  • I can't give you the reasonings on why things changed, but I can give you an update from what I observed. The Oracle was run by Debs Wild. Debs is still with the band and helps out fans, for exam

Q. Hey Oracle, I just saw the new pictures from the Great Penny Howle and I knew that she took a bunch of pictures of the boys back in the X&Y days, but was surprised to see pictures of hers from Wembley. So I was wondering, is she or was she sort of like the bands official photographer? Is she good friends with the band. All her stuff is brilliant by the way. She's one of my favorites!

The Oracle replies:

Penny was the much loved and respected official tour photographer during the X&Y tour. They invited her back to take shots at Wembley as they do have a great rapport together. Penny has a knack to get intimate shots without being intrusive. Given the close proximity to the band while she works, it's amazing that you almost don't notice her being there. I agree it was great to see her work again.

Q. Hello Oracle!

I was wondering in that picture of the Coldplay puppets in Corfu, what book are they reading? They seemed to be really into it.

Thanks

The Oracle replies:

It was actually Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson.

I asked them how much Coldplay payed for In Rainbows. That question might've been more interesting two years ago.

Try looking up Radiohead in the tags... I have a feeling that one has been asked before... or I've read a Chris quote about it somewhere

I didn't know how many of your friends know about your "obsession" so i didn't want to be like "Hey the Oracle answered your question ohhh yeahhh!!!" and then having to explain who the oracle is and shit to the 'lay people' usually i don't care but i don't know i guess i was just extra tired when i erased it. Anyway wooohooo!!!! again :P

I thought Bono hated Chris

No, I don't think so...

They seemed to get along in the South Bank Show. Didn't they?

I was curious so I looked for the video, here it is:

Bono signing Fix You at the end of Beautiful Day

Q. I've just seen Shaun of the Dead, and I was hoping to find Chris and Jonny among the Z-people, but I didn't succeed. Could you tell me where they appear as zombies? (Sorry if I'm the 5426th one asking this question.)

The Oracle replies:

The part where Shaun is about to go inside the pub for safety with his friends there are zombies outside. Chris and Jonny are in that mob. You can spot them if you concentrate and maybe get handy with the freeze frame on your remote.

There's also a Zombie Aid clip that they're both in playing themselves.

:surprised:

I didn't know that! I thought they were just on the Zombaid bit.

Random bump but I KNEW I was right and they weren't in the actual film as zombies. Simon Pegg confirmed that they were not zombies in the film and only played themselves at the end.

(interview here from 2 hours in http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00nkb33 he also talks a little about Wembley)

I guess Miss Oracle got it wrong.

Q. Dear Oracle,

If I were to start a band called HotAct...would Coldplay sue me? Thanks.

The Oracle replies:

They wouldn't sue but since you're here asking... why on earth would you pick such a dreadful name to represent you for all eternity? No offence but I'd go back to the drawing board and try to come up with something better.

I don't think you'd be taken seriously using that name either. However, if your band is a Coldplay tribute act, HotAct would be passable.

Q. Oracle, I was reading the other day that to choose who was the singer for Coldplay Chris, Guy, Will and Jonny wrestled. They did this because they knew that the singer would get all of the publicity. Is this true? Thanks a lot.

The Oracle replies:

There's no truth in that whatsoever.

Q. Hey Oracle!

I was looking at the cassette tape for Ode to Deodorant, and it has Phil's number on it. Could I still contact him on it, or is he guilty of false advertising after all these years?

Thanks!

The Oracle replies:

The only thing Phil's guilty of is changing his phone number many years ago so, no, you wouldn't be able to contact him on the cassette's out of date info.

I think that's just wishful thinking on somepne's part! Some of the pervy types around here would get quite a thrill at the thought of them all wrestling :laugh3:

:laugh3: a wrestling match??!! Seriously, this personn hasn't thought about it!!! if it were the case, Chris would never have been the singer...Will would probably have beat him after 5 sec and be married to Gwyneth by now ! :laugh3:

Q. Hey! I'm playing a game where you have to quote Coldplay songs. What song has the sentence "have done for" in it? TY <3

The Oracle replies:

Don't Panic has the lyric "all of us are done for"; maybe that's what you're looking for.

Q. Who do I send my demo to?? I don't know who to pick??

The Oracle replies:

It's a crucial decision and you're wise to give it a lot of thought. Don't send it to a label who may already have an artist similar in style to you. That said; don't send to it to a specialist label if you do not fit into their genre.

If there's a company with many of your favourite artists on the roster that you think you would fit well with, give them a try but take the time to find out a contact name and they may return that time and effort by listening to it.

Don't just send it because you happen to have recorded an album's worth of songs. Only send it if you genuinely think it's ready and brilliant. If you're not totally happy with it, why would they be? This is a huge step so don't waste it. Bear in mind you may not hear back from anyone so after a couple of weeks, give them a call to see if they have received it and if/when you can expect it to be listened to.

Q. Hey-lo Oracle person,

If I cover a Coldplay song and it is slightly successful, would I have to pay royalties on said song? How would I go about that? Or does Coldplay not even care?

The Oracle replies:

Gosh, I admire your self-belief and confidence and maybe it's a good thing to consider such things but you may be a little ahead of yourself here Ben.

Anyone can do a straight cover of another's song; it's when you sample sections of a song it becomes a more complicated legal issue.

There are mechanical licenses available for such purposes too but I would strongly suggest you get legal representation (assuming you haven't got a manager/label etc.) if you intend to release a cover.

The fact that you did not write the song means that you would not get any money from the publishing income generated. Coldplay are signed to a publishing company who would collect those royalties.

There is a long process to go through before then though. For instance you'd have to record it, get some kind of release, receive some kind of promotion/radio play and then sell it and hope people buy it...
