound "smaller" for #5, I'm very curious, because Eno doesn't do small. Now, that would be change!

A NEW LP? What's the Plan?
I agree, knowing the process would be interesting but I don't think this is the place to look for answers. Obviously, these questions are for people who work in the industry, not fans. Most of us would just be speculating. I think you'd have better luck researching websites dedicated to the recording industry. In fact, you've got my curiosity up and I may do just that. Go Google!

The Eno Effect
Great post! I agree, somewhat. I agree that they will head down a different path musically, however, I don't think that is because of Eno. I think it's because they are not the 20-somethings that wrote Parachutes. They have amassed years & experiences and if they are true to themselves, as any artist should be, they are not going to revisit Parachutes. That's their past. They are looking ahead. Also another point that I think gets lost...why was Parachutes so special? Part of its appeal was because of the time it was released. They & it were so different from the other music at the time. It was a time when grunge was getting old and worn. Chris & Co. were fresh-faced and different. This happens all the time in music. I'm really excited to see what they come up with! :)

MGMT
Seeing them on Sunday. A friend caught them @ Lolla and said that he actually felt badly for them. He said that other than the big three: Kids, TTP & Electric Feet, the crowd seemed disinterested (at least where he was standing). I really hope that's not the case this weekend.

The Eno Effect
I think you are giving Eno too much credit (or blame). From what I understand, he created scenarios for the band in an attempt to make them break out of their comfort zone. That's the reason they hired him. He didn't write the music. He set the stage and made them approach their composing differently. Whether you like it or not, the band seemed much happier during the Viva years. I think they were very proud of their accomplishment, as they should be. In order to grow, you must take risks. I'd rather have a band that experiments and fails than one that sits safely on their laurels, never reaching for the extraordinary. They are artists. Artists must create. Coldplay are in the fortunate place where they have the luxury of creating for the sake of creating. They don't have to pander to the masses. Kudos to them. If I've one criticism about the Viva years, it's all of Chris's acrobatics. I know he is trying to carry big arenas, but his voice often suffered because he was out of breath. I'd prefer less theatrics and let the music carry the message. It's good enough to do that -- Parachutes to Viva.
