I'm overjoyed to finally be able to see Bloc Party live. I've heard so much about how energetic they are onstage. They are my number one at Lollapalooza ( even beating out Radiohead!)

Also. Kele makes me heart flutter.

10 times! Oh wow. I'm bowing down to you!!! That's madness but obviously you loved it!

Oh I can't wait to dance around. It's been so long since I've been to a proper FUN gig. And I adore them so much each time I listen to old or new songs I get this epic vibe from it. And to see it live has to be 500 billion times better!

Ah I have to run now though. Take care hun. I need to get on here more often!

Eeee! Bloc Party in Halifax! And I've got my ticket.

And no one will go with me because they're all like "well I don't really know who they are" or "I don't know any of their songs" and just think I'm a bit crazy for being excited. Boo. :(

edit: Whoa... totally sold out in no time at all, and they had to add a second day. Figures- the Marquee is so itty bitty tiny.

Has anyone else heard their new song?

(radio 1- http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/zanelowe/ )

I don't think I like it, like I like Silent Alarm's songs... it seems too dancey. and just not serious enough. :( I'm a bit disappointed...... :\

I guess the more I listen to, the better it sounds....the horns are quite fun.

EDIT; I'm liking it more and more and more ahahahahahahaha!!

nothing beats SA though

I have to say....it has grown on me!

Its so hypnotic..... I'm a little bit disappointed they seem to have completely abandoned the sound that made them famous... but I'm liking the song a lot more, with every listen.

It's kinda crazy! Apparently, the 'mercury in retrograde' is a reference to something to do with the planet Mercury and science and going backwards before you go forwards or something similar?!??!

It makes a bit more sense now.... sort of...

I like it, and i know its just going to be this one song like this.

Their just trying to push their musical boundaries with these songs; Flux, and Mercury.

Their new album should come out by the end of the year, or early next year.

Also, there's a B-side to Mercury, "Idea For A Story." Comes out August 11th.

"Mercury's in retrograde" would refer to a retrograde rotation, where a planet rotates opposite to the direction it revolves around the Sun. (This could refer to any celestial body...moons, etc.) Venus is the only planet that actually has a retrograde rotation. Just think of it spinning backwards. Hence, Mercury doesn't rotate in a retrograde fashion, making the statement that everything is essentially really screwed up. Hope that helps! :laugh4: /sciencegeekrant

As to the song itself, I was kind of on the fence about Mercury for a while, but it's seriously grown on me. At first, I felt it was a little bit too much like a Kele solo single. After a couple listens though, I really like the lyrics and the meaning behind them and the electronic style is actually really working for me. It's going to be interesting to see how the rest of the album pans out, whether it's going to be all like this Mercury/Flux style or that of Silent Alarm or a mixture of both.

Who knows? Maybe they've switched it up entirely. Think this could end up being Bloc Party's Kid A?

Bloc Party vocalist Kele Okereke was subjected to a racist attack at the weekend, by former Sex Pistols screamer John 'Johnny Rotten' Lydon and members of the one-time punk hero's entourage.

Okereke was attacked at the Summercase Festival in Barcelona on Saturday night; he was left shaken and with bruising to his face, cuts on his face and body, and a burst lip.

The attack, according to reports, was unprovoked. A witness commented that Lydon and company were at the festival "acting like a gang of racist thugs".

Trouble flared when Okereke asked Lydon backstage at the festival if he'd ever consider reforming Public Image Ltd, as the Bloc Party singer is a big fan of the seminal post-punk outfit fronted by Lydon. The former I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here contestant grew aggressive, suggesting that Okereke had a "black attitude", and that was a problem in some way.

The story goes that then Okereke was punched and kicked by Lydon's crew, albeit not Lydon himself, while Ricky Wilson of Kaiser Chiefs and Yannis Philippakis of Foals attempted to fend off the attackers. Security broke up the fight and Spanish police were duly informed. Okereke made a statement to UK police once home.

Over 50 people witnessed the Barcelona attack - alongside members of Foals and Kaiser Chiefs were Mystery Jets, Neon Neon and Har Mar Superstar, all of whom saw what unfolded. Of the attack, Okereke has stated:

"It's not an issue of the physical assault, even though it was an unprovoked attack. It is the fact that race was brought into the matter so readily. Someone as respected and as intelligent as Lydon should know better than to bring race into the equation, or socialise with and encourage those who hold such narrow-minded attitudes. I am disappointed that someone I held with such high regard turns out to be such a bigot."
