It is a very sad day for music today. They were a great band. Go listen their latest album, Collapse into Now. It is a masterpiece. I bet it will be on my list of top 10 albums of 2011.

One of my favorite bands! Just amazing people making amazing music... Very sad to discover this.. Nightswimming and Man on the moon were my favorites.. I loved almost all of their stuff, Old and new...

I'm genuinely gutted about this split. When Oasis split two years ago I knew something better would come out of it (Noel Gallagher solo) but this is 10 times more devastating. Their last record Collapse Into Now was a fine departure for the band which included one of their best ever songs in my opinion, which was Uberlin. I was so keen to see this band live but now that won't be happening.

 

Good luck to them in whatever they decide to do in the future. They've earnt their place in the history of world music.

A lot of bands can be huge for 5 years. A few more can be big for 10 years...

 

REM went beyond all of that. They were giants for 30 years and they spent those 30 years consistently releasing new music. They didn't pull the old trick that some bands do where they split up or take 8 years between albums then come back and act like they never left. Sure there were highs and lows but they lived that band for every one of those 30 years and that to me is what makes them so special. No new drummer or bass player every two or three albums. Just four guys... and then three... who started making music together and decided to spend their lives that way.

 

Absolute legends, true icons, in a time where any band with two hit albums under their belt are given that title all too easily.

It's really sad, but if their heart isnt in it, then I respect that. It shows that it's not about money. You should always leave while you're ahead.

My brother told me about this a couple of hours ago, i'm quite shocked. I've never been a fan of them but I really liked their stuff, they will be missed for sure! It's sad when one of the biggest names of music says goodbye :( We'll miss you R.E.M!!
