Nor did I say Coldplay changed their sound on a major label. (althogh its likely as its such a common thing). I have not listened to 'old Coldplay' enough to know that.

The true fact of the matter is that Satriani is not massive because he plays guitar. If he had a vocalist he would sell way more albums. Thats fact.

For the last time, No one in Coldplay ripped off Satch, but if he did, I'd find what he did with the song to be pretty cool/unique.

And reiterate til your fingers cramp but Coldplay has illustrated time and time again the ability to reinvent themselves and experiment with many different styles and sounds, even in the course of a single album, much less their career.

And look, I'm not trying to discredit Satriani, Even though I dislike a lot of the stuff he's done and said over the course of this controversy I definitely respect him as a very talented guitarist.

 

And so what if Coldplay doesn't get the respect they deserve? I have enormous respect for Radiohead, but I'll be damned if most of the guys I've encountered at atease aren't complete !@#$'s...

If you went through Coldplay's catalogue from their Safety E.P. to their latest E.P., you'd see their music spans many styles, genre's and is constantly changing. Much like U2, and yes, the Beatles in many respects. The fact you dismiss all their songs as "sounding the same" proves to me you have no authority to speak on the matter. I'd even go so far as to suggest they're far more varietous and original in their musical resume' than Satch, but we'll have to agree to disagree...

 

Personally I'd trade all the shredding in the world for some tangible, beautiful music. (and of course, music is often both)

The thing people need to realize is that every artist under the sun has ripped off another artist. Either intentionally or unintentionally. George Harrison did it, Elvis Presley did it, even King Crimson ripped off Yes (and I have lots of respect for both bands.) The Mars Volta ripped off King Crimson as well, and I love The Mars Volta.

 

Whether Coldplay 'borrowed' something for one of their songs is inconsequential to me. I honestly don't give a crap. Viva La Vida is a great song, and if Coldplay were inspired by a riff from an artist I haven't even heard of, that's fine with me.

 

Bono himself even said it, "Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief." Music inspires other music.
