It'll be shown a lot now on TV so I'll have another look, but I don't think Nani was ever going to control it and he knew there was an on-rushing player, figured he'd get away with it if he looks at the ball (Which often happens).
March 5, 201313 yr Well seeing it again, Nani would have controlled it, but he did check forward as the balls in the air and then starts looking at the ball. It's contentious, but I think Sir Alex and the players are quick to overblow this as a ridiculous decision, it isn't.
March 5, 201313 yr I've just seen it again 3 times and if Arbeloa wasnt there Nani would have connected with the ball perfectly, probably brought it down and disappeared off with it. That said, Nani must have known there was a player ensuing, otherwise there would be no need to collect a ball in mid-air with a high boot. He put himself in danger of getting sent off with a European ref, no question.

March 6, 201313 yr It was clear that Ferguson had well and truly stumped Mourinho. That said the whole match was a rather turgid affair bar the controversy. Real's attempts at breaking United down were insipid until the Nani incident. I think it was a difficult decision for the ref. It could have gone yellow or red but in the end he made the right decision. Regardless of whether or not you know the opposition player is nearby you are giving the ref that opportunity by putting your feet up as high as that. The overreaction by Sir Alex was hilarious though as was some sections of the English media. Dortmund sweeping away Shakhtar tonight as well. A fabulous performance by them. Them or Bayern would be good bets at this stage.

I agree with what Mourinho and Ronaldo said after the game, they admitted they were outplayed and United had more chances in this game, but the interviewer kept asking if it was "harsh" on United and it certainly wasn't "harsh". ITV are even worse then Sky for British bias (Not just English clubs, but Celtic too, who were clearly outclassed by an away Juve side but you wouldn't know that listening to the whining of the panel for Celtics one chance on goal) and their reaction to the red card, both commentators and pundits in the studio, was ridiculous. Roy Keane at least kept it sane (Although I think he went a bit over the top, but probably trying to maintain some balance).

Look at the angle behind Arbeloa, it took the ref some time to make a decision, to me after the initial contact it looks violent. If Nani lets his leg go, it doesn't do half as much damage as further kicking into the player. Sheds new light on it, no? EDIT: And after posting this, Nani's knee does shoot towards his chest, which would cause his leg to shoot forward again. I don't even know anymore, but it's still definitely not a stupid decision, and nothing to do with a European referee, we see weaker red cards in the PL all the time.

Even after replay, at the time I hadn't even considered the possibility of a red. Personally I don't particularly care which team advanced, so I'm far from adamant about it (especially since it was nani) but I do find the call disagreeable. I bet he didn't do an interview, he only does that when he gets genuinely fouled and then can moan afterwards about how he's clearly not a diver. This is one of his worst (With a lot of competition).
