The Big Razz Interview Exclusive Coldplay's Album Must Live Up To 'Greatest' Tag THREE years ago Coldplay singer Chris Martin told the Record their fourth album would be "the greatest piece of music ever made". Thirteen days from now the world will find out asViva La Vida or Death And All His Friends is released on a Thursday no less. The last time a huge Brit band did this was Oasis in 1997. The Britpop group released Be Here Now on a Thursday and clocked up record sales of 700,000 in the three days before the Sunday chart. Coldplay claim not to be following the Gallagher brothers by making sure the album is out on the same day around Europe. Two million people downloaded current singleViolet Hill when it was released for free but let's hope the rest of Viva LaVida isn't the disappointment Be Here Now turned out to be. The group - Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion - have certainly tried everything to live up to Chris's grand statement. Guy, 30, the Kirkcaldy-born bassist reveals they even made a song under hypnosis. He said: "I was trying to give up smoking. I suggested to Brian (Eno, who produced the album) that I might try a hypnotherapist and Brian said'oh well, I was at art college with this guy who's now a hypnotherapist and I could give you his number'. I thought 'ok, well maybe I'll try that'. "And then I suggested"why don't we get him to come into the studio and hypnotise us all and see what happens". "Brian loved the idea and we tried it. "We did but it wasn't really like '1,2,3, you're under'. It was more a kind of relaxing hypnosis. "When we went down and played, it was just a sort of long, ambient piece that resulted. "I'm not sure if it'll ever see the light of day to be honest, but it exists." And the smoking? The bassist grinned:"Sorry to say that I still smoke and that we didn't really achieve anything from the hypnosis process musically. But you know, if you don't try things then you don't know if they're gonna work." While Guy may still be a smoker, the band are the polar opposites of Amy Winehouse or Pete Doherty.Their three previous albums Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002) and X&Y (2005) ploughed the middle of the road epic indie ground created by Travis and their private lives seemed to be like that, too. Hard-working and conscientious Coldplay never missed dates or appeared wasted in pictures. Today at 9.30am tickets for the band's UK tour go on sale.There are two Glasgow SECC dates on December 5 and 6. By then they'll have been on the road for half a year. They play Brixton Academy on June 16 before going to Barcelona and then touring America and Canada through June, July and August. Then they move on to Japan, through Europe, before going back to Canada and America in October and November. They hit Britain in December and finish in Belfast on December 18. Their record label depend on them for their shareholders, hundreds of people depend on them for jobs on tour. Coldplay are as much a brand as rock group. Guy, who split last year from his wif Joanna six months after the birth of their daughter Nico, reckons the band have managed to stay grounded, although he shrugged "who knows" i was helped by his upbringing - first i Scotland and then when he was 12 when he moved to Kent. Early stories about the band claim there were two rules - first, they shar profits equally, and second, use hard drugs and you're fired, period. Guy said: "I don't know where that came from. We don't really have any rules. The important thing is just our relationships. "And that we all work hard and that we all put as much into everything as we possibly can but there isn't some sort of guide book as to what you can and can't do. There's no Coldplay law." While Coldplay tried hypnotherapy as an altered state other bands such as The Beatles used drugs, but that's a no-no right? Guy said: "I always think if you've been taking acid and make music then that music will only make sense when you're on acid. Quite often if you get stoned and write something, or if you get drunk and write something, the chances are you're not gonna enjoy it so much when you wake up in the morning and you're not in an altered state. "Worth an estimated £25 million and aged only 30 it's perhaps incredible that Guy or any of the band aren't big party animals. X&Y was the biggest selling album of 2005, shifting 8.3 million copies and put them into the U2 league of supergroups. There could be rivalry between the Brit band and the Irish band. Guy admits Bono has given them his"talks". Like Elton John it seems the singer likes to give out advice to younger musicians. The bassist laughed:"I remember once Bono was talking about how when you've done a few albums and you make some money you gotta make sure that you're still concentrating on the music and not what kind of taps you're gonna put in your new kitchen. "He said something along those lines which I thought was very funny. "I think, if anything, U2 see themselves in us a little bit because I think they were obviously very dedicated to their music and they spent a long time touring and they spent a long time trying to break America as we did. "I wouldn't say there's a rivalry there but we know those guys and they're always very kind to us." X&Y certainly changed everything for the band. It also ended what the group saw as a three album series. Viva La Vida was made in the band's new permanent HQ, a former bakery tucked down an alley opposite a north London estate. Brian Eno, the long-time U2 producer and Markus Dravs, who was an engineer on Arcade Fire's Neon Bible were brought in as producers. While it still has the soaring melodies of classic Coldplay the band have stretched themselves musically. Guy revealed the band would swap instruments to find different directions and they'd play various instruments: African tablas on Yes, the Chinese string instrument, zither on Life In Technicolor or use samples and organ on Lost as well as creating string-laden Viva La Vida. Guy said: "The rule we had this time was "let's do things differently." The band also wanted to make a shorter album which has meant they've got another album's worth of songs He added: "I think one the first goals was to make a short record. The last record, X&Y, was a little bit too long. We have a lot of songs we didn't use. They're very good, they're not B-sides. We're still deciding what we're gonna do with those songs. I'd say there's another album ready to go." May 30, 200818 yr Doesn't really surprise me to be honest. There are too many songs that we know about that aren't on the album. Let's see: Poppy Fields Leftrightleftrightleft Rainy Day Famous Old Painters Glass Of Water Prospekt's March Postcards From Far Away Lukas The Goldrush Now My Feet Won't Touch The Ground Obviously some of them will be B-sides to VLVODAAHF singles, the rest could probably go on a another album. Not to mention, there are probably quite a few other songs that were recorded at the same time that we don't know about.

"we're still deciding what we're going to do with these songs." i was hoping for some huge, killer secret, but it's a start! :D let's hope it's a kid A/amnesiac type deal, but something better than amnesiac! AHHHHH....
