September 22, 201114 yr They'll be back when tour promotors start throwing insane money at them to reunite. It might not be for awhile, but I bet anything they will play again. Until then, it's kind of a bummer.
September 22, 201114 yr ...i didn't realise they were still together The Wrong Child? (i think it's that one) is one of my favourite songs of all time probably i haven't listened to it in years
September 22, 201114 yr I'm probably going to sound like a dick here, but why are you guys so upset? a very old, not very interesting, not extremely active band broke up and you guys are reacting like it's the end of the music??? I don't get it. I mean...one of my favourite bands, Brains, broke up earlier this year, just after they released their incredible debut album and did a nationwide tour. This was a huge shock to me. No one was expecting this. They're a young band and they hadn't really gotten anywhere yet. But R.E.M are 30 years old and they have had huge successes quite a few times. They had to break up someday right???? hggf, sorry if i 'offended' you or anything but wtf?

You sound very ignorant. While REM's recent output doesn't compare to their earlier work, there is no doubt about the band's contribution to music. There's a reason why bands like Nirvana, Pavement and Radiohead all hail REM as a major influence on their own music. Here's a suggestion: go get a copy of Automatic for the People and really listen to the songs. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRFFNSgo_N8]R.E.M. - Nightswimming - YouTube[/ame]

It's 20 years old, man :\ If Radiohead broke up today, that would be a huge shock. Because they're still relevant in the music scene and trying new things. REM were still making the same boring rock music they had been doing for 30 years. Them breaking up was not a huge loss for music.
September 22, 201114 yr R.E.M. were still trying new things. Just listen to all 15 of their albums and come back. Oh, and 15 albums proves they were constantly active. They never lived it down and always delivered. No other band can lay claim to that.
September 22, 201114 yr People are sad whenever it's the end of an era, especially for a band that's been together as long and accomplished as much as REM. It's that simple.
September 22, 201114 yr Was a huge REM fan back in my day...have most of their albums. My favorites were Monster and Automatic for the People. I was bummed to hear they decided to split after releasing Collapse Into Now. I think it's a great album, even though I don't own it....yet. But, I tend to agree with bjaiken. I look for a reunion...probably not soon, but at some point.
September 23, 201114 yr Just got the news. This certainly is a "Bad Day". -minus the shit so thick you could stir it with a stick part :laugh3:
September 25, 201114 yr sad news So sad to hear this news, but life goes on and I wish them all the best. Collapse Into Now is a great final album.

Son you've got to learn to pull your big head out of your arse sometime. And who gives two shits about Brains but you? At least bring out an example which is relevant rather than you just showing off how hip you are...again. Cringeworthy cack bollocks mate. It would also help if you weren't a massive bore but hey not much can be done about that.
February 1, 201214 yr At My Most Beautiful is the single greatest song ever written. Ps sorry CP Is Up your favorite post-Berry REM album?
February 1, 201214 yr Is Up your favorite post-Berry REM album? Ummm I like around the sun and collapse into now but I would have to saaaaayyyyy, yes. At My Most Beautiful, the Apologist, Diminished, and Why Not Smile are some of their most beautiful melodic songs.

At My Most Beautiful, the Apologist, Diminished, and Why Not Smile are some of their most beautiful melodic songs. I agree. All the Way to Reno and Imitation of Life are solid too in my opinion. Don't love Around the Sun but I was happy with them ending things on Accelerate / Collapse Into Now. I thought it was a strong finish to an amazing career.
February 1, 201214 yr All the Way to Reno and Imitation of Life both being off of Reveal of course. Yeah I like imitatation, she just wants to be, ive been high, and ill take the rain from that one.
