How Emma Thompson's mother got back her gargoyles after using Harry Potter curse on thief By Liz Thomas Last updated at 1:42 AM on 25th September 2009 Comments (25) Add to My Stories Perhaps Emma Thompson should take a few tips from her mother next time she plays Hogwarts teacher Sybil Trelawney. Certainly 77-year-old Phyllida Law would appear to have more success in the practice of witchcraft than the scatty divination teacher played by her daughter in the Harry Potter movies. She managed to confound thieves by placing a curse upon them. Happy ending: Emma Thompson with her gargoyle-owning mother Phyllida Law Miss Law warned ra…

The hornets with a sting like 'a hot nail entering the body' could be on their way to Britain By Mail On Sunday Reporter Last updated at 11:58 PM on 26th September 2009 Comments (0) Add to My Stories Swarms of Asian hornets may be on their way to Britain after attempts to trap and poison them in France failed. Vespa velutina, which can grow to 1.8in and has a wingspan of 3in, inflicts a bite that has been compared to a hot nail entering the body. The hornets arrived in France in a shipment of Chinese pottery in late 2004. Their survival and spread has been linked to global warming. Nasty bite: The Vespa velutina hornet arrived in a Chin…

Feathered fossils prove birds evolved from dinosaurs, say Chinese scientists By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 7:13 PM on 25th September 2009 Comments (45) Add to My Stories A new species of feathered dinosaurs provides hard evidence the prehistoric creatures evolved into birds, a group of Chinese scientists has claimed. The team - lead by the man dubbed the 'real-life Indiana Jones' - say the fossils represent five different species from two different rock sequences in north-eastern China. All the species have feathers or feather-like structures. The new finds are 'indisputably' older than archaeopteryx, the oldest known bird, which sc…

Army of spiders on the march in UK homes thanks to warmer weather By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 4:56 PM on 25th September 2009 Comments (56) Add to My Stories If you're not a fan of our eight-legged friends, look away now - it's the news that will have arachnaphobics quaking with fear. We may not have seen the promised 'barbecue summer', but the past year's weather could make this a bumper season for some of the creepy crawly residents of our homes and gardens, conservationists said today. Wildlife charity Buglife is hopeful that spiders and crane flies - also known as daddy long legs - will have benefited from the more temperate wea…

The Left Is Right — Taxes Are a Moral Issue It is too bad that libertarians and conservatives rarely take on the left on moral grounds because the left's moral foundations are as weak as their economic foundations. One principle that all those on the left hold is that taxes constitute more than an economic issue; they are, first and foremost, a moral one. Economists on the left may argue for higher taxes on economic grounds but they and we know that at bottom, higher taxes, especially “taxing the rich,” is what they believe morality demands. For example, there are obviously only two possible ways to reduce government deficits: reduce spending or increase taxes (…

You can throw a few trillion at the problem, legalize accounting fraud and manipulate numbers and in the short term things will "improve" but they cause the underlying problems to get worse NOT better in the long term. And they will come back because lying and manipulation do not fix problems, you cannot sweep things under the rug and say everything is going to be fine. http://market-ticker.org/archives/1466-But-I-Thought-The-Economy-Was-Improving.html http://market-ticker.org/archives/1466-But-I-Thought-The-Economy-Was-Improving.html

New York plans to ban smoking in public parks and outdoor spaces By Annette Witheridge Last updated at 10:22 PM on 15th September 2009 Comments (111) Add to My Stories Smokers could be banned from lighting up outside in some areas of New York. The city banned smoking in public buildings six years ago. It was so successful that Britain and many other European countries followed suit. Officials in New York now hope to extend the ban to the city's 1,700 parks and seven beaches. Since July 2007 smokers in Britain have been banned from smoking in enclosed public spaces Health Commissioner Dr Thomas Farley said the proposal was part of …

Boycott the Glenn Beck Boycott! If this were Canada or Europe, crushing a right-winger would be a snap: all you have to do is haul him before a “human rights tribunal” (packed, of course, with ultra-leftist judges), accuse him of “racial hatred,” and off to jail he goes. Boycott the Glenn Beck Boycott! With the Obama administration leading the charge, multicultural elites are joining forces to silence conservative Fox News commentator Glenn Beck. It’s time for Americans of all political persuasions to fight back against this blatant attack on the Constitutional principle of free speech. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125329467451823485.html This is the beginning of the end of the internet's freedom from political manipulation. When all ISPs are required to behave in the same way, there is no substantive difference between them. This will stagnate growth and innovation in the internet. In freedom and capitalism, you have to take the bad with the good - it encourages change. In socialism, everyone has an equally shitty existence - including your grandchildren. An analogy would be government regulation on vehicles. With all the rules, car manufacturers have basically been making the same cars for the last 50 years, but with very minor changes …
