Coldplay play tribute to the Socceroos

Saturday Jun 24 09:39 AEST

Coldplay (AAP)

British supergroup Coldplay charmed Australian fans with a tribute to the Socceroos and a Shane Warne joke when they opened the Down Under leg of their world tour in Brisbane.

Engaging frontman Chris Martin donned a Socceroos' scarf and marvelled at Australia's sporting credentials as Coldplay won over 12,000 enthusiastic fans at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

"As English people we just have to ask is there anything you can't do?" he said. "The answer is 'no'."

In tribute to Australia's qualification for the second round of the World Cup following the 2-2 draw with Croatia, Martin changed a verse in the song Politik, singing "Give Harry Kewell Australia's second goal".

Introducing the song God Put A Smile On Your Face, Martin - a keen follower of England's soccer team - said he hoped Australians would be smiling after the Socceroos next match against Italy.

The energetic Martin brought Australia's Test cricket world-record holding leg spin bowler Warne into the act by saying "it's hotter up here than a Shane Warne text message".

Fans were treated to songs from Coldplay's three albums, including their first international hit Yellow complete with giant yellow balloons, and also a Johnny Cash tribute with a performance of Ring of Fire.

Aiming to rival Irish rockers U2 as the world's top band, Coldplay are making their first major concert tour of Australia since initially coming Down Under for Big Day Out in 2001.

They were last in Australia three years ago for the Splendour in the Grass festival at Byron Bay.

This time they are packing out concert venues around the country and their act features a spectacular laser light show, panoramic video screens and computer graphic projection.

Songs from their last offering X&Y - the world's biggest selling album last year - sounded far superior live than on record, particularly Talk and Swallowed In The Sea.

The rhythm section of drummer Will Champion and bass player Guy Berryman packed far more of a punch live than on the X&Y album while Jonny Buckland lived up to his reputation as one of the world's best lead guitarists.

Fans lapped up the major hits such as Clocks and In My Place and the three song encore closed with Fix You - the band's favourite track from their current album and a stirring concert finale.

Coldplay, who are supported by Sydney band Youth Group - enjoying success with their cover of Forever Young - will perform three times at the Sydney Entertainment Centre next week.

The band, who formed at London's University College eight years ago, also plays the first of three shows at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena next Saturday before travelling to Adelaide and Perth the following week.

The charismatic Martin - married to Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow - is also due to appear on Andrew Denton's ABC TV talkshow Enough Rope on July 3.

ah i knew theyd do that :-) and yay chris is on denton! i was really hoping he would be, thats so awesome.

awwwwwww i knew they'd change politik for the socceroooos. what cuties. man i can't wait!!!!

thats so cool!! hope he does that in perth too

i just saw them last night and holy shit that is by far the best show they have ever produced......

i loved the little puns and chris's prancing around onstage!!!! it was AWESOME

at one point in the show chris ran through the audience while everyone was trying to grab him like a bit of meat. Jonny= fucking hottest englishman ever!!! the way he owned the guitar was amazing. guy was looking cool as always and will was just CHAMPION!!!!

the visual effects were really impressive like the huge screen with the numbers counting down, and the compterised chris martin. im still in awe of it all!!!!!

swallowed in the sea bought a tear to my eye, while talk and in my place bought the crowd up!!

ah im so excited for tuesday now!

and youth group too! its like my favourite band playing plus youth group which are just fucking awesome in one night. oh im so excited.

I'm fucking excited. I shall be seeing them on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

I have been waiting for such a long time for this moment. I bet when it comes- I won't know how to react.

WOO! this is so exciting! 2 days bon and callum! anyone else going on tuesday?

i was so annoyed, my parents said that thing on coldplays brisbane concert was on the news just before i got home :(

i cant believe he will be on denton! arrrrgh!

bon, what time are you getting there? i dont know when lol...

  • Author

loll i don't know what time either. damn i'm sooo frikken excited. eeeeeeek.

brooke sounds like you had such a great time. mannnnn. this is so excitiiiinnngggg. eeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

Oh my fucking God I can die very happy now lol. I've lost my voice completely! They were SO energetic and Chris was so funny! But the crowd on Friday night SUCKED!

But last night was absolutely awesome... me and my friend caught the wrong train, ended up on the other side of Brisbane, cried cause we thought we had no chance of getting there on time but ended up right at the front barrier for the concert! Literally 2 meters away from the stage lol.

It was funny when Yellow was finishing Chris held the last note note of "you" for ages, and was like 'I'm not finishing the song until that last balloon pops!' and stood there with a straight face and his arms folded until it popped then when 'YEAH! "do". Was so cute!

He changed the lyrics of God Put A Smile Upon Your Face too, something about ill, then Brazil, I didn't catch it lol.

ALMOST caught Guy's camera too, the guy infront grabbed it!! So pissed off about that! And during In My Place Chris ran right to us and was like 'How you going over here? 'Ello! 'Ello!' then ran round the back it was so cute. Almost touched him but he's a fast little bugger lol.

AND for the encore we got a full band version of Trouble which was AWESOME! The night before we got Swallowed In The Sea.

All in all you guys are going to have the best time, they are absolutely amazing!

Oh my gosh... I'm even more pumped for Tuesday night now! Wow! The day after tomorrow! I'm going to be off my head with delirious excitement at school all week! I'm nowhere near the stage and I'm so excited... I'm third row from the back in silver seating... but at least my section is right infront of the stage... it's not on an angle or anything.. Still... Woohoo!

Oh, and on Tuesday morning/Monday night it's the Australia vs Italy game, whihc means people going to the Tuesday night concert are likely to get soccer references too.

Brisbane 23 and 24 June

This is coming from someone who a) has only started getting into Coldplay after seeing the Speed of Sound vid a few months ago and b) happens to think that Parachutes and Yellow in particular are pretty crap, so hopefully it's a bit more of an objective review.....

Brisbane Friday 23 - sat in the rhs of the entertainment centre, good seat, great view and all that. Pros - great set, sound, and light show. Cons - the band seemed to be going thru' the motions (almost identical set from the Jan 06 Seattle shows) and most of the crowd around seemed to be there just for the sake of seeing the band and weren't all that enthusiatic. A lot of folded arms and sms's being sent to friends during the show, jeez.... Overall rating: a disappointing 7/10, made up of 8/10 for band effort/lighting/set and 6/10 audience response.

Brisbane Saturday 24 - tracked down tickets thru' ebay for the mosh-pit. What a huge difference. Close to the stage and a whole different perspective. Ok, the set was pretty much the same but you could see that the band - especially Chris - was really cranking things up, so the crowd was far more responsive, so the band then gave even more - a case of one feeding off the other's enthusiasm. Chris strutted around, head-banged the keyboards and rocked on his seat, Jonny belted out some great riffs, Will beat the hell out of drums and Guy kicked out the bass lines. Pros - haunting versions of The Scientist and Fix You, full-on performances of the big tracks like Speed of Sound, Talk and Clocks, and great audience response. Cons - no real variation in the set.

Ok, big statement coming now - straight up, I reckon Saturday night's show was the best gig I've EVER been to with the overall highlight being Fix You - what a way to end the show and it amost bordered on the emotional. Fantastic stuff. But then again, if you're watching the show from a comfy seat or way from the back then you'll maybe miss what it's all about. Get yourselves into the Coldplay mosh-pit and you'll have the time or your life!

great reviews both of you! im much more excited now if i possibly can be :D

sucked that friday audience was crap :( wonder why :( but you both got to go to both shows so thats good!

bon we'll make sure we give them all our love!

it was so funny yesterday, i thought this guy on the bus was will! i was like whoa and he mightve noticed :D he got off at my stop and he went in the direction i was going. it was really similar - he had a beanie, the stubble, he walked the same as far as i can remember... (i remember he had a blue satchel and a energy drink as well :D )

i half followed him until i really had to turn to get where i was going n i didnt get a good look of his face cuz he was always infront...

oh and he was going in the direction of the sydney entertainment centre...

but anyway it couldnt of been him cuz he would be playing that night in brisbane! it was exciting anyway :D

I'll be in GA on Wednesday Night. Contemplating buying tickets to Tuesday Night's concert too. Damn I love Coldplay.

awww bon, will look-a-like.

on tuesday night, we're going to stalk them, okay? :sneaky: hahaha.

oh man.

i'm going to rape guy.

:uhoh2:

So close...

On July 4th, 2005, I saw Coldplay live at the massive Reebok Stadium in Bolton, England. I was back home on a two month trip then, and had the time of my life.

On July 2nd and July 3rd, 2006, I'll see them again (I wonder if they'll have a concert on July 5th next year :D). Although I'm not quite as excited as last year for various reasons (none relating to the band, but moreso because I don't think the atmosphere of Bolton will be recreated, and they won't shoot the official video for Fix You!), I can't wait to see them again. They could be some of the last events of my 11 year stay in Australia, as I will be moving home soon, so hopefully it can be memorable!

Well tonight is the night omg omg omg!!! I have had tix since last year for Wednesday night but it was my bday on friday and one of my friends gave me money to buy more tix on ebay and so two days ago I got tix for tonights concert. I am so glad I get to go to two, from what I read I wont be disappointed and being able to see them twice will be brilliant. I'm so restless right now. 7 hours to go!!!! I'm going to watch their dvd right now, then my friend is dying my hair, then I'm off to the city and my friend is buying me dinner for my bday, then Coldplay then into the city for the Socceroos match.....what a night!!!!!:D:D

Have fun at (whoever is going) the concert tonight! I thought it was FANTASTIC on Saturday. Post some reviews once you go!

wwwow exciting.

aw razors_girl sounds like you're going to have an absolutely amazing birthday! lucky you :nice:

i'm supposed to be at tonights concert... but i'm not :disappointed:

I think I may have already asked this on another thread but I can't find it anymore so are cameras allowed in? I really wanna take some photos!

Aww, how come you aren't going anymore?

I bought my camera along, but they said I couldn't take it in. I think, if you take it, and get there early, you'll have time to put it back in your car if they say no. But yeah, I'll say take it, incase you can take it in.

I don't understand why they didn't let us take the cameras in.

my friend won free tickets so she gave one to me for tonights concert. i bought tickets for tuesday too. because... coldplay fans do that. haha.

and then she messaged me on friday night and asked if she could take someone else because they wanted to go, which caught me off guard as it was like 2 nights before... and so yeah... they're not my tickets so i can't exactly say "takeee meee" so i'm here. :disappointed: hahaha

awww, but oh well, I'm sure Tuesday will be just as great! I'm just excited to hear the reviews :p

Lucky them for winning the tickets though.
