Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

Featured Replies

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a bit of news too.

ANd just to add my 2 cents, they do sound similar, but something tells me that C & J weren't listening to much 80s metal during their formative years, so it's just a sad coincidence.

Joe Satriani vs Coldplay

Joe Satriani is probably amongst one of the most immature 50 year olds in the world at the moment. His actions since he sued Coldplay have been pathetic. His comments like 'it broke my heart when I found out.... I took 13 years to write this tune (If I Could Fly)... it was for my wife.' Ohhhhh. My heart bleeds for you Joe....not! If that's what he wrote in 13 years then that's 13 years wasted. His song sounds nothing like Viva La Vida bar 3. Sad old man. Plus his guitar playing makes no sense. All lick and nothing else.

this is late sorry but i would just like to say to satchfan:

if we're all "fanboys" for defending coldplay, wouldn't that make you a "fanboy" yourself for defending satriani??

ahh well. this is ridiculous. i find no need to sue somebody for similarities between their song and yours. people like your song, and people like theirs. no need to blow everything out of proportion. this one ashlee simpson song (i think its called eyes wide open or something) sounds a lot like square one the entire way through. nothing came of that. why sue over 5 seconds?

this is all going to get settled sooner or later so all we can do is wait. i would be very upset if coldplay lost the lawsuit but i am extremely confident that they would bounce right back. i mean come on, there are thousands of us on coldplaying! and thats not even the entire fanbase. im not worried at all.

^^Agreed. If someone joins a forum of one of their least favorite bands JUST to spam on it, they've got to be more fanboyish than most people on that forum.

Just sayin'.

^ Can you have my children

what?

Ughhhh...

Not sure if any of you remember me, but I used to visit here often back in the day. I stopped being such a crazy Coldplay fan for a few years so I didn't see the need to come here any more. But I've began to listen to them again once Viva La Vida came out (which was alright, too poppy for my tastes though). Three or so years out of the loop and now I hear Satch is suing Coldplay for plagiarism? What the hell is going on???

Coming from an unbiased musician, I've heard both songs and I respect both artists. Chris and Joe's melody sound almost the same. And yeah, music theory-ily speaking, both songs are very similar. But whether or not Chris copied off of Satch or not is beyond me! Its not our place to judge I guess. Could be coincidence, could be plagiarism. We'll probably never know for sure!

Thank you. I read lots of news articles about it coming from both sides. They all basically said the same thing. I was hoping you guys would know more information, guess you're just as in the dark about the whole thing as everyone else :(.

Yeah, we've only got opinions. Obviously they're favoured more towards Coldplay here.

We're just waiting until it progresses really.

I'm sorry, but who the hell even LISTENS to Joe Satriani these days.

It's just a coincidence they sound similar. There's only a few chords you can play, etc etc.

Even the Doors were once sued for plaigiarism by The Kinks in 1968 because they thought "Hello I Love You" sounded like "All Day & All of the Night."

People still listen to the Doors and a lot of teens born after Jim's death wear his face on their t-shirts to this day.

of course, I sent you an email

good night :)

Coldplay already borrowed a sample for the song Talk and also Life In Technicolor: on both occasions they gave credit where credit was due to the people responsible for those melodies. Why would they do differently with Viva La Vida? This just totally proves that they could not have stolen the melody. The way I see it , it´s as simple as that.

hey everyone.

for english i have to do a PERSUASIVE speech on a current issue. being a die hard coldplay fan im gonna do my speech on this Joe Satriani vs Coldplay case.

i need evidence or persuasive reasons as to why Coldplay DIDN'T copy Joe. so if any1 has any persuasive articles or points, please do share coz i dont have much to talk about it for 5 mins.

thanks

Where the fuck have you been hiding? If you told me this 6 months ago I may have cared.

Hey, I've been traveling. I dunno, Coldplay are pretty cowardly when they just ignored him till he was going to embarrass them at the Grammys. I mean, if it was just some tiny band but Satriani is a legendary artist.

And its not like its a stretch... its a blatent copy.

Its just weak. Boo Chris Martin! Boo!

get informed Satriani just copied Enanitos Verdes song.

there have been a lot of bands that have copied coldplay slightly (specially Clocks) and Coldplay hadn't menaced them to take them to the trial for plagiarism when could have done that.

I dunno about that. In one case they're playing the same scale and it sounds similar but the feel and melody are different. In the other the whole melody is exactly the same over the exact same rhythm.
