U2

I was at the Oslo concert 27th of July. Definatley one of the things I will always remember. I was all the way in front, and shook Bono's hand, I was in shock. It was unbelievable! :D

Ra-d,

Thanks for the response. As for my favorite U2 album, it would have to be Joshua Tree. That album is amazing. And I think Bono and his band are just genius. Same as Coldplay their newest album is in my own personal opinion their best.

Kevin

Octakon: Love the avatar, would you mind if I were to use it myself elsewhere?

First off, WAR... best album. For me, its simple, 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' best U2 song, as with the other 9 songs (New years Day, etc.)

Now as for the whole u2 and coldplay come from other bands.. dude, of course they do! In the end, every single band comes from some chain/combo of musical styles all the way back to the birth of music (probably when caveman smacked rocks together and invented drums ;) ). That's how I see it, I don't think you can cut down u2 and coldplay (if you were) for not having their own sound. Anyways, just thought id let that out.

thanks seeya.

I'm a U2 fan... hehe...

I'm absolutely PSYCHED! In exactly one week from tomorrow I'll be General Admission at the Garden, in Boston!!!! I scored really well priced tickets off ebay last night and I'm still on cloud 9.

U2's my favorite band, next to Coldplay. I really like that Dylan/Guthrie analogy there for Coldplay/U2. I HATE when people compare them. It's like forcing a mother to choose between her 2 children which is a favorite. And I don't think Coldplay will ever surpass U2. Not in my mind at least. That being said, they sure can tie... ;) But yes, Coldplay is not better than U2, nor vice versa. They seem to unconciously play off each other. More Coldplay off U2, of course (since U2 doesn't NEED anyone to play off anymore, obviously). But yeah.

Hi. I'm rambling.

So. Back to what I was saying... Um... Yeah. Next week. U2. General Admission. The only problem is I don't know what time I should get there to start queuing up! I heard people camp overnight in the parking lots :o I'd be willing to do it, but I've got my old fart mother in tow... Anyone been to a GA show in the states, any tips? This isn't my first U2 show but wow, it'll be my first one on the floor!!!!

Yep. I'm excited and letting out all my U2-y excitement here :P

My fave U2 album seems to be Achtung Baby. It's the only album of EVERY artist I like that I can listen to completely through, then do it again. And no, it's not just because of "One" I've grown pretty fond of Pop lately, as well.

Right. That was a damn long comment. I better get tons of bling for this! :idea2: :P

this is totally irrational to be saying it in this thread but.......IMO

I dont like U2 and i dont think they are as talented as everyone says they are

Bono's voice is so plain and tasteless--so blahhhh that doesnt call my attention

I think if U2 and Coldplay would have come out exactly at the same time---Coldplay would have been more successful and more liked than U2

U2 only has lots of fans cause back there---they were the only band with their style and sound---and that is why alot of people followed them, but if they would have come out around this time---there would be nothing special or great about them---unlike Coldplay

and let me calrify--before everyone starts to jump on me--this is not a U2 vs. Coldplay thing

I just think U2 is way less talented than what people say they are---i dont find what all the fuzz is about

Don't worry, I wont be hatin'! Differences in taste and opinion are what make the world go round, afterall!

It's just weird that you bring that up, because seriously. About a year and a half ago I thought the SAME exact thing! :o Thinking back on it now, it freaks me out, but really. I hated U2. Go figure. I don't know why I hated them either... It's just interesting for me to think back on it and notice how different my opinion towards them became.

It's tough because I think that to really strongly dislike something (or strongly like, for that matter!) you need to have given it a good try. It's like saying "I fuckin' hate SUV's. They're horrible to drive!" if you've never taken one for a spin. It's the same with politics. I've liked Bush. I went through the republican phase. I went through an anarchist phase. I went through a democrat phase. I went through a socialist phase. I've been on all sides of the coin (never really taken communism for a ride though :o ). It helps having done that when I get into a political debate, because I know where people are coming from. I realised that I was talking about hating U2 a year ago and I never even listened to them. It was just that bloody song about Sunday that I knew  Oh, and friggin' Vertigo playing on the radio 24/7.... :stunned: That drove me up a wall.

But, (wow sorry for my ramblings, I can't keep myself on one clear train of thought tonight!) back to my point. I learned my lesson that I can't talk about hating a band until I've listened to them. And more than one song, or one album, at that. It's probably why I only like a few bands, I just don't have the attention span to really try out too many!

Ah, don't think I'm jumping down your throat or anything! Really, I'm not! I've just got that initial primal motherly instinct (or whatever?) to protect my band  God knows, a year ago I'd have to protect them from myself.

Don't get mad at me :/ :bigcry:

I listen to you---but trust me, i have given them lots of tries--i only like one song and its "vertigo" and thats cause its catchy----but trust me, i have tried to like them, to see what the big deal about U2 is about---but i just cant

my bf is a big, and i mean BIG fan of U2---has all the cd's---listens to them all the time, and i just dont see what the big deal is about---his voice is just so plain, so blah, not unique, and the songs are just whatever

i have heard songs in the radio of U2, and i cant even tell if its them or some other new, or random band out there----his voice is so tasteless----unlike coldplay----even a non-fan would recognize a coldplay song----chris's voice is unique and smooth, and just awsome

i just try and try to like it, so that i can share that apreciation with my bf, but i just dont see the fuzz

i just dont think they are as talented as everyone says they are

(i went rambling too--did u see that---i tried not to, but its hard)

LOL! Just kidding! I understand, I have the same problem with a lot of bands other people like. So I get where you're coming from :P

 :rolleyes4:

hmmm well i wish i would of gotten floor tickets but i didnt.......im like on the level of seats right nest to the floor at the back of the stadium

if you have a Fuse(channel, it used to be called mmusa), tune in! they are playing a special on U2...its on!!!!!! ahh!!!!!!!!!!!!! its too exciting! :D its called 100 percent!

lilchick,

To say U2 does not have a unique voice. Care to share who he sounds like. Because his voice is very unique in my opinion and I think many U2 fans would tell you the same. And you don't have to be a U2 fan to know that his voice is not sounding like anyone else's. Sometimes a unique voice gets allot of negative attention. Or should I say many people who will say they can't stand their music. That happens with singers who have unique voices. They know very well they are not going to amuse everyone in the world. Isn't it funny how Bono, Chris and Dylan all get that same attention. People who can't stand their music, and those same people who say they can't sing.

What I notice about Bono's voice is the fact he changes pitches allot more then Chris Martin. Not to mention Bono and The Edge who sometimes sing together, blow away any duet in Coldplay. I mean I'm just speaking facts here. Based on status in the music industry. Coldplay will have their turn someday I'm sure. And there will be another Coldplay coming up behind them trying to claim their spot. That's just the way it goes.

NOW to be very honest. I think having the conversation of which band is better, should not really be relevant. Both bands exist and their pleasing an audience. Their doing what they love. We all know who we like and who we don't. Some like both bands, some just like the one. I'm a fan of both. I mostly only think in terms as who is best when people start asking the question. Let's just like what we like, listen to what we like and don't argue if someone doesn't. It is pointless. :-)

Just LOVE the MUSIC. How would we evolved without it, right? ;)

Kevin

Like i said, i never meant to compare U2 with Coldplay---I hate comparing Coldplay to anybody---it was just an example of why i dont like U2

and--like you said, lets just like what we like...... I know---i was just expressing what i felt about U2 because it has been troubling me for a while--and if i said what i said--was not to say that liking U2 is bad, but its to ask that you guys help me see what you guys see in them, cause i just dont see anything special about U2---I wanna like them too, I really do, and I have tried--I wanna share this with my bf--but i just hate the fact that everyone puts them on a very high standard, when to me, they are not---so if u can help me like them and see whats so "great" about them---I'm open for suggestions

oh, and i did a little experiment to prove my point to my bf-----I played a part of a Coldplay songs to my little cousin who has never ever heard either band before------then I played a U2 song to him

Then I played several songs by other bands and I told him to identify who is Coldplay and who is U2---and he actually could not recognize U2 from the other bands--and just had to guess

ofcourse its all shit experimenting--and has no relevance---but just affirmed my point

how...."little" is your cousin cause i dont think little kids would be that good at that

lol yeah

anyways lilchick I like that you are trying to like U2 because of your bf, evn though you think they're overrated or whatever. To me, the lyrics of Bono speak the most to me as a person who has problems with life and everything else. As a musician, the Edge's distinct style of play sets him apart from anyone else out there, though he'll never be compared to Hendrix, Clapton, Page, just because he's much different from them.

As for the actual music, I am surprised you don't like their singles. Have you heard their Joshua Tree singles? They're magnificent...

Anyways it is true if Coldplay and U2 both started at the same time, Coldplay would be much more popular considering the strength of their hit single "Yellow", which U2 lacked on their debut album. Although that album was critically acclaimed and ranked in Rolling Stone's Top 500 albums of all time.

Btw I'm seeing them for the first time ever next month in Los Angeles, very excited heh

My little cousin is 12 and i know he doesnt know much about music-but that wasnt the point---the point was to see who has a more original and distinctive voice: Bono or Chris

but, anyways---U2 are coming to Los Angeles??? wow, i might buy tickets to surprise my bf---that would be a good idea

oh, and i find it tiring that in alot shows they play nothing but U2 songs---it use to be in Friends, and other shows but now i'm seeing it alot in Entourage :/ ---I just try to but i dong get it

They are both good bands but for me they are very different. I was listening to them 15 years ago and they are still putting out some good stuff!! Let's hope coldplay gets to that age and still puts out good shit :)

  • 2 weeks later...

U2 have a lot of good albums. The Joshua Tree deserves all the acclaim it got, but it's far from their best. War was easily their first great album and 40 is probably my favourite song by them, but (I know you might find this as a bit of a surprise) I think that nothing ever compares to All That You Can't Leave Behind. Nobody said a comeback album can't be an artist's best, and it's true for U2. Most people think the only good song on there is Beautiful Day, but pretty much the whole album is stock full of singles. Stuck In A Moment is a really good ballad, Elevation is another great rocker, and the whole album proceeds in this manner, one good song after another climaxed by New York.
