What do you think about the running time of "Viva La Vida" tour concerts???

Featured Replies

i guess some people here are very Easy to Please. try seeing other bands in the same league (or above) as coldplay, without the confetti.

Why don't you get over yourself?

They're gonna play 90 minutes. They always have.

If you're not okay with that, then don't go.

If it's not worth your money, then don't spend your money.

I'm sure they'll be okay.

"I don't need a big stage, I don't need butterflies coming from above, I don't need a big screen at the background... I just want to see them live and listen to their music! I think this is the most important thing at a concert. They should rather minimize the things mentioned above and play some more songs, especially from Parachutes. People would be more content with the show then IMO."

I think you underestimate the number of people who do want "just the hits" lasers and Confetti. People who take the time to post here, are people who follow the band enough to take the time to do so. Coldplay's live audience these days is composed mostly of people who are casual fans, and those are who they are playing to now, for better or worse.

Regarding Pemberton, that may be the one legitimate instance on this tour when they played a short set, as they literally played that night until the safety authorities made them quit.

i think you all need to start focusing on ENJOYING THE MOMENT!!!!!!!!! i feel bad for you guys if you come out a concert like that and all you can feel is that you were ripped off

jeez

:dozey:

I do and have for example the red hot chilli peppers.. tickets were well over 50 euros, had to stand in the rain for hours... they had the worst crap of a junkie opener.... came out late... Played hardly any of their new songs and left after one hour... not even the slightest hint of an encore... and they have a bigger discography then coldplay.. i'd say I expected more from a band like that...

it's not about the confetti, or the fireworks or magic balls, it's about the way they treat their audience they could be out there for 5 minutes (okay well not really) but lets say an hour. if they play it with passion is all I need. what kinda fun is it anyway if chris would be on stage like: 'fuck i;m tired and I want to get to my bed.. but if I don't stay out here longer the fans will think we suck...' no us fans suck that we are on here whining about how it was too short! dammit think about all the people who couldn't get a friggin ticket at all! can't believe I'm even saying US fans when you and I are clearly not even in the same league!

i try not to judge a concert by its time, but rather the number of songs played and the quality of the performance - coldplay played 23 songs in philly (if you count the talk remix and the escapist) - that is a ton of music for one concert - i've been to a fair amount of dave matthews shows which tend to last much longer than 90 minutes, but they take a few minutes between each song - at the philly coldplay show, they had so much energy, were running everywhere, and started each song almost as soon as one had ended - so it's gonna be a quicker show because of all the energy, but well worth it IMO - i walked away completely satisfied

I think the fundimental point we have to agree on is this:

Good or Bad, Coldplay's live show is what it is. Nobody except the band has the ability to change one f^%king thing about the show. Either go or don't, but at thid point, there's plenty of information out there on which to base a decision of whether or not the show is worth it in your mind.

I understand expressing dissappointment in the show, but to many people here seem to demand change (which is beyond the power of anyone here to grant.), belittle the opinions of those who did enjoy the show, or post the same complaint on multiple threads several times (in some cases I have seen dozens of times and with the EXACT SAME text to boot.)

There is an issue on these boards with some fans who jump on anyone who has anything negative to say about the live show, but IMHO a lot of the people who post negative comments (not all, mind you), seem less interested in posting their opinion than they are in causing as much tension and ill will as possible among the general Coldplaying Community. Post your opinions in a civil and intellegent manner and respect the fact that others need not agree with you, and we'll all be better off.

Just my two cents...

coldplay played 23 songs in philly (if you count the talk remix and the escapist)

I might as well count the Coldplay songs I heard in the bar after the show then...if that's the case I saw 37 songs in Boston...

:laugh3:

lol! I have to agree with Maloo I don't think pre-recorded tracks played over the speakers while coldplay aren't even in the room should be counted as part of the show set list.

On a lighter note I want to point out that I in no way think their current show isn't worth the money. With all the flaws I can find, Coldplay are still one of the best bands alive right now, and in my opinion of all time. There is honestly for me only one other band on the planet I look forward to touring as much as Coldplay.

However that doesn't mean I'm never going to find fault with a single song or performance. I realize how tiring a show of that magnitude must be for them, but I also realize that a lot of bands older than they are go out and do longer shows, yes they have more material but again Coldplay have crossed the 4 album mark, and I think its at least time to begin beefing up the shows. Yes Chris runs around a lot, and I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it immensely. He draws the crowd in and looks like he's having a blast which in turn motivates an audience to feel the same. But that said he could sit (at the piano or stand with a guitar) through a couple more tracks and I would still be perfectly happy if that meant I got a few more songs in return.

Does that mean that myself and anyone else who thinks that should never attend a concert again on the off chance it wont be perfect ...No!! I'm a firm believer in the fact that I can go to a show objectively and walk away with notes on what I think worked and what didn't, and still have had a kick ass time.

I throughly enjoy debating these and other points good and bad on this board. I think as long as everyone is respectful its fun and enlightening to hear other peoples opinions, and I for one wouldn't want to be a part of a board where it was all praise all the time,....Though coldplay might come as close to deserving all praise as any band I've ever had the privilege of listening to.

Just my two cents...

Agreed.

It's not just this board though, it happens all over the place, so it just shows how common it is :p

. On the other hand they are playing several shows and don't want to make themselves too tired.

Oh,i feel sorry for these poor millionaires

lColdplay are still one of the best bands alive right now, and in my opinion of all time.

You can't be serious.FOR REAL

I realize how tiring a show of that magnitude must be for them.

You haven't seen many concerts i guess.....except coldplay

I agree it's a bit foolish to make repeated excuses for the flaws in the show. If the show is flawed, it's flawed, regardless of whether the band is "tired" or not, or whether they played recorded songs before or after their performance

That said, I still think Coldplay is relatively young, and are still adjusting to their status as big arena headllining band. I've said it in a previous post, but it seems to me they are taking baby steps this tour toward being a better live act. Though there sets are still short and roughly the same from night to night, they are playing more songs than they ever have before, and are changing the setlist up more than on previous tours. Judged against themselves, IMHO Coldplay are improving, but they do still have a long way to go.

When changing 1 song a night is "more than ever before" thats extremely sad

I agree, there's no point bitching and moaning, or making excuses.

Not satisfied, then that's unfortunate, but it's not the end of the world. Learn from your mistakes and don't go again.

Arguing about it isn't gonna change a thing.

"When changing 1 song a night is "more than ever before" thats extremely sad"

Well, it may be sad, but it is true. And despite what some on here think, it's more than a lot of bands. I stand by my statement, Coldplay need a great deal of improvement to become a truly great live act, they are improving slightly.

The thing is at this point, most of the complaints with Coldplay's live show are nothing new. If you go see them perform expecting them to do something past evidence clearly shows they're not going to do, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I get that some of you think the show sucks. What I don't get is why you refuse to accept other people do like the show, or why people feel the need to cut and paste the EXACT SAME negative comments dozens of times and flood every thread with the same message.

At this point, IMHO it's pretty clear what a Coldplay show is going to be like, and has been for years, that's either acceptable to you or it's not, but it's not going to change. If you think other bands are better live, save your money and go see their shows instead.

I agree, there's no point bitching and moaning, or making excuses.

I disagree. I do not like criticism for criticism sake, but constructive criticism helps the band. By your logic, if coldplay live was terrible we should say nothing and not go ever again. So ultimately everyone stops going and there is no more coldplay.

My critique is coldplay are still pretty darn good live. But I do have some concerns about the overall concert experience. After every gig coldplay themselves sit down and critique their performances. I also hope they read their messageboards and get audience feedback-well I know they do because they listened to the main criticism of the last tour, namely ticket prices. So to say we can't make a difference is just not so.

Isn't the whole appreciation of art based on an individuals critical assessment? We look at something and decide whether it appeals to us or not. I don't expect coldplay to please every single fan, but I sure hope they want to please as many fans/concert goers as possible. The current coldplay tour does many more things right than it does wrong. The only on-going concerns are ticket prices, set-lists, set-length and a few production niggles. If I was coldplay, I would be interested in hearing opinions. In truth people/consumers are very demanding nowadays-I don't know whether that is a bad thing when it encroaches into artistic expression but there you go. But we look at the poll results so far, over 75% of people who responded were not satisfied with the set list. If I was managing the coldplay 'live' brand that would concern me-put it another way if you had a restaurant where 75% of your consumers were not satisfied with your portions you would have problems.

When i saw the Foo Fighters back in febuary they played for 2 hours, it went by so fast and it was one of the longest shows ive ever seen. Coldplay playing for 90 miniutes is kinda standard for them isnt it, if i recall correctly the twisted logic tour sets ran for about 90 min. However short it was, it was an amazing show, i just wish the played more of the oldies. (coldplay that is) :-)

"I disagree. I do not like criticism for criticism sake, but constructive criticism helps the band. By your logic, if coldplay live was terrible we should say nothing and not go ever again. So ultimately everyone stops going and there is no more coldplay."

I agree that constructive critisism helps the band. If I was in a position to offer such critisism to the band, or someone related to their organization, I would, the problem is, I'm not.

I based my statement on three factors:

1. That the majority of the complaints against Coldpay's live show are not new, and have been around at least since the begginning of the Twisted Logic tour. This to me implies they are not temporary issues, but rather longterm ongoing ones.

2. I highly doubt complaints posted on an online message board will even reach the band, let alone seriously influence the band's decision making process.

3. It seems to me that their are a fairly large amount of fans who do seem satisfied with the show as is, which makes it even less likely the band will feel the need to change.

Anyway, I wasn't talking about your posts per se. You and a few others seem legitimately interested in posting your opinions, and also seem interested in what others have to say. There are, however, many others, most of whom I doubt ever were Coldplay fans, who seem to have come to the site lately, post the same negative messages multiple times, and berate anybody who does enjoy the band or their shows. You are not one of the people to whom the critisism in my post was directed.

On a final note, while I agree with you somewhat about the poll results (and my personal vote was in one of the "unsatisfied" catagories BTW) I think this thread by it's nature attracts and appeals to those who are looking for a "safe" thread to post a negative opinion (one where they will be less likely to be jumped on for daring to utter critisism.) In addition, the people who are devoted enough to the band to even bother posting here (and again I include myself in this catagory), are probably more demanding and harder to please than a lot of the more casual fans who make up a good portion of Coldplay's live audience these days. Anyway, the way the poll is worded, I don't see why anyone would select the "satisfied" option. No matter how long the band played, it's only logical the audience wouldn't mind more songs...

I don't think all the people suggesting "stay home" want to "shut up" complainers however, rather I think experience tells them that declining sales/attendence is the only feedback a lot of bands seem to respond to at all. (I know when I posted thoughts to the "stay home" effect, I was thinking entirely from this angle .)

It would be cool if someone in the band's organization read things such as this board in order to relay fan opinion to the band, but as much as I want to believe that, I do doubt it....

you really ought to stop analyzing others' posts piece by piece, as if it's some sort of SAT question. some people are let down by the length of the show and the breadth of the songs, which takes away the fun of multiple concert attendance. that is really all we want to say. coldplay is one of the biggest if not the biggest band right now, not some young inexperienced band experiencing massive attention all of a sudden. like what jonny said in one interview, they've been around for more than 10 years, although age wise they are still considered 'young'. if you've been to concerts by bands as acclaimed as coldplay, you'd know where the complaints are coming from. some people are so blinded by their love for the band that they try to make the lamest excuses i.e. "they are tired", "they are young band". don't get so defensive, this is just an online forum where fans express their opinions. it's a bit silly of you to think people who express disappointments are doing so in the hopes of getting their voices heard to the band. it's called a discussion, so relax buddy.

My SAT worthy analysis of that post::P

"you really ought to stop analyzing others' posts piece by piece, as if it's some sort of SAT question. some people are let down by the length of the show and the breadth of the songs, which takes away the fun of multiple concert "

I totally get all that, however, discussion, debate, and responding to others opinions are what these boards exist for. If you don't want to hear what others have to say, why are you here?

"coldplay is one of the biggest if not the biggest band right now, not some young inexperienced band experiencing massive attention all of a sudden. like what jonny said in one interview, they've been around for more than 10 years, although age wise they are still considered 'young'. if you've been to concerts by bands as acclaimed as coldplay, you'd know where the complaints are coming from"

Yes, because Coldplay would be the ONLY band in history who's popularity exceeded their ability, and who had a degree of trouble living up to said popularity, right?

I've been to dozens of live concerts (from small club bands to veteran stadium headliners.), and yes a lot of bands are better than Coldplay live, but, a lot of bands, even "acclaimed" ones are worse, in some cases much worse.

"some people are so blinded by their love for the band that they try to make the lamest excuses i.e. "they are tired", "they are young band". don't get so defensive, this is just an online forum where fans express their opinions"

Yes, and if you actually READ the post of mine you critisized, you'd see I in no way support making excuses for flaws in the band's shows, or defending the band against even justified critisism. As long as you remain civil while expressing your opinion, and respect other's opinions which differ from your own, I personally have no problem with you (or anyone else) posting a critical review.

"it's a bit silly of you to think people who express disappointments are doing so in the hopes of getting their voices heard to the band"

Considering that multiple people have stated that this was their intention in posting critisism, I don't think it's silly at all. Unless of course, we're talking about the likelyhood such a tactic will actually work, which IMHO IS "a bit silly"...

"it's called a discussion, so relax buddy"

Which, again, is why I'm "discussing" what others have said. That's what a discussion is, if nobody responds to anybody else, that's not a discussion. My previous long post was part of an ongoing discussion with another poster. I posted my thoughts, they posted a response to that post, and I was attempting to respond to points they raised. That's what people do here.

Hope this is good enough to get me into Yale...:laugh3:

i think it was a good time. it was the best night of my life.

but they could sing a few more songs. well, if it was up to me i'd have them stay up there forever..

and ever... and ever... :D

can't we just let this thread move onto page two clearly nobody's going to agree with eachother...

I disagree. I do not like criticism for criticism sake, but constructive criticism helps the band. By your logic, if coldplay live was terrible we should say nothing and not go ever again. So ultimately everyone stops going and there is no more coldplay.

Arguing about it here isn't telling the band anything ;)

I'm sorry but I really don't think they sit down at a meeting and pull up Coldplaying.com :P

"can't we just let this thread move onto page two clearly nobody's going to agree with eachother..."

Well, it's pretty clear we're not going to agree, but IMHO some interesting points have been raised, which does kind of make the thread interesting. (to me anyway...)
