ALL FANS... LETS STEP BACK AND RE-ASSESS

Featured Replies

ill begin by saying that im a coldplay addict. i have every song theyve ever made on my ipod, its all i listen to. ive already bought tickets to 2 shows. so once again, i love coldplay. but with this new album, ive found myself listening to the cd over and over again - not because i love it - but because i want to love it. im subconciously trying to brainwash myself into thinking its a great cd, and up until just a few minutes ago, i had succeeded in doing so.

what ive realized is that if i need to put this much effort into liking something, it probably isnt too high quality. and the reason ive tried making myself like it is simply because of my love of the band, and what they have PREVIOUSLY DONE. just because it is coldplay, does not guarantee anything. what I, and im sure everyone else in this forum fell in love with, was the coldplay of old.

this situation kind of reminds me of playing youth sports, with that dad who always thought his kid was the best on the team no matter what he did. so lets stop being coldplay's "dad", and look at this album from an unbiased perspective.

This is not coldplay's best work, and it is not even worth mentioning in the same sentence as their first two albums, if not 3. god i miss their old sound......

Get over it. So they have developed their sound...you can't stay the same forever! Coldplay's 6 levels of awesome shine through as usual ;)

Well said, spot on and could not agree more NLGB1. Let's hope it's a grower but not sounding good...

Sorry mate dont agree with you at all when i first heard the album it did something to me that none of the othet albums did. On the past three albums which i love there were a few tracks that i would skip but none on viva la vida

This is not coldplay's best work, and it is not even worth mentioning in the same sentence as their first two albums, if not 3.

Finally! Someone else who has seen the light. The album will go on to sell millions as all their albums do blah blah blah but from a creative perspective they could have done better

You seem to have the unbelievably arrogant perspective that because you've just realised you don't like the album everyone else should instantly do the same.

The reason it has 32 COMPLETE listens on MY iTunes is not because I'm trying to like it. It's because I love it.

Y eah i bet you wanted them to make xay part 2 . This album is on another level to the other three so much more variation.

Just becase you just "want to love it and not loving it" dont say anyting about me or us.

I'm a fan too and I can say that X&Y was not the best... it was very good but not great, althogh, this one is - GREAT.

This is crazy.

The new album instantaniously blew my mind!

I'm in love with it!

No idea what you're talking about. Their other albums are certainly great, too, but that doesn't mean this one can't be great just because it's different. I liked every song on this album before finishing the first listen and like all Coldplay songs I expect most of them to get even better over time. I'm really good at finding stuff to unfairly hate in songs, but no songs on this album have anything like that (unlike their previous albums). Forced myself to listen to it? I couldn't force myself to stop.

In short: you don't have to like the album, but I think you're completely wrong. ;)

Well, for me, any album I listen to I usually have to play four or five times before I really understand and appreciate a song. It usually takes me that long to distinguish and know the names of those songs as well.

VLVODAAHF is a completely different story.

With one listen, I've immediately become memorized with its style and quality. Absolutely phenomenal.

Question!

While this album is all over the place with music styles, does anyone feel that because it flows so well together than its is just one entire song that must be listened to all the way through? It is very hard for me to rate each individual song as I think they all contribute equally to the album. Thought?

Yes you are right its like reading your favorite book once you start you dont want to stop.

I think coldplay and their albums are awesome.

My friend hates Coldplay, and is convinced that 50 Cent is "da awesomest guy eva"

who's right?

music is opinionated, and sadly not everyone will like VLVODAAOHF..

we must deal with it

See, you say you want the old sound back...but I see elements of all three other albums in Viva la Vida. It's still there, you just have to look for it. For example, I'm listening to Reign of Love right now (I think, track numbering confuses me) and to me, it sounds so Swallowed in the Sea like that I think people carping on about how 'it's not Coldplay' is utterly ludicrous. Of course they're not the same, if they wrote the same song 10 more times then they'd be branded rip-offs. Chillax, mate, give it a few more listens and you'll see that they're not Lost! (Hahaha Coldplay pun, I win at life).

Hi nlgb1,

I can't say I agree, as this new album blew me away instantaneously, whereas, for me, X & Y had to grow on me.

That said though, I understand the feeling as I've felt that way about other bands' work (I really really invested a lot of time and money in them (concerts, transatlantic flights to see them, every version of every country release CD in my collection, etc, etc, ) and NEEDED to love the albums, and I wasn't anymore  )

Why not just take a step back then? Buy the album and go to the shows (otherwise you'll regret it someday), but listen to other stuff/other bands that gives you that feeling of delight for the time being... Go back to the new album later, maybe even in a few weeks and you might feel differently about it. For me there's something about having the actual CD in my hands, where I can listen along with the lyrics and really appreciate all facets of the work.

maybe i'm in a minority, but I think Coldplay have got marginally better with each album.

"parachutes" sounds boring to me now, where as the last 2 sound like a whole new band, a better band.

I dont think you are in the minority at all i think each album gets better viva is the iceing on the cake just perfect

Honestly, this album didn't blow me away on first listen, but I think that's because I knew what to expect. I'd gobbled up every single leaked song and every tidbit of news and info about the album. I'd already heard half the album. But the second time I listened, I was captivated by it, and now I've been listening to it non-stop.

It was a different story with X&Y though. At that time, Coldplay was my favorite band, but I didn't really keep up with the news and stuff. I didn't know they were coming out with a new album until I heard "Speed of Sound" on the radio. Needless to say when I bought that album on the day it came out, I had no idea what to expect, and I was blown away from the very first second.

I digress, as I'm getting off the subject. VLV is their best album yet, in my opinion. And I truly do respect other opinions because in such an opinionated field as music, there's no such thing as right or wrong.

i don't think it's fair to assume that just because you don't like the album, that no one else should. everyone has a different taste and different expectations. VLV is absolutely my favorite album, before that it was Parachutes, then AROBTTH. i love X&Y too but not as much. it's just an opinion, no one is right or wrong.

i agree with you though, if you have to force yourself to listen to something until you convince yourself you like it, it isn't genuine (and honestly, isn't very fair to you or to Coldplay). but that didn't happen to everyone. i fell in love with the the first time i listened to it, and i love it more and more everytime i do. and i don't replay it because i want to try to love it more, i just want to listen to it because i don't get tired of it (yet, lol)

i'm going to be honest here....the first time I heard the album I was surprised, I didn#t like it THAT much and I really wanted to like it, and...I after a couple of lsitens, did, so yes, I know what you mean but now I think the album is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi

I"m also someone who loved the old Coldplay better than the X&Y performers.

But I don't want them to sound always the same. This album is really getting me excited, it's different and original. It don't think it will get me bored very soon.

I'm wondering though if these songs will be performed easily on stage.

Over the last couple of weeks it has been the only album I've listened to, over and over again. I agree though, it is no ARBTTH, but it is the first coldplay album I can listen to from start to finish, and not get bored, tired, or skip anything.

I can't say I agree in the slightest way because I love this album but i'm happy for you and your moment of enlightenment.

Just had my first listen and I think it's beautiful. A couple of times I had tears welling up in my eyes.

Our boys are back!

Sometimes I feel that I force myself to like Coldplay too, but really, why would I WANT to like a band that most of my friends dislike? And no album [Coldplay or not] has blown me away after the first listen. I don't know why I give Coldplay second chances :P but I'm glad I do. When I first pop in a CD I'm not actually focusing all of my energy on listening to it [i usually just skip to the singles], and I pick out songs that catch my attention in the first few seconds. After you listen to an album more than once you're able to dissect it and pick it apart and say 'ok, I like this song, I don't like this song.'

And I think the reason why I give Coldplay 'second chances' is because their singles [for the most part] are mind-blowing and I expect their whole album to be the same. And I am happy to say that this is true, at least for me. :nice:

But everyone's different.

I make no sense, I know. :P
